Catching Up With You All

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to tell you all that we had the first cast party of the year at the theatre a few weeks ago. I made a Banana Butter Cake, which was a huge hit. Got a workday this weekend (didn't go last week because my best friend had off work and wanted to come over for the day: ) ). I'll be making my Mandarin Orange Cake and a batch of lemonade (orange lemonade to be exact) for this round.

The garden's been keeping me busy as well. Just went to a local nursery today (finally bought our tomato plants-one regular, one cherry and I bought a pickling cucumber plant at Ace Hardware the other week). We also got some flowers. I got three mini-rosebushes for my one flowerbed. I also found something I needed for my Halloween costume this year (I think you all will LOVE it this year).

Missed your posts, Brad. You have been very busy. Your Banana Butter Cake sounds good and I know your Mandarin Orange Cake is yummy because I made one after seeing your post on making it.

Sounds like you're going to have a nice garden this year. Treats for both the table and the eyes.

Now, are you going to make us wait for Halloween to know what your costume will be this year?

Hi Madonna,

I'm so glad that the Mandarin Orange Cake turned out to be a success for you! I really enjoy the icing for it, and it hits the spot every time.

I hope the gardening season is successful and we don't have a dry summer like we did last year. It's rained overnight for the past two nights, thankfully. I have a rain chain hanging from the gutter, and they're so much prettier than a downspout.

As for my costume, I will be keeping it a surprise. There's more work going into this one than what I did for Cruella, as a friend said she was going to help me. It's another female character, not exactly Disney, but similar.

Speaking of which, I'm hoping to go see Maleficent when it's released.

Heres what you missed "FRUITA ORCHARDS PHOTOVisitors of Capitol Reef are often curious about the orchards that lie within a mile or two of the Visitor Center. These trees are the most obvious remnant of the pioneer community of Fruita, which was settled in 1880. Usually no more than 10 families lived in Fruita at any one time, and the last resident moved away in 1969. Early settlers planted the orchards to insure subsistence. Today, the orchards are preserved and protected as a Rural Historic Landscape. The orchards hold approximately 2,700 trees and are composed of cherry, apricot, peach, pear, and apple, as well as, a few plum, mulberry, almond, and walnut trees. The National Park Service now owns and maintains the orchards with a 2-person orchard crew that is kept busy year round with pruning, irrigation, and orchard management. You are welcome to stroll in any unlocked orchard and you may consume as much ripe fruit as you want while in the orchards. Fruit may not be picked in quantity until the designated harvest begins. Orchards that are open for picking are signed as such. A fee is charged for all fruit picked and removed from the orchards. Signs listing fruit prices, scales, plastic bags, and a self-pay station are located near the entrance of open orchards. Please select only ripe fruit and leave the rest to ripen for other visitors. Thanks all! Yes SISTER LUCIENNE is a Shooter intro, and I really like it. We have had record temps (tripple digits in the Seattle area is almost unheard of, and we have had them for two weeks!) and this DL has held it's beautiful color dawn to dusk. Granted, it is in part shade, but I have learned for the first time this year to appreciated something that is still vibrant when I get home from work! Debra, if your's is redder, I would be thinking that it may not be the right plant, as mine has been one of the more consistant in color of any in my garden. As for PAW PRINT, I only added it last fall, but from what I have seen so far, if you are thinking about it, GET IT! It's first blooms started before our outrageous temps, but it has still been lovely at the end of the day when it has been very hot, and it is totally packed with blooms. I was terribly afraid that I would not get the watermark in my "cool...ha ha ha" world, but every bloom has been wonderful. I am doing a budcount analysis this year for all of my dl's (Thanks Rita, for the inspiration to really SEE what my plants are doing), and I would bet that even as a first year plant it is in my top 20%. The pic of WOW was taken early in the am, so the color by evening was much more washed out...it is not a real good "color holder" when the heat is on I am thinking....

Ok thank you for your suggestions!! I really appreciate it. I didn't think about this before, but should I pick them according to their height too? Say if I have 3-4 lined up like Bill's front yard... I would like to pick the ones that have similar height. Or is that a moot point since I can always prune them to the desired height? I'm liking the idea of lining them up to separate the property line on the right side... then put the rocks like Bill did. That's very pretty. But then what do I do w/ the rest of the space next to it? Can I plant other flowers like roses, hydrangeas or something? I really don't want to add grass in that small space. I'll try to upload a diagram so you can see it. Any suggestions for some companion flowering plants near my plumies? Thanks!

You know that fall is coming when you're already starting to plan for next years yard. I dont know if Im the only one who has already done this, but Im starting to already see what Im planting in the yard for next year and where everything is going to go. But most of my plants are growing better than ever so they havent taken a hit from the shorter days. Cooler weather is on the way here too (Not every day is in the 90s anymore) but fortunately no daytime temps out of the 80s and no night time temps out of the 70s. Summer is really almost over and its sad since it went by so quickly. Fall and winter are my least favorite seasons and my plants arent so crazy about it either! Good luck! -Alex

You are doing so great. You are taking on the most difficult kind of cooking, ie. baking.

With most kinds of cooking, you always have a chance to correct your mistakes; but not with baking.

Thank you everyone!

Sorry to have disappeared again, but the gardening is really picking up and the second show of the year opens the week after next (plus, my laptop won't load GW, but the desktop and mum's tablet will.)

This past weekend I made brown sugar drops (they're cookies, for those of you who don't know what they are) and a Kool Aid punch that has proven to be a hit as well. (I modified the recipe a little, adjusting the amount of sugar).

Brad, it sounds like you've been busy. I"ve been gardening too, enough that I sunburned the backs of my legs, but we haven't had any rain here in nearly two weeks, so we need some now. Maybe tomorrow.

I hope you put some Aloe vera on that sunburn! We need some rain too, but we have had some more recently than you have. We just put in two new rosebushes on Friday (I got a yellow climber for my new arbor, called Golden Showers). *sigh* So many plants, so little space. I guess when you're passionate about any hobby, space does become an issue lol.

Brad, my grandmother grew roses and had one called Golden Slippers, it was orange and very different.

Yes, I know about space. I just put in a half acre vegetable garden, and still didn't have enough space for all the heirloom tomato varieties I wanted to try. And I have 60 acres, and not enough garden room, LOL.
