Gift-giving situation

A close friend's daughter is expecting a baby in April. I was thinking of giving a framed photograph as a baby gift, possibly an oil-on-water abstract I could do in the nursery colors. I've done this before, successfully. My friend thought that was a great idea, but told me the nursery colors are grey and black.

She said if I wanted to do something in color I should go ahead, but another idea is to print one of my flower/insect pictures in black & white and give that. I have two problems with that. One is that although I love b&w photography I generally don't like b&w flowers. The bigger issue is that I want to give this baby some color. A grey and black room sounds like something you'd find in a Manhattan apartment--one without kids.

However, I realize it's not my place to impose color on the mother's plan. I haven't yet decided which way I'm going to go on this--color picture, b&w picture, or something else entirely.

Have you ever encountered something like this?
