I've gotten TWO surprises...

I'm woefully remiss in posting this, so it's time to catch up with my thank yous.

A couple of weeks ago I got a package in the mail, insured. I even had to sign for it at the post office. I couldn't remember ordering anything, so I went to pick it up. The return address contained the name of a person that I'd never heard of and a city in Georgia that I'd also never heard of. Maybe Elery ordered something?

When I opened the package I found a lovely note from Renee (beanthere_dunthat). Renee and I have been friends for a long time, though a couple of forums and a couple of moves and more than a couple of states, LOL.

In addition to the note, I found this:

Isn't it gorgeous? On the day I picked it up I was wearing a rusty colored jacket and skirt in autumn colors, this matched perfectly. Thank you, Renee, for thinking of me. I love it and so far I've been able to keep Ashley from swiping it. So far.

Then, earlier this week, I came home from work about 10 p.m. after a long, long day to find another package in my mail. This one, though, was from Jim (Jimster). He had been reading my posts about my newfound passion for sushi and saw that I had been rolling the sushi with plastic wrap because I hadn't been able to find a sushi mat. (Hey, it worked, LOL) Of course, he promptly bought one and sent it to me, along with a package of "instant" dashi no moto. Now, I've never had dashi no moto, that I'm aware of, so I'll have lots of fun with this!

Thank you, Jim, for thinking of me. Ashley also thanks you, she thinks you've just provided her with hours of entertainment, watching me try to learn to use a sushi mat. I'll fool her, I'll make her roll her own, so there.

So, thank you Renee and thank you Jim, for thinking of me and for brightening my day. You don't know how much I appreciate it.

That bracelet is beautiful! Did you make it, Renee? Love the color of those stones!

How thoughtful of Jim to make your sushi-making more adventuresome!

(I used to "roll my own", wonder if the technique would apply to sushi? LOL)

Jim, How nice of you to see to it that Annie rolls her sushi the correct way. Plus we hopefully will get pictures of that event...

Annie, you are a special lady receiving gifts from special friends. How many days away till the nuptials? 1 or 2 days?

Oleg, From time to time I get summer blooms on a few bulbs, a couple have been repeat summer bloomers and last year I had 5 of which 4 re-bloomed for me during the winter. My Estrella and Exposure do it regularly and always bloom in the winter too. I'm just guessing but, from my limited experience with summer blooms I think it's either the bulb as a propensity for this or it's just happenstance. All my bulbs have the same culture so I can't really attribute it to anything in particular. I will say that the past few years that I didn't force dormancy and let their leaves continue to grow. This worked fine for many of my bulbs but, a good number didn't bloom at all last year so this year I'm going to force dormancy on more than half of my bulbs which are planted either directly in the ground or in whiskey barrels for the summer. These are the ones that I will give a cold dormancy to and see what happens. The others that are still in their pots can keep their leaves if they choose and maybe I'll be able to see a big difference in their blooming this coming winter. I hope when your Jewel blooms for you this summer that it does rebloom for you next winter..My Jewel is planted in a barrel for the summer but last year it kept it leaves all winter and bloomed anyway with no dormancy.. Sorry I couldn't be more help, but in my case I really don't think it has anything to do with regional climate. Maybe someone else has some better ideas... Donna

Very cool, MissSherry! Isn't Agalinis the plant that is parasitic with various grasses/weeds? I need to get some seed and scatter. I found a Buckeye on my Diascia (same family as Snaps; scrophulariaceae, I believe) this year. I just bought it as a groundcover and was totally surprised. My Lobelia cardinalis is just now starting to bloom and has grown exponentially since Sandy gave me a small plant 2 years ago. Apparently it does reseed or spread by suckers/runners (I'd have to look it up). I just adore the brilliance of the flowers. Is the Carolina laurel cherry in the prunus or lauraceae family? Susan

Nat, I don't know the zones for the butterfly bushes, but maybe that's our compensation down here, for lilacs usually don't make it here in the heat. Unfortunately, as pretty as I think the flowers on b.bushes are, they don't have the lilac fragrance, which is one of my favorites. Avedon

Those pickles look fabulous. Maybe it was because my mom had a hard time with them, but pickles have always seemed out of my league. Would Sharon's dills be too difficult for a novice canner/pickler? Hey Deanna, I'll trade you one of my remaining 3 or 4 pints of Annie's salsa for some goodies from your garden later this season! Or maybe some of your pepper jelly? :) I'm thinking this is the year for me to start canning a lot more. I'm sure I'll be asking a ton of questions of all the experts around here... TIA Bri

What fun to receive such nice gifts. That's a beautiful bracelet. It will be fun to hear about your adventures with the sushi mat. I'm sure that Ashley will pick it up quickly, too.

Hmmm....I think it looks like a necklace.....and that it looks like coffee beans....well just a little!
Don't know nuffin bout rollin no sushi....I'll leave that to the people at the sushi house!

I wonder what kind of beads they are? Very pretty, and very, very thoughtful.

I can't stand sushi, but I watch the guys roll it up on the little mats. What a nice gift for you.

They are both lovely! How sweet! The bracelet is pretty.

My neighbor and I have just started enjoying sushi together (though it's cooked stuff, not Sashimi)... he wants to get a bamboo mat. Please report back after you use it! I may end up gifting him with one for his birthday in a couple weeks so I can reap the benefits of free California rolls!

Enjoy your gifts! You work hard and you bring a lot to this forum... I can't think of a better recipient!

Two great surprises - one for cooking and one for wearing. That bracelet will be ideal with Annie's red hair. And what more perfect for two people who love to cook than the sushi mat.

RR, the wedding is tomorrow. I'll play with the sushi mat when I get home. Hey, maybe I'll take pictures of ASHLEY rolling.....whatever. She hates sushi, LOL.

Annie, I'm glad you like it. Tell Ashley she can have her own maybe when she gets married. LOL!

To answer the questions -- heavens, no, I didn't make it. LOL! I'm not that talented. :)

The beads are lampwork glass. Both beads and assembly were made by Four Tails Lampwork. It's a "one woman, three cats and a corgi" (thus the four tails) company in Georgia. I've admired her beads often, and now that she's making jewelry (instead of just the beads by themselves), it's harder than ever to resist!

Cool gift from Jim, you should have fun making sushi with that! Tell Ashley she can make sushi with rice krispies treats and fruit rollups, I make em all summer with the kids, they love them!

Well, the sushi mat certainly wasn't a big gift, by comparison to the beautiful lamp work beads it was a mere nothing. I'm glad she liked it.

Actually, it was an act of sabotage, the straw that broke the camel's back. Now her kitchen drawer won't close.
