Hi All: I received the following quotes/options for a 3 ton (downstairs) and 4 ton (upstairs) two level house in Atlanta, GA. I like the company who quoted me but I am wondering about Bryant and which option is best and, honestly I find it a bit confusing. TIA for any insight.

I would want to see all mdl numbers for each system-furnace/air handler, evap coil, condensers, thermostats and any auxiliary equipment.

Bryant is the sister company to Carrier and model to model, the equipment is the same except for cosmetics.

What size HVAC are you replacing and are you experiencing any problems?

Post back and I will be glad to offer some comments and suggestions.

Just about all manufacturers have a Good, Better, Best line. The Good usually 13-14 SEER, the Better 15-16 SEER, and Best being 17-20 SEER.

It looks like the company quoted you the two higher lines for Bryant. Was this your preference based on information you gave to the sales person or did they determine what was best for you?

I would definitely recommend the variable speed, two-stage furnace.

To truly improve your comfort level and give you control over different parts of your house...PUT IN A ZONE CONTROL SYSTEM! When we were looking, I learned that many companies just want to sell you a "box", but not really do anything about your comfort through your air distribution.

The middle range equipment (including variable speed, two-stage furnace) along with a Zone Control System will give you the ultimate in control & efficiency.

ProTech Heating & Air put in our Zone System and really educated us on the importance of the air distribution and the equipment. Couldn't be happier that I can now keep Master bedroom at a temp different than my kids' rooms.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I'll try and answer most of your questions. I live in Atlanta, GA. My home is 2 stories, but one-half of the home is a large living area with high vaulted ceilings (starting at 12 ft, peaking around 20-22 ft). The main living area has a good bit of windows and faces West, so it gets blasted by the afternoon sun. I currently have a Westinghouse 3 ton 10 seer zoned unit. My home is new, built in 2005, I moved in May 2006. For the Spring and Fall months we stay pretty comfortable, but during the Summer and Winter my system cannot keep up. As long as 1 zone is calling at a time, things go ok. But when it gets really hot and both zones require cooling, the temperatures start rising quickly. I called in the installing HVAC company within the warranty period (12 months), but they would not help me. I brought in 4 other companies to run load calculations and they all came to the same conclusion that my home requires 4.5 to 5 tons. I also have issues with a lack of returns and the number and placement of my vents. For example, the hottest area in my house is only cooled by two tiny vents that make very long runs right against the roof deck. By the time what little air comes out, its basically room temperature. The other HVAC techs directed me to the Secretary of State, so I filed a complaint. The Sec of State found in my favor and now I'm dealing with the HVAC company's lawyer to see how they are going to fix the system. Since they admittedly installed my original system without doing a load calculation, I'm concerned they will only want to scam me again. The Sec of State had the original HVAC company come out to run a Manual J on my home and their calculations agreed that my home would need a 5 ton unit. Obviously, based on my home's layout, the best solution would be a 3 ton for the main floor and a 1.5 to 2 ton for upstairs. Unfortunately, that would be very expensive for me to do and since the installing company is being made to fix the system for free, they want to upgrade the existing setup (1 system, zoned) without the additional expense of running new duct work in my basement for the main floor. My main concern having these guys back in my home is that they will not properly upgrade the duct work so that the required CFMs are reaching each room. I was considering bringing out a 3rd party to run a duct test once they finish their work. - On top of upgrading the compressor, other items that would need to be upgraded would be the: lineset, furnace, air handler/blower and duct work? I really appreciate any help. This has been a long process and my current system has been so overloaded that its is about to give out. Last night the system froze up so badly that there was a 3 inch wide line of condensation on my bathroom mirror where the lineset runs up the wall.

I barely hear my ahu running. it is located in a closet with return in living room. very very quiet. while my heat pump is single stage my ahu is variable speed. great dehumidification, even here with high humidity the norm. there are ways to quiten areas where ahu and return's are located. I see on your plans you have a mechanical room is this not where equipment would be located? when you talk about ducts in crawlspace.. you mean basement? or under house between ground and house? not being in an area where we have basements I can't commnent on ductwork installs in that location. I do read that basement ductwork is seldom mastic sealed or insulated. personally I'd have a problem with that. if I'm paying to condition air...I want control over amount delivered and temp of delivered air. unsealed ducts leak. uninsulated ducts lose degrees of heat/cool. when you talk about minisplits..keep in mind that you need someone who is familiar with the install. ionized if you recall, even your very knowledgable hvac contractor had input from someone with more hands on install of mini splits. aside from minsplits with multiple ahu's that hang on the wall..there are also casette ahu's that are installed in the ceiling. OP have you thought about an energy rating? someone you hire to give you specific to you information? in my area for new construction the value of the energy saved can be added to appraised cost of home. the rating takes house from just meeting code to including the upgrades and gives you a home energy rating score. HERS rating. just fyi. I've never had a new construction home plan on minisplits. that is usually a retrofit option. around here there are maybe 10 of 50 companies that have experience in minisplits. and of the 10..only 5 do it well and attend classes as they become available. research the companies well if you go mini split route. I'd limit upgrading efficiency to 18 SEER actually I find that ROI is better for 15-17 SEER. above that the cost for more efficiency takes longer to re-coup, for little benefit. knowing the actual efficiency from ARI is important. those yellow tags don't reflect true efficiency or total unit. there are certian matches to achieve certain efficiencies. others less. best of luck.

Yeah, it doesn't show the size of the furnace anywhere in the 1st quote, all I can find is "SL280V 090V60C 2-stage 80%" everything has been 80k or 100k BTU so maybe one of those? I'll call the guy tomorrow and see if he can tell me. I'm really not sure about the house, probably a good 10 years or so at this point. Some of these quotes have a Fed Tax Credit and some have "and/or" Manufacturer Rebate. The first Lennox quote says $400 from Lennox + $400 from the power company. So $6,780-$800= $5,980 in the end. The guy that gave me the 2nd quote had a few other options, one was for a $10,000+ Carrier system but the other two quotes were: $6,912 Carrier PG92SAS60120D 92% 1 STG 120K BTU Payne PH13NB048000 4 Ton Condenser AC Carrier CNPVT4821ALA 4 Ton Evap Coil $8,217 Carrier 24ACB348A003 4 Ton single stage AC Carrier 59SC5A120S24-20 120K BTU Carrier CNPVT4821ALA 4 Ton Evap Coil I don't know why 120K BTU when everyone else was 80K but surely there's similar models that are smaller along that same line. All of these prices are assuming I'm paying full upfront, some quotes give 5% off if you pay in full, others took $500 off the equipment, etc. so I'm showing the lowest possible quote.

@tigerdunes: i have never lived in the house so i don't know if the old units were OK or not. this was a bank owned house. the existing units are a 2.5 ton condensor for the main level (about 1900 sq. feet) and a 4 ton condensor for the upstairs (about same sq. feet) I am not sure what the existing furnaces are. The rep said that they did a load calculation and recommended 3 ton and 4 ton replacements as there are no 2.5 ton Heat pump units. I don't understand why they are quoting me an 80% furnace though?

Auggie1020- looks like they're proposing heat pumps with the 80% furnace as the backup for a dual fuel system. This is what we have and are happy with in ATL (Rheem/Ruud). Our furnace is in the attic, so it would've been more complicated to go with a higher-efficiency unit for the furnace b/c of dealing with the condensate in winter.

I would want to have them give you an idea of where they think the balance point for the systems will be. That'll help you get a better idea of how much the gas will run. Since we don't get tons of super cold (winter before last excepted), having that as low as you can will minimize how much you have to spend on gas on top of the winter electric bill.

I have decided to spend the extra money for a 21 seer unit and 97% furnace. Can anyone comment on the following model numbers? The first model number is for the upstair 4 ton unit and the one on the right is for the 3 ton downstairs unit. Many thanks. Absolutely overkill considering location and its relatively mild winters.

The GreenSpeed/Extreme HP is best suited for locations with hard winters and those that have no access to nat gas and usually dependent on oil or propane heat.

Just curious. What is dealer charging for this bad boy?

You should be looking at a high eff furnace with straight AC or an 80% eff furnace paired with high eff heat pump.

Ask yourself thisvquestion. How often do you think you will use the modulating furnace in the system configuration? I know the answer. Do you?

Just trying to make you think about this decision as well as save you some bucks.

I would go with option 2 with the 15.5 seer heatpumps and 80% furnace. This is a plenty nice setup with very good efficiency. PRice is pretty good too for a dual system and for having 2 systems at $10,800. Going to a more expensive system is unnecessary since this one is so nice in my opinion. You will rarely need the gas but its nice you have it. 80% efficiency gas furnace is fine since its rarely used. That high efficiency heat pump will be used alot and is very efficient on A/C side and heating side for the majority of you needs.

Well, I'm sorry to report that I went ahead with the 21 SEER HP and 97% furnaces and it has not worked out. I wish I had seen Tigerdune's post before buying but I got injured and had to have surgery so was not in shape to be checking posts etc. In any case, tt seems that the company that installed the systems cannot get the zoning to work correctly (too much barometric pressure/air to the smaller zones and the heat does not work variably). To fix this, they installed manual bipass dampers and disabled most of the zoning dampers. It is a true mess. I think the company that sold me the units just does not have the expertise and training to properly install and maintain this type of high-end system. Just thought I would pass along my sad story so no one else falls into this trap. PS I am going to start a new post to see if anyone can offer advice on how to do damage control on this. Thanks.
