task bar questions

ravencajun, you seem to know a bunch! :) Can you tell me, how to remove the explorer icon on my task bar? I don't use explorer, but don't remember how I did that on my desktop computer that is in storage right now.

I have windows 7, and use firefox for my browser.

Guess, I should also figure out how to add the ad blocker some use, as they are getting quite annoying here.

I would also like to take off the windows media player icon. Don't use it often, and think it isn't necessary to be in the start up menu.

Duh! Thanks. Didn't get a delete option, but an "unpin" option.

Well - I restarted the computer - which enabled me to move the cursor over the task bar until I got a double arrow - then drag it down - and eliminate the second, lower task bar. Now I have a single task bar again - but most of my quick launch items are not there. The start menu and open windows are on the left. Time, print icon, volume icon, secunia icon (which now won't work for me - interminably keeps trying to load) and windows update icon are there. There is no left arrow As for fonts, I can't get them restored in my inbox. I tried changing the font style in firefox options - but nothing changed. Except now - just today - all the computer forum is in a new font and is bold (way too large and bold) - all other web pages are unchanged. Is that just a coincidence that the colors and fonts and boldness here have changed? I will try a system restore later - since several things seem out of whack. I did search the firefox forums - and many people reported this inbox font change since March. No real fixes - a few complicated sounding work-arounds. Doesn't sound like anyone there was happy with the suggested workarounds. Thanks. Lynn.

Can't get task bar the way I want

Thanks, Bob. I do see dots - but not near the notification area. It's in the quick launch area and task bar (which shows I have firefox opened) - just to the right of the start menu. So thanks to you instructions, I was able to drag it all back to the bottom. Good to know that keep task bar on top means showing. Now I'm down to just one problem. the notification icons are displaying in three rows. These rows are taking up 2 regular sized bars. I can get the start, firefox open browser tab and quick launch icons on the top line - but I can't make the bottom line disappear because the notifcation icons are taking up 3 small rows. There are no dots there - and I can't find a way to collapse them into a single line. Also - interestingly, the whole reason i started this venture was to get the safely remove hardware icon back. Even though I went to properties - and selected customize, and always show safely remove hardware icon, the icon is still not showing. And the clock is now displaying on three lines as well. Thanks. oklamoni, you must have windows 7. I do and it took me a while to get used to it. I like it now, but I miss the quick launch tool bar.

sorry I am late getting here but see you got your answer so that is good.

Yes you really do need to put ad block plus and the easy list on your firefox since you already use firefox.
Just go here to the ad block plus and click add to firefox you will then have to shut down firefox and restart then go here and under easylist click where it says add to adblock plus to add the easylist subscription then it is a good idea to restart firefox one more time.

Vala55, I have Quick Launch on my Windows 7 machine. It's easy to add. One of the first things I put on there. The link below says to move it to the left but I've always wanted Quick Launch to be to the right - next to the tray.

cynic I did that and I didn't see an arrow to pull the list up. The shortcuts were just strung out along the task bar and I couldn't find a way to make them bigger. I did some research and an MS tech suggested at least try the new task bar and I did. I had two or three things I really had to work at with W 7, but I stuck with it and solved the problems or adjusted. The main problem was the bright white screens, solved that one also. Thanks anyway.

Vala, remember when you first set up the Quick launch the folder is probably empty so you need to add some things to it. Once you put some things in there it should give you the chevron to the side of it. Here's another pretty good site on it. It also addresses the small/large icons.
