Gmail font and boldness changed/ and task bar changed

Today I noticed that my gmail inbox looks different. The font has changed and the bold is barely darker than the non-bold - which means I cannot easily see which emails are unread (gmail has these in bold). I searched on gmail but can't figure out what happened. My gmail account in my office looks the same as always. And gmail looks the same on my daughter's computer.

My computer is Windows xp sp2, firefox browser.

The other thing that happened is that my task bar changed appearance. First it disappeared. I played around with settings but I cannot get a single bottom bar - where it used to have the start tab, then any open windows, and then to the right all the quick launch items and the time. I have the start tab and open window tab. Then a lot of empty space - and it's a double bar. Then all the way to the right is the three lines stacked - time, then day, then date. These used to all appear in a single line (bar). I can't seem to figure out how to restore it to it's former appearance.

Rebooting or restarting the computer might help.

Also if you place the mouse cursor on the task bar line, right on the line by an empty area wait for it to change to a double arrow when it does "Left click hold and drag towards bottom" this will re - size the task bar.

No clue about G-Mail.....

you can do a simple system restore which should restore your previous task bar settings to how they were.

My gmail looks as it always does no changes

I believe this is the solution. Got this mssg from my son not long after my OP. I did not know he was looking into it. It is long. >>Looks like you're using Outlook Express 6, which hasn't been updated in years. Cue standard rant about upgrading.... I looked at the "source code" of the mail, which shows what the actual text of the message is, and I can see that it's using a multi-part format. Part 1 is a plain text version of the email, and Part 2 is the HTML version of the email. That version doesn't have any indication of what font to use, so you changing it on your side wouldn't make any difference. Take a look at this: http://ask-leo.com/why_does_my_email_sometimes_show_up_with_funny_characters_like_0d_in_it.html It seems that your client is using "quoted-printable" which might be causing some of the problems for people using newer email clients. Maybe. I don't see the odd "=" signs sprinkled around, but they might be interfering with the HTML rendering on some clients. When I read your email in gmail via its website, your email looks okay. (The blue background and tiny font is stripped away.) But when I use a local email application (Mac's Mail.App), the blue background is still there, and the font is smaller than my selected default, but not TOO small, which means, I think, that the quoted-printable stuff is correctly interpreted. When I use Sparrow Mail (a desktop app that integrates with gmail), it's tiny. Sparrow is a brand new application, so they've probably not yet felt the need to deal with old-school quoted-printable content.OK back to me in OEX 6...........I went to: Tools > Options > Send > Mail Sending Format > Settings (HTML or Plain, whichever) > Encode text using: (None or Quoted Printable or Base 64) choose None. I had been sending email using HTML with the MIME mssg format setting 'Encode text using: Quoted Printable' . I changed that to None. The Plain Text Mime Format was set by default to: 'Encode text using: None'. I then sent emails to my Inbox account both HTML and Plain Text. The Plain Text-None font came out proper size. The HTML - None font was still tiny. Now why was I using HTML all these years? Well the HTML Compose Pane has a format toolbar. The Plain Text pane does not. Evidently with OEX 6 you can have formatting ability or Plain Text - not both. On my Yahoo account the choice is Rich Text with formatting or Plain without. So it would seem I need to use OEX Plain Text or another email program to eliminate recipients getting tiny font mssgs.

Hi, Genes. I'm afraid I'm not following you. I use Gmail - and don't use an email client. So I'm talking about the single lines in the inbox that state the sender, subject and time. The subject and sender used to appear in bold for unread emails. Now the unread emails are not in bold - and are not visually distinct from the read emails. I get many, many emails a day (listservs etc), so quickly being able to scan my inbox for the new emails is important. I have literally spent a couple of hours searching the net - and gmail forums for solutions. All I find is a lot of mentions of the problems when gmail gets updated - and those complaints are from various times in the past year. But no solutions (except a couple of suggestions for adding the stylish add-on to regain contrast). I did the firefox stylish add-on but it didn't do anything. This problem seems like something gmail would have fixed or allowed to be altered in settings. But I've poured through settings and can't restore the contrast. Thanks. Lynn.

Gretchen, there is no longer a conversation page. What's interesting is they said there would be no separate 'Exchanges' page, but it's still on the opening page Texas Garden Exchange and clicking it will take you there. However, the posts for the Ft. Worth Trinity Park and San Antonio plant swap originally posted there have somehow ended up on the 'main' forum. Oh well ... Anyway I inquired to Houzz why I could not edit my 'plants for swapping list' on the "WANTED: San Antonio Plant Swap" thread and received this reply: "Thanks for reaching out. Just for clarification, original posts can be edited for up to one hour to allow for typo corrections, but comments can be edited for up to one week. Sorry for any confusion!" The one hour thing includes editing the subject line. I just tried it on the 'defunct' Texas Garden Exchange.

Well - I restarted the computer - which enabled me to move the cursor over the task bar until I got a double arrow - then drag it down - and eliminate the second, lower task bar. Now I have a single task bar again - but most of my quick launch items are not there. The start menu and open windows are on the left. Time, print icon, volume icon, secunia icon (which now won't work for me - interminably keeps trying to load) and windows update icon are there. There is no left arrow As for fonts, I can't get them restored in my inbox. I tried changing the font style in firefox options - but nothing changed. Except now - just today - all the computer forum is in a new font and is bold (way too large and bold) - all other web pages are unchanged. Is that just a coincidence that the colors and fonts and boldness here have changed?

I will try a system restore later - since several things seem out of whack. I did search the firefox forums - and many people reported this inbox font change since March. No real fixes - a few complicated sounding work-arounds. Doesn't sound like anyone there was happy with the suggested workarounds.

I just did a system restore to Monday morning - before the fonts changed. My task bar and quick launch items were all restored. I am able to load Secunia.

But - my gmail fonts remain too small - with a barely discernible difference between read and unread mail (bold and nonbold).

Any other thoughts? Again, gmail is fine on three other computers I've tried.

Finally - after looking online at complicated solutions, I saw a simple one - and that did it. Once on the gmail inbox page, I just pressed Control +. And the font size was restored. Now how it got shrunk in the first place, I don't know - but it probably happened when my daughter used my computer to check her email. It was later that night that the fonts were off.

And restoring the font size, also restored the boldness.

PS - this forum was too big bc. I had changed the font size in firefox - but it hadn't appeared changed on any other web pages so I didn't realize that change had stuck.
