Compose on Gmail

I have a laptop that runs on Windows 8.1, Internet Explorer 11, and my email is gmail. (I also have Google Chrome.

When I am typing an email, it will suddenly disappear. I cannot figure out what I hit to make that happen. It is not delete or control. My laptop has a pad, but I seldom use it --choosing the mouse instead.

When I look through tools, I cannot find out why this happens. Whatever it is, I barely touch it, and I think it is with my left hand while I type.

Could any of you help me? Also, often the font goes to 25 or so, but I know how to go to the zoom, and reset it. Once the email that I am typing disappears, I never find it.

Thanks,
Sammy

It could be a number of things.

While writing an email - in compose mode - if you :

-- Hit the [Esc] key the email will disappear and be saved in Drafts

-- click on the top bar - the one that ends at the right with the close X, the same thing will happen.

-- Hit [Cnrl] + [a] , everything will be selected, and the next key you hit will overwrite everything.

Many strange things happen with laptops users where the mouse pad has not been disabled. Even though you are not using it, if it is still active and you unknowingly brush it while typing on the keypad, the laptop can do things you don't want it to. If you really don't use the mouse pad, you should go into your settings and see if there is an option to disable the mouse pad when an external mouse is being used. Otherwise, keep well clear of it or tape something over it so you can't enter accidental inputs via the mouse pad.

Larry, Glad to hear you solved your immediate problem ! :-) Re: Gmail compose font size, I don't think there's much you can do about it. What you see is what you get. For now it seems you have to find the right balance between the style of the font and its display size. Perhaps, though, someone may be working on a "Lab" feature to address this issue. ?? Also, for future reference, you (and/or your wife) could peruse the Email Discussions Forum. There are many threads on email providers, whether you're looking for a new one or just trying to solve a problem with one you have. They have lots of helpful people to assist you. There are a few provider-specific sections, too (for Runbox, Fastmail and Gmail -- though only the first two have contributions from actual representatives of those services). Maybe look in event viewer and look for red x errors at and after last reboot. Some if you follow the link even will suggest fixes. Its odd that its both firefox and ie & only yahoo you seem to have the trouble. Maybe in control panel, Java .. perhaps clear both cache's and I would assume you have cleared your internet cache's. Another thing to try is to run checkdisk (R-click C-drive, tools) or ; chkdsk /f and at boot it will run error checking on the disk and file system. And you might also try system file checker from boot too, you may or may not be able to use it .. from the run line or open a cmd window . SFC /ScanOnce i think. I forget XP exacts so cmd window is better as it will show success/error for the command ... it will run at next boot. What service pack level on xp ? perhaps reinstall if that is an option with the SP#. Bout all I can think of at the moment. Hope Error Logs show the problem. Then you have something to go by.

How do I get gmail to be default mail program on iMac
Q
Comments (4)
Huh? No, the question is what email service is the native email program (Apple Mail, in this case on a Mac) set up to connect to. That setting needs to be entered once for every so-called mail "client" app or program on a PC, Smartphone, or tablet. It has nothing to do with default program relationships for file types. Ginny, I know how to do it on ipads and iphones but not immediately on Macs. I have two Macs in the family but neither is here right now for me to look at. A Google search found the following two approaches, they differ perhaps depending on which version of Apple Mail you have. But either or a combination of the two should get you where you want to be. If these don't work, again, refer to an Apple forum. #1 To Set Up Your Apple Mail From the Mail menu, select Preferences. Go to the Accounts tab, and then click the plus sign(+) at the bottom of the Accounts box. In the Add Account window, enter your full name, email address and email password. Click Continue. or #2 To begin, click on the Mail -> Add Account... menu. On this screen, you will be asked about the type of account you will be adding to the application. Select the last option - Add Other Mail Account...Continue button. Now, simply add your name, email address and the password for it. ++++++++++++++++++++ Edited to add As a quick alternative, just start your browser (Safari), go to and log into gmail, compose a new message and then add the photo as an attachment. You'll need to know the location of the photo on the PC to do that and you probably can do a drag and drop for attaching it.

Kent, it is not any of those. My top line has esc, but I would have to stretch to get to it. I don't have an x to close, and my Ctrl is a stretch at the bottom. Thanks.

Kudzu, I don't often us the mouse pad, but want to if I need it. That can always be a possibility, but I have made huge attempts to avoid it.

If I pause a minute, and sometimes even if I do not pause, my cursor goes to a different place on the page.

I am afraid that gmail is not truly aligned with Windows 8.1. Without even pausing my cursor went to the upper paragraph and was after the word even. However, since I am on the Garden Web, gmail might not even be in control.

Thanks for trying to help.

sammy-
A mouse that jumps around on a laptop is a key symptom of interaction with the mouse pad; many people are unaware that they have lightly brushed it. If you have the option to disable it, you can easily go in and re-enable it. Some laptops have the option: "Disable mouse pad when external mouse is plugged in," so, once you select this, you never have to go back in to change the settings; the mouse pad is off when you are using the mouse and, when you unplug the mouse, the mouse pad becomes active again. Have you gone into your settings to see what you have?

Kudzu, thanks. I found it in the control panel, and the wording was as you stated. I clicked it, selected apply and ok. I have high hopes now that this problem will be fixed. Perhaps in the future I will be able to handle a pad better than I can now.

Sammy-
I have high hopes, too: if that doesn't work I'm going to be really stumped!

I hope that fixed it for you.

When I was using gmail I started getting emails that were blank and when I googled for solutions I found a lot of others had the same problem. I finally gave up on gmail.

This only addresses one small part of your trouble, but I may have a tip regarding the mouse cursor moving on it's own. I encountered this problem on a machine that I helped to maintain. The solution in that case was to open the mouse settings in control panel and uncheck "pointer precision". That was years ago, Windoze XP SP2. I don't have access to Windoze 8, so I don't know if the same option exists now. Might be worth a look.
