Makayla gets an apprentice

Since Makayla is not allowed to have her own Gardenweb account, being under age, she has to post on my account. Here goes:

My cousin, Madison, and I spent a day at Grandma's house because it was spring break and Mom and Dad had to work, and we wanted to bake something. We decided to bake oatmeal cookies. Madison likes to pour stuff in the bowl, so we let her add the flour:

We also made pizza for lunch, and then Madi had to go home. Brother and I spent the night and we made some apple French toast. You make it the night before and then bake it in the oven and it was really, really good. Grandma had canned some apple spice syrup and we put that over top. Elery said it was dessert, but I thought it was a really good breakfast.

Grandma let me use her cookie scoop to make the oatmeal cookies and now I want one. Grandma says she'll buy me one. Maybe two, different sizes!

Its so sweet of you to start teaching Madison what to do in the kitchen. Did you enjoy the cookies?

That apple French toast sounds and looks so good. Elery may have said it was dessert, but I bet he enjoyed it, too.

You're very lucky to have such a wonderful Grandma teach you how to cook. And she is one of the best cooks around. Enjoy your cookie scoops and use them often.

I wish I could cook as good as you, looks yummy.

It so good to see you and Madison are working on projects together. BeauLily have a close relationship with their cousins and I think it's important to be friends with cousins as well as relatives. It makes family get togethers fun and memorable.

melly, you live in a Barbie Dream House? LOL I'm telling Makayla that, she'll be so jealous. You are right about the sprinkles tasting good, Amanda was eating them right out of the box. The kids really liked the different colored ones in the little boxes and they were eating them like candy. I still have some left, though, Makayla is going to have a "sleep over" with me in the next couple of weeks and we're going to put some on waffles. Thanks again for the treat, it made our cookie baking so much fun. I'll have to tell Makayla and Bud they can put them in hot chocolate too! Annie

Yes, John, she does look "pro" doing it. Especially those lemons for eyes, LOL. She's wanting to find a new recipe every time she comes over, and try it, then if it's good we'll print the recipe and put it in her own cookbook. We're trying for some easy stuff that she can make herself, as her Mom works midnights and is sleeping during the day. She thinks it would be nice to make dinner sometimes so it would be ready when her Mom gets up. Annie

Well, Makayla has gone home. She spent the night here, as did her brother, and she had a great time. She doesn't have internet access at home, heck, I can't even get a cell phone signal out there at the farm. So, she can only post here, at her Dad's shop or at school. I told her that she could email her food pictures to me and I'd put them on Photobucket for her, though, so watch for more! Sol, I remember that dress. I'm sure it was apples, because you also sent me some napkins with green apples around the same time. I still use them, although Makayla has long outgrown the dress, LOL. Hopefully this year she can post her own Fair pictures, and she's hoping to start a small roadside farm stand with some baked goods and jam (allowable under Michigan's Cottage Food Law), so she can make some money for her college fund. She's already thought of a name, "Makayla's Munchies". Plus, it gives her an excuse to spend some more time baking with Grandma, who conveniently provides the ingredients. (grin) Her brother has generously offered his services as official "taster", just to make sure "no one gets sick". Ahem. Annie

Judy, I'm the luckiest of us, I know that. Even weeding and hoeing is better with The Princess and Bruvver to keep me entertained. As for the produce, I'm about 90 miles south of Traverse City and the things that are doing well are things that can tolerate cold weather, like beans, cabbage, pumpkins. I've gotten half a dozen cucumbers when usually by this time I'd have made quarts of Chase's dill pickles. The corn is just starting to make ears, it's weeks late and I don't have a ripe tomato yet. The eggplant have given up and the peppers are so small that if they actually bear fruit I think it'll knock them over. So, that beautiful garden you see is selective, LOL. I didn't show you the parts that aren't doing so well! Sol, that boy is happy nearly all the time. He can be doing the naughtiest thing possible but he'll have that big smile on his face. The only time he's cranky is if he's tired or hungry. We're supposed to hit 90 on Sunday, first time this year. Stacy, I'll send a bit of that your way! Annie

Madison looks professional. She will be another great cook in the family.

Keep making oatmeal cookies, but not broth.

Have your heard the expression, "too many cooks spoil the broth"? :-)

I really like the idea of baked apple French toast - it sounds a bit like a combination of bread pudding and Apple Betty. Who created the recipe? I would like to try making it, and I think that baking is better for French toast so that all servings get done at the same time. Maybe I will have my own apples to use this fall.

You're lucky that you get time off for Spring Break - I did not have that when I was in school. In Texas, schools did not have Spring Break bakc then so that the school year could end earlier in May, before it got to be too unbearably hot. Now they have more air conditioning.

Oatmeal cookies are one of my all time favorites, and I used to make them with granola and chocolate chips. The granola made them more crunchy, but I had to reduce the amount of sugar because the granola was sweet. What do you like to add to your oatmeal cookies?

MMmmMMMmmMMmmMMmmmm! It all looks wonderful Makayla. You are nice to let Madi dump in the flour. I bet she made a big cloud with it. I would rather have dessert for breakfast any day. Keep up the good work. I like your posts.
