Lion King Evening Update

Last night was our big Lion King evening. I'd bought the tickets back in early February and, OMG, our 3rd row center seats were drop-dead fantastic! I'd been worried that they might be too close, but in our theater (Popejoy Hall in Albuquerque), these seats were perfect. We were less than 40 feet from the stage (I think 30 ft actually), which allowed us to see the wonderful, intricate details of their makeup, costumes and set designs.

The opening number, where many of the "animals" slowly walk down the aisles on each side of the center seating where we were, to the stage took our breath away.

The costumes were brilliantly designed and stunning to see up close. The acting and music was wonderful.

I have to say that for me personally, "The Lion King" is now my favorite of all the musicals that I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of them.

DH & I made a special date night out of this and had a leisurly romantic dinner before the theater at a wonderful French restaurant we love. Being empty nesters has definite advantages these days!

Anyhoo, I can't say enough good things about this magical show and highly recommend it to anyone . . . and come prepared to be blown away.

I'm adding some pics below for those of you who, like me, had not previously seen the gorgeous costumes for this musical.

Glad you enjoyed the evening! See, I remember several here sharing that the "empty nester" phase could be a very good thing!

Lynn, I am so happy you had a glorious evening! Thank you for sharing.

I love the theater SO much that I am not a good critic because I can find something wonderful in every performance I see.

I saw this little Victory rose on sale at the grocery store this morning, and I knew it would be the perfect fit for my lion pot. I've never had a rose before, so I'm excited about my first. The red flowers aren't a perfect match for the red pot, but I think they go well together. The rose already looks happy that it's out of a 4 inch plastic pot, and it's spreading out! I can't believe that my lion went from "junk" to our dining room table centerpiece! Glad I've been able to share this with all of you.

Jay That's the one! And just yesterday, my Interface on AOL had the video of Ann Heile's ordeal about the Mountain Lion attack she survived although with terrible disfiguration of her face, and multiple reconstruction surgeries. I know she and her family are just thanking God she survived. It could easily have been fatal. If we are going to have to live with these predators, we'd all be well advised to know what to do, 'in case of'. I'm asking my son to please be armed and alert when camping and treking in the wildernesses where he often goes, in NM, Utah and Wyoming. Ann's video can be seen on this link. It's shocking. Marlene - I saw a couple of clips of "The Hoff" in J&H and yes, he was very good! Constantine Margoulis of American Idol fame will be playing the lead in the production I'm seeing. I'm curious about Book of Mormon! I know nothing about it, but the woman who sold me the package of tickets that I bought told me that by subscribing, I would be among those to get first dibs on BoM tickets, and that I absolutely should not hesitate when I receive the phone call that they've gone on sale. I've seen a few plays in London: The Importance of Being Earnest (starring Patricia Routledge), We Will Rock You (weird, but the music was great), and a production by The Reduced Shakespeare Company which was absolutely hilarious. I'm hoping Mom and I have the opportunity to see a show when we're back in the UK next year.

IÂve just finished to read The prince of Tides, which I read more or less twenty years ago for the first time. Of course I remebred very well what the book was about, but rerading it I was able to get back a lot of details that I had lost. In particular I remebered the strongest passages of WingoÂs family, and I had lost the "poetic" pages. An other thing, IÂm now able to compared the book and the film, because I saw it many times lately, in order to improve my listening-skills. In my opinion the book and the film are complementary to each other , the book tells Tom Wingo memories for 80% of the story and 20% is about Tom in New York, the movie is just the other way around. I think Barbra Streisand did a great job, and always in my humble opinion, she has improved a few naiveties of the author of the book, Pat Conroy. For instance doctor Lowenstein is far much believeble as psychiatrist, in the film than in the book. now I cut and past a little of the plot , for whom havenÂt read the book nor seen the film Things come to a head when Tom learns that his beautiful and talented twin, Savannah, has tried to commit suicide again. As she lays comatose in a New York City mental hospital, Savannah's psychiatrist, Susan Lowenstein, urges Tom to travel to New York. Doctor Lowenstein realizes that the only thing that can help save Savannah is to unlock the secrets of her terrible childhood (something that all the Wingo children have long suppressed and refuse to talk about). Tom flies to New York reluctantly, and at first, presents Dr. Lowenstein with a faÃ§ade made up of humor, sarcasm and even rudeness. But Dr. Lowenstein eventually is able to break down Tom's protective shell to discover the horrors that took place during the Wingo's childhood. She also realizes that in trying to save Savannah, that this might also be Tom's last chance to save himself. But it turns out that Lowenstein has erected her own protective mask to hide her own unhappiness. With a remote husband and a spoiled son, Tom is able to turn the tables and help the good doctor in promoting a little self-healing as well. Now IÂm nearly through with "The Confessions of Max Tivoli" and IÂve got conflicting feelings about it. I hope , with the beginning of the discussion I will be able to clear up my mind grelobe

What spectacular costumes! (I wanna be a zebra! ;-)) I'm so glad that you and your DH had such an enjoyable evening. 3rd row center seats? WOW!

It looks and sounds fabulous Lynn!! I want to take my 6 year old GS also. 3rd row seats....hmmm, will have to check that out here. If you're going to 'see' a play, you really do want to 'see' and i've always found the extra bucks are usually worth it. ;o)

Sounds like you and your DH had a wonderful evening. Definitely agree about the benefits of being empty nesters! The Lion King is one of my favorite shows too.

Lynn, this is probably a silly question, but we have never been to a show before and I see that Scotland's Black Watch will be performing in March and I think my Dh would love tickets for that. But I am curious, what is the standard dress for an evening show?

Tishtoshnm...I have been to he theater in all sorts of places, to the Met Opera, Broadway, to Chicago Theaters, to the theater in Italy.....and as far as dress.....anything goes....you will see people in jeans and suspenders, spiked hair and 4 inch platforms, tuxedos, long beaded gowns,....whatever.
Just dress as you would for a nice night out...or however you feel comfortable.
Scotland's Black Watch? I hear that is very intense.....will be anxious to hear from someone other than a reviewer.

Thank you Lindac. NM definitely is a casual place but I did not want to show up woefully underdressed. I now see that there is a show entitled Black Watch based upon the company's experiences in Iraq and that is not what we are looking at but rather, a performance by the band. Dh adores bagpipes, me, not so much but I can deal with it for him.

Lindac is right. Same here in my area. I've seen people in very formal clothing, and others in jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers. I personaly like to dress up a bit for the theater -- it just makes it feel all the more special to me to do so -- but nobody is going to give anyone a second glance if they're in very casual wear. Besides, it's dark in there. ;-)

Tish, you're right, here in New Mexico events can be a bit more casual sometimes.
I think any theater event deserves to be special, though. If we go during the week, I always wear somethings along the lines of what I wore this past Wednesday evening for the "Lion King": a pair of black dress slacks, a cream lace camisole, a brown (evening/dressy) jacket with a bold Autumny necklace.
On a Friday or Saturday evening, I'll ramp it up a bit with maybe a little black dress and some special jewelry, a mid-calf dressy skirt and top, a dressy pair of black slacks and a velvet jacket, an evening suit, etc. I almost never see women wearing long dresses. They'd look overdressed around these parts.

Anyhoo, I highly recommend "The Lion King" and would go again myself in a heartbeat.

I remember when you purchased these tickets and I responded that you would NOT be disappointed. I didn't want to spoil it for you, but I knew once you experienced the opening number, that you would be happy with your purchase. So glad you had such a special night!
