Gas dryers w/right-side vents?!
Comments (11)Thanks, all. The Mieles sound wonderful, but they're out of my price range. That's interesting about the Speed Queen, but their front loading washer is too expensive for me. Whirlpool seems clear that the Duets I'm considering will vent through the right side, so that's probably what I'll end up with. Dave, my Home Depot has landed (probably due to the economy) some terrific plumbers and electricians, people who really know their stuff and have been very helpful throughout our DIY build. But I agree, the appliance people are just that -- salespeople, and not particularly knowledgeable. Live and learn! So many opportunities for that this year. For instance, who would have thought that a water heater would be shipped with the drain valve in the open position? It certainly never occurred to our plumber...!...See MoreIdeas for Side Venting a Dryer (and Washer) Installed in a Kitchen
Comments (31)We are on the cusp of placing orders for our appliances. So I wandered back by this thread and noticed the new responses. Mikelock, I love your "after" photo. We're about the finalize our layout, and I keep considering going under-counter instead of stacked. It's a lot of fun to see another real life installation. That extra run of counter must be so nice. Chris Park, thanks for your perspective on how the condensing dryer is performing for you. I was scared off initially by the many negative comments about condensing dryers, but I later became more hopeful when I noticed that many comments note that clothes come out with only an initial dampness - if that makes sense. We're finally going to place our order this week, after much heel dragging from me. The plan for a long time has been Blomberg units (the heat pump dryer sounds like a good idea), although in the 11th hour there is some temptation to order Asko units (condensing dryer) that would match the SS appliances. I guess we'll panic and select one soon!...See MoreLooking for a *side-venting* stackable washer/dryer
Comments (9)Wow! That laundry room on page 19 I would love that! It is too bad they didn't mention the GE brand as it has a vented dryer and because if you look at its ratings on Home Depot and Lowes you'll find that it is very well rated and it's about the same price as the Electrolux both of which are much less then the Bosch, Asko, Miele group. (Can you tell I like my GE vented dryer (the vent is about 1 foot long)?) I cannot guess at the insides of the Miele dryer but to me the main issue with the new fire code is that you use ducting that is also fire resistant, no more plastic ducting. You still have to keep the entire run clear and if the run is too long you really should be looking at a condenser type dryer instead of a vented dryer. The advantage of having a vented dryer disappears where the vent run is long or where the vent ducting is located in a place you cannot clean it. Unfortunately, I do not think that most people bother to clean their dryer vent even once a year....See MoreHow difficult to change from stacked washer & dryer to a side by side
Comments (7)I'm not a contractor, but whether things can be changed after rough in would probably depend on how it's plumbed and if it's sitting on slab or basement or what. Assuming you don't somehow have gas and/or water coming up from slab that would have to be dramatically changed, it should be feasible. I've re-routed plumbing and electric to move from a side by side to stacked laundry setup in a finished house without issue. Would not have been a problem to go back to side by side either. You definitely want washer on the left or you may also have washer and dryer doors banging into each other and damaging one another. I like the side by side a bit better, mostly because it's easier to scoop laundry left to right than it is down to up. Though maybe it was better for my glutes to have stacked since I had to constantly squat then stand to transfer laundry from washer to dryer......See Morehousefairy
