For those of you with exzema...(long)

I've been battling exzema for 15+ years, have been to allergists, dermatologists, and they have not recommended anything (other than oral steroids), that helps alleviate the discomfort...until recently. Last year DH and I changed primary doctors in our group. We did so because our primary care physician was difficult to get an appointment with. Many times we had to see her PA, which isn't a bad thing because he's pretty good. When we changed primary docs, we did so on th recommendation of other folks. So for the past year+ we've been seeing a very lovely young(er) female doctor, Dr. A. DH was first seen by her last year when she diagnosed him with bladder cancer...that was his first visit with her and she was absolutely wonderful. She held our hands through the whole ordeal, from diagnosis to recommending a urologist/cancer specialist to follow-up and more. We got through that painful time and DH's prognosis is excellent. Fast forward to a few months ago, when I had another severe bout with exzema, this time affecting my face, ears, and worst of all, my scalp. Some of my hair was coming out because of the inflammation and crusting. Rather than going to an allergist, I chose to see Dr. A. While she was examining me, she whipped out her Palm Pilot, researched exzema and contact dermatitis, and based on her research determined the best course of treatmant. No oral steroids, because she doesn't like to prescribe them umless absolutely necessary. She decided on two separate prescriptions, one for my face and one for my scalp. Then she told me to stop using all commercial shampoos on my hair and scalp except for Aveeno body wash or Aveeno baby shampoo. And then she told me what Indian women have been doing for years, and that is treating their hair and bodies with almond oil. She also told me not to wash my hair every day, just rinse it. She suggested I apply almond oil to my hair and scalp every other day, and wash my hair only 2 times a week, rinsing in between the days I shampoo. I have used olive oil on my hair for years, not regularly, just when it's winter and the heat dries me out. She said that almond oil has no scent, is lighter than olive oil, and is easily absorbed into the skin. She also said not to use coconut oil like many people do because it's absorbed into the bloodstream and could raise your blood cholesterol level in some cases. She also told me that she massages almond oil into her, her DH's, and her children's skin every day before they bathe. Noone in her family has had any dry skin or exzema. Since I've always washed my hair daily this was a toughie for me, but I trust her and wanted to give her recommendations a go.

Based on her recommendations, which I found almost holistic in nature, I took her advice and purchased almond oil in our local market. Son of a gun...it's great! I have to say it's soothing, not really oily, and feels almost therapeutic.

I've been doing this for a while and my skin is glowing, soft, supple, and healthy. I no longer use hand or body moisturizers, my hair and scalp are no longer dry, I don't need "regular" shampoo or conditioners, and my hair has regained it's long-lost body and shine. DH are so glad we found this wonderful, caring, progressive, and thorough doctor.
