The light is too much. Too big under an 8' ceiling.

Can you mock up the light to make sure it won't seem too low? (I determined the length of our pendant schoolhouse lights by making something similar dimensions from paper plates, pieces of cardboard, and string.)

It sounds to me like your kitchen can use the bling from the light, and I love the pulls. However, the pulls seem rustic and the light seems much more formal and dressy. Will it be in a finish that will more closely match the finish of the pulls, instead of the shiny brass? If so, and if the size is right for your room, I think it could be a nice choice.

i don't think your choice is too plain... i think it's classic/timeless. and I think you're right to look to lighting for some "bling"!

plus you can punch decor/color in other areas besides walls - curtains, braided rugs, canisters, a plant hung from the ceiling etc

I'd get the dark antique (similar to ORB) on the hardware. The old light fixture has very dark bronze finish.

I currently have a hideous ceiling fan light fixture that hangs down 16".

I was thinking about making some valances from some old tablecloths, but that might be getting too "country collectible".

Those pulls are gorgeous! Care to share the source (tho they're probably out of my price range).

They are from Horton Brasses. Mamadadapaige suggested the company to someone a few weeks back and I came across these pulls. I love antique roses (and have always wanted to visit Lindisfarne (Holy Island)

They are a bit pricey, about $15 each - that's one reason I am still on the fence about them. (although I don't need many for my small kitchen). The plain brass knobs I'd get from them are only $5 and they have a flat rate $5 shipping fee which is a deal. (I hate being gouged for shipping).

We have the three chain lamps in our bedrooms - well, had them, removed them to redo the rooms and will put them back as they are original to the house and love them, but they don't scream kitchen to me. We went with schoolhouse as they collect a lot of dirt in those shades. We have 8 foot ceilings too.

Where did you find that one - Rejuvination just started selling new bases but are $$$ and I need a bunch in ORB... I've been looking for other options.

I love the pulls too, especially in ORB for your creamy cabinets. I agree with rhome that the light's a bit fussy for the rest of the look. Have you looked on ebay for antique lighting? I've found some really nice things there for very little money.

I guess I'm saying, they're not too low, and could be lower if the're over furniture or cabinets.

I really think they're lovely. I'm not sure they flow well with the pulls though, so I'd say if you love the pulls better, don't choose this lighting. Personally I love the lighting, so I'd skip those pulls

Thanks again. I am still not sure, of course! I really love antique lights. The one I'm looking at doesn't seem quite so fussy, I guess because it's old and weathered.

I am considering other options, yes on eBay. Usually the hanging fixtures are used under a table or something,. This room has neither table, nor bar, nor island.

pcjs - I've seen lots of shades like these, but no fixtures-only auctions in my searches!

I don't dislike the schoolhouse ones, they just seem so expensive for something so plain. I have been looking at ebay, and the schoolhouse ones tend to go for more $$, I think, because they are currently very popular.

Igloochic - I always wanted to tell you how much I love your lighting! I love old lights and need one for my dining room. I hope you catch that thread when I get a picture to post. I also really like that picture in the mini-bath - the cats in the tree - very charming!

I got my lighting at Revival Lighting. It's all antique/vintage style lighting but brand new! You can pick which ceiling canopy, chain or pole (I got pole), the shade, the finish, the overall length etc. They custom make them, and I thought they were pretty reasonably compared to the same old, same old lighting fixtures I had been seeing. I have one of a kind lights! Dave there was wonderful.
