I don't find memory foam to be to hot, but we don't live in a hot climate.

If they are young children and still might have an accident, I wouldn't go with foam any way.
If they are for single beds, I wouldn't spend to much money on them..because they will grow out of single beds by 13-14 if not sooner if they are tall.

I would get a mid range standard mattress for them if it were me.

I would go with a mid range price with coils (inner springs) and make sure that they have the foam supported edges that is really important. We just bought a new custom made mattress for the RV and I learned a lot from the guy who helped me. If you sit down on the side of the mattress and it doesn't have the strong foam support around the edges you can see how the mattress collapsed the springs go to the edge where they sag under the weight. With a strong foam edge when you sit down on the edge it stays the same it doesn't collapse.

The one I bought is locally made and they custom make mattresses for odd shapes and sizes like for 18 wheeler beds and RV beds. I wanted to make sure I got one made in the US and with US materials.
I didn't pay more for it than a regular store bought.
Check out the mattress stores in your area for locally made mattresses, you won't find them at the big name stores.
But definitely get the side edges foam support. Especially for boys think about how often you are sitting on the edge that support really matters and helps protect the springs. You can also get the individually wrapped Springs which are the type you see on TV with the wine glasses not moving when you jump on the bed but for kids that is not necessary, just good connected coils with the foam is good. I would not recommend memory foam.

I bought a foam mattress about a year ago. I had not wanted one because I had heard that they were hot, but there are some on the market now, like mine, that have cooling gel in them. I'm very comfortable with that aspect of it. It did take some time to get used to the foam mattress, though, but after a month or so, I was fine with it.

Pillow top mattresses can be very tall, expecially if the pillow "top" is on both sides (so when you flip it, you still have a pillow top). Kinda hard to get into if you have an already tall frame. I have mine on a frame that is barely off of the ground, and it works well.

Doesn't all foam eventually go flat? A friend experienced that with a 'foam' mattress.

We've had mattresses from Verlo all our married life (50 years this autumn). They are a small company that started in Chicago, now with branches in several states.

A few years ago I was thinking about discarding a mattress (and it's dust mite dirt) sooner, so I opted for something less expensive than the mattresses we'd usually kept ten years.

The showroom had 2 X 2 samples of the various grades of mattress. There was a considerable difference in weight between the 'better' type and the one I chose; there was simply more *to* the better one. I liked being able to see and feel the differences, not just hear a spiel about coils, wrapping, amount of cotton batting, etc.

BTW, I'm sorry I didn't go for the 'better' grade and look for a wrapper against dust mites.

We've always had a pair of extra-long twins used together as a king. At least we can turn these without outside help!

Most college dorms have extra-long twins; I see adds for extra-long bed linens every fall! That might work better than a double bed for a boy's room. Our DS had a trundle bed -- used for sleepovers.

There's a good article in Consumer Reports about buying mattresses (Nov issue?). You could get a copy of the article at your library.

I have heard from many people that a flat top innerspring mattress with a purchased foam topper is the way to go. All pillow tops eventually get "canoes" in them so this way you just buy a new topper rather than a whole new mattress.

I was in the unt for a new mattress before the holidays and will get back to tit soon. I loved a mattress I tried at Verlo and will probably get that one. It is a flat top inner spring. I tired one of their foam. mattresses and it was wonderful except the edges are squooshy. I use my hands to push off the edge of the bed to get up and the foam was too soft for that.

I need a recommendation for a name brand king mattress for our Maui vacation rental condo. I want a regular two-sided innerspring -- no pillowtops, gels, foams -- that stuff ages too fast in this climate. I'm guessing it will run around $1,000 like our present one. I've read that a king should have at least 475 coils. Ravencajun stresses foam edging. What else?

Our current Serta "Forest Glen - Firm" is one-sided -- weighs a TON with lots of wood framing -- is sagging after only three years. (How clever of the mattress industry not to make a king mattress *square*; it's slightly longer than it is wide. You can't rotate it a quarter turn.)

On Maui we have Sears, Macy's, and various "beds r us" places. The Costco only stocks California Kings, and I want a wider European King. I think it would take ages to get a Verlo shipped out here.

Help! Our backs are sore! We are getting 'crabby'.

I think while you are waiting you can rotate a quarter turn, removing the wood framing if necessary. Back pain from a mattress that is seriously sagging can be increasingly painful.
Either that or just get a good mattress from a store there for now, if you want to order some non stock larger one.

Macy's online is having a huge matteress sale. Read up online..then visit the store to check a few out..

DH and I once checked into the Drake Hotel in Chicago for a weekend (before DS). The bed seemed odd to me. They'd put the king mattress on sideways -- and it was too late to call housekeeping. I can't remember if we slept on it the way it was made up or not.
