I'd ask over on hvac-talk. It seems like you ought to be able to set 0360 where you want to without having to call the system something it isn't. I'm just not sure if some other setting or the auto discover is causing a problem.

FWIW, I saw your discussion at greenbuildingtalk, and I think it shouldn't be a big deal to get the aux heat set up with 2 stages.

Thanks thull. Did you see today's post on greenbuildingtalk? We did get the stat set for 2 stages on the compressor and Aux Heat for 2 stages, even though the wiring turned out to be a bit funky and I found we've got a second breaker to deal with. So short of buying the IAQ control (EIM?) and changing to a single zone, I think the only thing left we can try is to get 0360 set to some temp rather than not set at all.

0342 is still set for outside temp sensor, and I thought that was the only requirement for lockouts. And the manual clearly states that these two settings are for HP with electric backup. Honeywell tech assistance was any help - but maybe I'll call back tomorrow and get a different tech who will know what's going on. In the meantime, I'll post on hvac-talk.

I'm clueless on the zoning issue. And I'm not sure what you mean by "buying the IAQ control (EIM?)." My understanding of the IAQ stat is that it won't work without the EIM- the stat only has 3-wires to the EIM and then it splits out from there. So, those two are talking on a proprietary protocol that's probably like RS232. There aren't any of the open/closed contacts (switches) that actually run the equipment until you go from the EIM to the equipment.

The only other thing I can think of is that the stat may have learned to behave kinda funky b/c you had breakers off at various times while in heat mode. It seems like the smart stat would get confused by having to call the 2nd aux stage all the time.

I've said it before, but I'll reiterate. Even though you can get the staging how you want to optimize aux heat use, at some level, if the house needs heat, it needs heat. I think others on GBT mentioned that your overall bill wasn't that bad.

I'd be tempted to figure out how to reset the stat and start over. You know the settings, but that might help with how the stat calls for heat when the weather gets cool again. And maybe manually setting the # of stages (instead of auto discover) would allow you to set the aux heat lockout.

FWIW, whoever told you on GBT that the IAQ stat was only $20 more than a non-programmable stat was full of hooey. That's the Rolls of stats.

I only found the GBT thread via Google while looking to see if anyone else had problems getting the aux lockout to work. I don't participate there.

Finally, I'd try to find someone very technical in Honeywell's customer support system. Ask to bypass to the supervisor or design group at the first stumble from the call center.

Thanks - the EIM was a guess on my part b/c the tech who was here yesterday said we'd need another part in order to convert our 2-zoned system to a single zone (or zoneless? Which seems to allow lockouts - I took the upstairs zone 2 stat off the wall and set the master stat 0110 to 0 instead of 1 this AM and it retained the settings. But DH wants 2 zones).

beenthere on hvac-talk asked about the zone controller (it's a W8835A) and hinted that there was something the installer missed on page 8 of some manual. I can't find anything on page 8 of the IAQ manual so I think he's referring to W8835 manual. Can't give more specifics there since no DIY, can you confirm I should have installer look at page 8 of W8835 manual? Maybe a jumper or a DIP setting? I don't think BT was referring to IAQ manual b/c we went through every setting yesterday (tech was here 2 hrs) and nothing worked, but when I changed it to a single stat and unzoned it worked this AM.

I know our bills aren't horrible, but just trying to get this working most efficiently - starting with proper setup, then I'll mess around with setbacks (or not to setback, that is the question LOL). I don't think we're going to do anything about the 5kW final stage being used as a first stage - continue to run that way as tech recommended since I don't want 10kW first stage coming on all the time. I'd love to have 5kW 1st stage and then 10kW (he mentioned 5 and 5, almost like 3 stages, but set 0176 for 2 stage) if needed, but e didn't seem interested in changing the staging wiring, so what can I do? I'm not going to mess with it myself and void the warranty. So best I can do is try to affect the "staging" by having breaker for 10kW stage off until it's really cold. Thanks

Dip switches would be my guess. The manual is in the link below.

Possibly something with the discovering settings in item 6 on page 8. I'd be interested to see if the wiring looks like Fig 7 or Fig 8 on page 7.
