QVC today - Overdose on holiday decorations.

Flipping through the TV channels this morning I discovered QVC has 24 hours of holiday decorations. At the moment they're selling Luminara- which reminds me I need to call the window washers.

I'm not even ready for Halloween and all I do is decorate the front porch. I just started weeding out the summer annuals and cutting down the foliage on the peonies, daylilies and the vegetables.

LOL! I'm right there with you. My wonderful Maximilian Sunflowers are all in bloom, the temps now are around 70-degrees during the day and 40 overnight, and our beautiful International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta and huge Fall art show are in full swing. This is my time to enjoy our glorious Autumn. I can NOT even begin to wrap my brain around buying, let alone looking at, anything Christmasy! In fact, today is my day to put up my Autumn decorations. Fun!

I'm on the flip side because I enjoy looking at Christmas decor all year long. Thinking about Christmas and all it entails is my happy thoughts subject.

LOL, Luvs, I've been doing the same thing! I had a major meltdown on Sunday when I'd planned to decorate. Was depressed and couldn't stop crying, guess Dad's services the day before made it so 'final' he's gone and it hit me. So yesterday, I went thru our Easter inspiration album and that picked me up and got me interested. Then I looked at my own albums to see what I did last year and the year before. BIG mistake. LOL. Most of it looked pretty pathetic to me and I started to get down again. But I hauled some of my stuff out and put it in middle of table, which forced me to decorate!!! Things were going good, I thought. Then this morning I looked at what I'd done (with only about 1/3rd of my decos so far) and hated half of it. So I started moving stuff and putting away some again. Arrrgggh. I've got two pantry shelves FULL of things to unpack and I honestly don't know what the heck I'm doing! Seems I not only had my holiday decorating spirit missing so far this year, I have lost confidence in myself to do it nicely. I don't know what is going on but I wish it would "go away" instead. I'll get more stuff out and on the table and see where it leads today tho. sigh. Kathleen, I really hate how awful your weather has been. I wish I could wave a magic wand and send you ours from the past week. However now we are going in the opposite direction from you...Spring here is backing off and this week will be downright HOT. Mid 90s. That's not a good sign in March, summer will be terrible for sure. Hopefully our Spring will come back next week, I'm not ready for our good weather to end yet. hugs, Karen

I think Kat may be right about the regions affecting color choices. As for me, I love burgandy but not red, and no pink (if I was single, yes, but wouldn't ask DH to put up with it). I've decorated with purple (a very grey purple)that was beautiful, and I love, love, love peach but don't have any in my home because I remember people making fun of the peachy 80's. I also love grey in other people's houses, and even thought of painting my MB in grey, but decided against it because I'm just not sure I could live with it. I'm trying a blue/green (mostly blue) in my family room right now, and think I'm going to have to color wash over it with a green - just too blue for the rest of my house. I love navy but tried it once in a room, and never could find the right shade for me. I also think some houses 'talk' to you about what colors to use in them.

Believe it or not there are differences between all three styles of painting but nowadays it's sort of all jumbled together. Traditional Tole or Rosemaling was and still is done with round brushes to create a variety of comma strokes to create your work. The comma stroke is the only brush stroke used in Traditional Tole with some variations of that same stroke and was known for being painted on tin - but was also painted on wood. Tole has become a commonly accepted name of today's painted folk art. Folk art itself is more what defines a specific time or place of where it originated. Decorative painting falls more into the category of using a variety of different strokes, brushes (round, flat, fan, angular, filbert, rake, etc.) and other tools like sponges to create your work. That's what most people are familiar with these days. I agree that www.artistsclub.com is a good place to purchase books. Pat Olson's books are great for beginners as are Priscilla Hauser's books. Both artists are very good with terms and techniques of painting, they have stroke practice sheets, and very easy step-by-step projects. Artists Club has a portion of Hauser's books which usually sell for about $10 at $2.99 and under. Just put her name in their book search. A lot of people enjoy Donna Dewberry's One Stroke method (I use it myself at times) but I think it's worth it to learn the 'old way' of decorative and tole painting and expand on that. I use many styles of painting depending on my current project. Another way to keep up on current trends and techniques in the painting world is to check out some of the magazines available. Quick & Easy Painting, PaintWorks, Painting, and Let's Paint are just a few of the publications that are usually on sale at craft stores. *If you go into the Beginners book section at Artists Club as mentioned you'll find discounted books at very low prices. Don't be afraid to buy books for beginners by artists you don't know or aren't familiar with. All their styles are different and it really adds to the enjoyment of painting. The beauty of that site is that you can browse the book first to see if the artist's style appeals to you. Welcome aboard and have fun!

We have a holiday party every year and in the past, it has been earlier in Dec., but this year it's not until the 12th, which is good because our house is a disaster outside, in the midst of a re-siding project! Usually I do like to put up the outside lights and garland the first weekend of Dec., but that will have to wait until probably the 12th... siding job is supposed to be done by then! Today I had to do something so I bought a wreath and a mantel garland from a nursery. This weekend we'll unpack our new fake tree and decorate it. I would love to have a real one but DS2 is allergic. Every year I seem to eliminate a few decorations because I just get tired of them, but I never get tired of my Santa collection. I have about 20 or so different Santas -- some are figurines, some are made out of wood, one is stuffed, etc. Every year I do something different with them. One year I stuffed them all on the mantel. This year they're all going on the shelves in my kitchen. I find that I appreciate them more when they're all together rather than scattered around the house. Lavender, this will make you feel better. I have a collection of plastic Rudolph toys that I display as if they're fancy decorations. I figure Christmas is my excuse to be as tacky as I want to be!

ItÃ¢ÂÂs only early October! I was just stunned yesterday to see that my next door neighbor, who goes all out for Christmas, had already put up all his outside Christmas strings of lights and they were all twinkling away last night!

The scary thing is that Thanksgiving is very late this year. If you want to avoid the Thanksgiving weekend shopping crowds the next shopping weekend will be December 7th!

Lynn - Every year I look forward to the photos from the Hot Air Balloon festival. The colors are so sharp and clear you'd swear they were Photoshopped. My Mother is from NM and we used to drive there every other summer to visit relatives in Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Clovis and Fort Sumner. We used to swim in the Pecos River - all of 3' deep due to irrigation needs.

My DIL's father lives in Albuquerque and my son and his wife was supposed to go this year during the festival but he had to travel for work.

Fun2 - I love the holiday decorations too but I try to avoid them because I really just don't have room for any more - and it seems that every year I find something else to add to my decorations. Some day we'll downsize and I'll have a terrible time deciding what to keep.

Nanny - my neighbor puts his up in the fall too because the weather is so much nicer but at least he doesn't turn them on until Thanksgiving week.

We had temps in the 80'a through yesterday. I haven't even put the pumpkins on my fence yet. Today I walked into Macy's and the whole place is decorated for Christmas. Give me a break.

I confess....last weekend my mother and I went to Heeney in Atlanta and I bought LOT of new Christmas ribbons. They are too fabulous! Among my new treasures is a five inch cream and black ticking stripe, rolls of silk "Burberry" plaid ( not the real plaid but a dead ringer), an apple green velvet trimmed with red ball fringe on both edges, a rustic five inch brown and cream check, balls of boiled wool yarn in reds and greens, an embroidered white dressy ribbon, and several others. I was in ribbon heaven! Added to the new ornaments I bought in the Czech Republic and Germany, I cannot WAIT for Christmas. I've reserved our guy and two other helpers for the last week in November and am ready to go :-)
