You know, blue wasn't a color I'd use on the walls but always had in accessories until we did our guest room. We painted it SW Hinting Blue and loved it so much we painted our master in it too!!!

I totally avoid red. I know it's popular and a lot of people really enjoy having it especially in dining areas & kitchens, but I think it's too dark or something. Like you with blue, I don't hate it, I just don't use it.

I really dont like anything with peachy-y tones. I like almost every other color. My peach dislike was born about 20 years ago when I wore a peach colored bridesmaid's dress. I have still never fully recovered from the trauma.

I like pinks for little girls rooms, but today when I was working on something, I saw this 7,000 sf multi million dollar Tudor that was built in 1920 something. The entire decor inside was pink! I thought it was joke, but no, it wasn't. I'll have to try to find that and post it, I bet some of the people in here would get a kick out of it.

You're so right about the purples too! For some reason it just looks out of place when I see a room that has purple walls.

I always say purple is my favorite color. If I want to buy a sweater and it comes in purple that's the color I'll choose. But, I've never used purple in my house, except for a bath towel I bought recently and I love that towel. Maybe I should be decorating with purple...

Mustardy tones. I don't think the light around here is good for them, and they make my skin look bad.

lukkiirish, I'm with you--don't care for red. I don't have it in anything that decorates my home or anything I wear. I never even bought my kids red clothes; I just do not like it very much.

In fact a few years ago I jettisoned all the trad red/green holiday decorations I had accumulated, once I realized that I didn't care for them either. Switched to what I love-silver/white-and never looked back.

Another no-go for pink and purples. I have some upholstered pieces in the living room with touches of these colors and I've never been able to spend much time in there without glaring at them. LOL! Such a shame, not to mention a waste of money.

I don't like orange at all. I've owned a couple of orange t-shirts, got compliments, but still don't like orange. I don't like purple in decorating. And while I don't care even for orange flowers, I do like purple flowers.

I have a few small accessories that are purple, but otherwise no pink or purple in my house.

When I was buying a house, one that I viewed was in perfect condition and beautifully decorated, except that every room was either pink or lavender. I might have bought it anyway, if the dining room hadn't been too small for my furniture.

That house ended up in foreclosure - the only foreclosure in my town in the past two years.

I have no use for grey.

No primary colors.
No dark colors without a generous mitigating dose of cream/white.
I like the neutral values of all colors...the softened, grayed down, complicated shades.
I don't use pink/purple in my house because I am fair, with yellow undertones in my skin, and those colors make me look jaundiced...

Oh yes purple is ghastly in a home unless you are five or ten.

Primaries, hunter green, navy blue, pink.

I don't care for neons of any color.

Geesh, didn't realize so many people disliked pink- that's ok more for me :) I love it. I'm getting ready to paint my lawn mower pink- no joke. Lots of pink and purple in the landscaping. The interior is in the process of resembling pastel dinner mints.

Earth tones. I would never wear these colors so don't care to decorate with them either. They are a bit depressing to me. They look great on some people and I have seen beautiful rooms around these colors - but not for me.

No purple in my decorating either. I do have some accents of pink though. It's my favorite color, but I have to think of the man of the house too. LOL I indulged my love of pink as accents in the sunroom.

My favorite decorating color is yellow - in all shades, tints, and tones. It reminds me of sunshine and happiness. I don't like peach but I do like coral. Neutrals bore me, except for the crisp contrast of pure white or black against color. No pink or purples anywhere. I like blues for bedrooms and bathrooms, but I'd never use blue in living areas.

I'm funny about colors.

I could say I don't like pink and purple, but then I've seen a specific example that I've loved. Funcolors posted an aubergine that was to die for! Then, there was a decorating show that did a girls room in a warm pink that was lovely.

I've come to the conclusion (maybe from being a gardener) that there's not a color I don't like, but, perhaps, a range within that I don't appreciate as much.

Love greens and reds, dislike hunter and burgundy.

I'm not a big pink or purple fan either. Although I've used both in the girls rooms before, their rooms, their color choices. I've seen rooms decorated beautifully with both colors and have appreciated them, they just don't feel right in my home. I also love neutrals, but they don't look right in this house .. I think it's the low natural light in certain areas of the house. I've tried some beautiful colors that I've seen displayed here, they're so pretty in the pictures .. when I get them on the walls here, they look awful. My neutral is white, then I play off of it with brighter colors .. the white to me helps keep it all grounded.

I love red, there is a little clear red in everything I have .. whether it be in my home or clothing. :)

I love gold but can't handle yellow. Not a fan of peachy or coral. I only like ornage if it's more it's more brown/burnt/"spice" looking. Anything really bright or neon.

This is a great thread and it really got me thinking, do you think this is a regional thing as well? I used to be a childrens clothing rep and my territory ran from SC to NJ and there were huge regional differences. South of Baltimore you could sell bright colors and the bigger the bows the better, once you hit northern MD it was all about more pastel colors or more muted colors anyway and the bows had to be much smaller and more sparkly. It was that way with the clothing as well if it has grosgrain they loved it down south, but if it was satin they loved it up north...so funny the differences! Even the store owners and buyers could be spotted a mile away (with a few exceptions of course). The northern store owners all wore black or gray while the southerners wore bright colors.

I really had to think of a color I don't like and I decided I couldn't come up with one except for maybe really blah shades of brown, because I love chocolate brown in combo with certain other colors. My hubby is from the midwest and they just love their browns it seems and many of his family and friends homes are decorated in muted tones like hunter green and burgundy, nothing too bright. Many of the southerners I know have fire engine red dining rooms and a few friends in California have funky purple and orange decors. The girl who cuts my hair isn't from California but she has a purple front door and purple Adirondack chairs on the front porch. Her home is filled with gold, black and purple, including walls and it works because it's "her!"

So I wonder if it's a regional thing where we grow up with certain colors, in decorating, in the landscape and in clothing, so we gravitate towards them as we decorate our own homes? I've noticed a big push in orange in the magazines lately, yet no one here seems to LOVE orange even though it's being pushed right now, so this is really interesting to me. Certainly the further south you go, like into the Caribbean the color palette changes even more.

I would never have even thought to paint my door purple, but then I can only imagine what my mother or neighbors would have said if I had, so maybe I'm just a big color chicken?! ;-) Nah, I just know I couldn't pull off a purple door, because I'd be to worried about what Christmas wreath I would use LOL!

As a little girl, my parents painted my bedroom pale blue, so I never had pink.

In my current house, which is a rental so I can't change the colors, I have a Wedgewood blue living room, a burnt orange dining room, yellow kitchen, navy blue hallway, apple green study and pale creamy yellow bedroom. Not the colors I would have chosen, but, with the exception of the living room, most of them seem to work. The living room gets little direct sunlight and the blue just seems cold and gray.

Speak for yourself! I still very much miss the purple (BM Wet Concrete walls, some eggplant upholstery, paintings with various shades of purple) living room I had in my last house. A frequent comment was "you know, I normally hate purple but I really like this room!" That house had dreary pale-sage vinyl siding we could do nothing about so we painted the door not just purple but PURPLE!!!!!! and loads of purple, white, and yellow flowers in the front yard (Oh, and lesmis, a mixed-greenery holiday wreath with a white bow looked wonderful on the purple door.) And I am a h*ll of a lot older than ten. :-)

Two colors I won't have in any quantity in my home are red and orange. Red makes me antsy and grumpy - the ubiquitous red dining room is not the least bit conducive to either good digestion or interesting dinner conversation to me, and I shall be heartily glad when the fad goes the way of the dodo. Although the whole "soothing" thing some people are really into with their homes bores me in my own home, orange is just a little TOO energetic.

Neutrals don't exactly knock my socks off, they are just dandy for other people but I'd be perfectly content never again having anything in the cream-beige-tan-taupe genre in my home, and no insult intended to those who love the color but even five years ago I could have happily gone the rest of my natural life without every having seen Silver Sage again. :-)

Bradbury & Bradbury has a stunning pink color (Ashes of Rose) in their Morris Tradition wallpaper line that I would kill to use in my living room. I just can't afford almost a grand in wallpaper. Even DH approves (of the color, not the price).

Red and pink. I don't wear them and I don't like them on my walls or in my decor. Not never, but about the only place you will find red is in some rugs i have, Hard to find them without red. I LOVED a red room I saw on GW - I think it was SharonG in FL. (not sure what happened to her) I still wouldnt want it in my house though.

Took me a year to figure out what I wanted to do in my current house after I moved in and I hated all the rooms. The kitchen, powder room and foyer had red and cream tile and the family room had red carpet and a red accent wall. YUCK. I am so happy we have wood floors now and painted over that accent wall.

I think the PO was color blind, the MB was hunter green carpet and a yucky orange on the walls, not a nice one which I might have liked. I was not sorry to see that carpet and wall color go either!

johnmari, when I think of successful rooms in purple I think of yours :) and some I've seen on AT where it's mixed with gray with lots of sun coming in the room.

I couldn't conceive of orange for the longest time (my childhood trauma story) but now in little doses it looks great against the foggier colors we have in the house. *Little* doses.

Blue is IMO the hardest color to decorate with but done correctly it can be exceptional. Guess that's true with all colors, isn't it?

I'm not wild about decorating w/ blue. I've tried many times and have never felt comfortable w/ it. Even whenit is described as a warm color I still feel cold in a blue rm. I have been able to work / it in accessories though and feel good.

I've also tried red w/ no success no matter how much I tried and anted it to work.

And then there is yellow - I've found wonderful complimentary colors but no go - even in accessories.

Blue and Grey - hands down. I don't have one stitch of either color in my house. They are too cold and despressing of colors (in my opinion that is)>

Boy my answer would have been much shorter, if you would of asked what colors do you like to decorate in. There are alot of colors that I don't like to decorate in, Red, Pink, Blues, Peach, Aqua, Gray, Brown.

I agree with Artlover. Yellow is a great sunny color.

Orange! I only like it in juice, and in very small doses of intense color on ceramics. A complex salmon or coral is fabulous though, so the whole family isn't off limits.

IMO, you have to be careful with pink if you're over 16. Too much pink can be ghastly, but little bits here and there are so lovely.

Same with purple. If it's done well (Like Johnmari's), it's beautiful. But too bright a purple makes me want to flurp!

And the whole range of mustard to camel to caramel -- SOOOO not for me.

I think Kat may be right about the regions affecting color choices. As for me, I love burgandy but not red, and no pink (if I was single, yes, but wouldn't ask DH to put up with it). I've decorated with purple (a very grey purple)that was beautiful, and I love, love, love peach but don't have any in my home because I remember people making fun of the peachy 80's. I also love grey in other people's houses, and even thought of painting my MB in grey, but decided against it because I'm just not sure I could live with it.
I'm trying a blue/green (mostly blue) in my family room right now, and think I'm going to have to color wash over it with a green - just too blue for the rest of my house. I love navy but tried it once in a room, and never could find the right shade for me.
I also think some houses 'talk' to you about what colors to use in them.

I said I didn't like purble but check this room out, woo la la. I could change over real quick.

Well, there are colors which I tend to use - greens, black, rusty reds/oranges, cafe au lait. I have blue rooms, but those are the boys' choices for their rooms. I like blue, but not so much for decorating here, although some of the deeper navy tones are tempting. I could see pinks, tho likely pale, and could do yellow if it leaned toward a mustard. Purple as accents, sure.

The one color I really don't have except in the downstairs Star Trek bathroom is white. Probably some deep psychological reasons in part, since it is practically the only color my mom uses in her homes. =-) I just don't care for it for decor, for appliances, for cars. Cream, ivory, silk white maybe. But white? Not me.

For me it's White... true white for me is not a color but the absence of color. I need color - can't imagine having a white (or white-ish or beige-y) room. Life is too short.

Now see, I am just the opposite of lynn r ct I love white. When I think of white I think of glamour as in Jean Harlow. I love white sofa's (leather chesterfields) thirsty white towels, white winter boots, a killer white leather bag, white distressed tables, white washed brick, white sea shells. But I don't like a pure white wall it is boring and life is too short for that. But I love the trim to be painted white it looks so clean and fresh and pretty.

Couldn't agree with you more Jane. I love the furniture and the accessories and definately the trim to be white but white walls get to me because there are a million colors I like and I want to try them all.
