Trane compressor failed

I have a Trane Elite Super Efficiency Weathertron Heat Pump

(model# BWR736E100A0, installed in July 1986) and the compressor failed (that's been confirmed by two different repair techs).

Heating BTUH 34400

EER/SEER 8.65/10.00

Compressor - Climatuff

1 speed

I am currently budgeting to upgrade the whole sytem, both the heat pump and the air handler, to a new higher SEER system. However, summer is upon us in Texas and I need an economical "band aid" to get me through this year so that I can replace everything next year.

Any suggestions as to econimical replacement parts, compatible third party parts or used equipment would be appreciated as I am considering buying a used heat pump from someone else that is upgrading their system, but I am not sure what would be compatible.

Does it have to be a Trane unit or are there other heat pumps identically manufactured and sold under another name?

How about installing a couple of window units to get you through the emergency. Depending on circuit size, you could install 12,000 btu units. Just don't run the vacuum cleaner while the units are running.

Just a thought. This was my emergency plan if my 21 year old Trane heat pump failed during the summer.

Your Trane unit is a 3-ton (the 36 in the model# means 3-ton) so it is not a very large unit. The window shakers just might suffice - one in the bedroom and one in the living room. How large is the house? Your old heat pump should have back-up electric resistance heat for the winter so you are covered for winter needs already.

I'll try to give my input where I can with your questions. I like the 2-compressor, 2-stage system because it is 50% capacity on low stage, so longer run times which means better comfort. I think your pricing is great on this equipment. Only thing that concerns me is potentially having to change out two compressors (which I probably wouldn't even bother doing) should one go bad and contaminate the system (which is the worst case scenario). Single compressor dual stage systems usually run around 80% capacity, give or take, on low stage, so less advantage with humidity control. So, as your quotes stand now, I like the American Standard option. The 2-stage unit will be nice to have for the main house, since you won't always need 5 tons. While generally I wouldn't recommend a 2-stage unit for just a master bedroom, they are really the same price before extended warranties are factored in. Since many extended warranties per system run $700 each, I think $1000 is reasonable for both to protect you from any failures. I'm not sure how reliable the components are--I haven't read anything terrible about them to date--but you would potentially have the extended warranty to eliminate that fear. And I wouldn't expect much more than 11-14 years out of a system built to today's standards, especially if you live near the coast and/or the system's is built around improperly sized/designed ductwork.

Years ago I saw a study on Copeland, Tecumseh and Bristol compressors. I've never seen one including the Trane compressor. Trane's claim, for what it's worth, is that since they build their own compressor they perform the quality control checks. Therefore, more compressors are caught before ever leaving the factory. All other OEM's must rely on Copeland, take a compressor out of a box (so to speak) and put it in their unit. Trane will have a new 2-step scroll coming out very soon in their 5 ton XB14 model to take advantage of the tax credit.

Compressor failing, or just bad recirc valve?

The tech said "It's not the recirc valve since I can manually switch it from one side to the other without a problem". I'm assuming he was shorting the relay to force it in one direction or the other, but that hardly proves the valve isn't a problem, it only proves that he can get it to move back and forth... if the solenoid is flaky, it may work just fine once it has become "unstuck". but once it "sticks" in one direction or another, it may take multiple attempts to get it unstuck. Does anyone know if the recirc valve changes direction with a momentary signal, or if the solenoid has to be energized continually to be held in one direction? If it's the latter, what direction (heat or cool) is it typically in when not energized? If it requires constant signal (power on solenoid coil) for cooling, that would explain why a loss of power to the system often means a lack of cooling upon return of power... the valve returns to "heat" mode when it loses power, and getting power back doesn't guarantee a sticky valve will return to "cool" mode. Just trying to understand potential failure modes here...

This has been a fun thread to read.. gives me a feeling of what it must be like to sit around and watch soap operas. But on a serious note there are no facts in any of the links. I have seen nothing but alliance compressors in the trane units lately. Even checked some of the units on the floor made in the last few weeks, (some of which are on that list.) All say made in USA alliance compressor. So I don't know. Then again we have to trust the sticker I guess. The sad part of all of this is the copeland compressor (which is a great compressor and also part of the alliance group) will probably be made in china soon. It business. If its cheaper or someone comes up with the money it will be sold out to whoever. Not the way I like it but true. So brand loyalty is really a suckers game for which we Americans fall victim to.You ever looked to see where all those components in a American car come from? Don't I don't want you having to walk to work. A lot of components inside all brands are made by the same people. Manufacturers just put them together. In the mean time I will be on the lookout for these chinese compressors. They will be coming to a air conditioner near you..................

Go for it. It does not have to be a Trane. The used heat pump will probably work. You are subject to have a mis-matched system. But it will probably cool your house. Just do not pay to much.

For all practical purposes, the used system should be a gift.

Thankyou for the advise so far. Unfortunately I have not come across a freebie, yet. I've seen a couple of 10 year old 4 and 5 ton units for about $350 - $400, but I'm sure the larger units would be too large for the interior air handler.

The house is a two story, 2400 sq ft. Thankfully the upstairs unit is running strong. However, we bought the house two years ago and I have never felt that the downstairs unit was able to keep up with the Texas heat. I'm wondering if/when I do the whole system I should increase the tonnage too.

What are the rules of thumb on that?
