Miele 4840 vs. 4800

Hi! We've almost decided to go with the Miele (though I'm still hyperventilating about the price, even with the current $500 discount). Now we're debating the 4840 vs. the 4800.

The 4840 has extra features that seem nice, but are they possibly worth an extra $500? The delay obviously can't be faked on the 4800, but can the extra programs on the 4840 be duplicated in Custom mode on the 4800? Is there any way to get an extra rinse or spin on the 4800?

Advice would be appreciated!

Would be nice if Custom was programmable to the nth degree, but it's not. Rather it's a somewhat more flexible version of Normal. Really I think it's intended to be used in place of Normal -- Normal is crippled because the heater is disabled (to get good energy consumption numbers), while Custom does use the heater to assure the desired wash temperature.

I wouldn't want to be without the Comforter program. Wouldn't want to be without Drain & Spin either. Recently most of my Drain & Spin usage is in conjunction with Comforter, for two reasons: 1) Comforter only goes up to High Spin, so I'll do a Drain & Spin at Max Spin afterward, since as you know comforters are a pain to dry; 2) I have one particular comforter (white-encased down alternative from Kohl's) which takes two tries to spin properly, apparently because the fabric doesn't let the water drain out quickly enough. Also, Drain & Spin is useful for the very occasional non-comforter load which, say, only gets up to Medium Spin the first time because of unbalanced heavy items.

Have only had to use Quick Rinse a couple of times, but it's good to know it's there.

Theoretically the W4840 could be updated to add new programs and features, but I have no idea if Miele has any plans to do so.

I purchased a 4840 yesterday over the 4800 after calling Miele up ? they are great help on the phone to answer things including all the timings of the cycles etc....

seems what he(miele guy on phone) called the momentum or the amount the drum agitates is different in settings

where the comforter setting is more like a delicate setting the momentum and water fill level he said would be different than the normal delicate ?

also to me the shorter settings might be handy

the beach towel setting meant to beat sand out of towels and not wash them (follow up with a wash) sounded good for me since we do a lot of camping etc.. and have really dirty sandy clothing that might benefit

Heated or not heated prewash ? that's the question ;) The misundersanding is all inside the word "COLD" that is ambiguously used by Miele Chech all the tempeature settings in the W48XX : No heat = tap cold - cold fill only IMHO (but not only mine) prewash has to have a drain before the main wash (that will be carried with fresh water), otherwise it would be just a extended main wash. COLD = 30Â°C = 85Â°F ("almost warm" were less misunderstanding) Warm = 40Â°C = 105Â°F Very warm = 50Â°C = 120Â°F Hot = 60Â°C = 140Â°F Sanitize = 70Â°C = 160Â°F So the heater in the prewash engages or doesn't depending on the target temp AND on hot water line actual temp.

mieleforme, that seems like way more changes than Miele Canada had told me. I spoke with someone specifically about the new models and she told me most of the changes were minor. I was on the fence about waiting for the new units or just getting the W4842/T9822. I've linked my previous thread about this. This is what they told me: Functionally speaking not much is changing. These new IntelliQ units will replace the current W4XXX/T9XXX ones. The two main changes are: 1. The machine will self dose liquid detergent. It has a separate container you can place anywhere around the machine. The machine senses your load size and you tell it the soil level and it does the rest. This feature means nothing to me as I change detergent so often I wouldn't use it. 2. They are adding an additional washing cycle for "sports gear". They told me you could probably achieve similar results using the hand wash cycle on the W4842. I don't wash hockey gear so also not important to me. The other changes are all mainly aesthetic. The door will be chrome; the control panel will be black with silver buttons. Some cycle names are changing but will function exactly the same as the current W4XXX/T9XXX models. For example, "Heavy Soil" is now going back to "Prewash" (can I hear an "amen" from all you Miele owners). The 45 min warm will be called "45 min dry" / the 20 min cold will be called "fluff". jsfox, I've only had my pair since early February but so far no issues. They wash and rinse really well. The dryer takes a little adjusting too but I really like it. I use Normal Gentle for most loads and things come out slightly damp (which I know is better for fabrics). Do you need the honey comb drum? My much-older Mieles don't have one and I've never found the clothes were wearing too fast. (BTW, the honeycomb drum is reportedly also - or mostly, no one is sure - a design improvement to improve and/or lower costs in the manufacturing process. It seems to have acquired some consumer "benefit", ex post facto.) However one thing to consider about the older 1000 series: they may run on only on 220V (my 1918 does). I think the two you're considering run on regular juice. That difference has its own pros and cons. And some of the more recent 1000's had a limited set of cycle/temp/spin options, unlike the older ones like mine. The new 4K machines seem to have overcome that, especially if you're willing to go into their brains and liven them up a bit. (See other threads for instructions.) Molly~

suburbanmd, The timing that is displayed on a custom cycle is more a general guideline as indicated from the owners manual p.24 states: 8. Start the program Press the flashing "Start" button. If a delay start is set, the remaining times elapses in the display. Once the delayed start time has elapsed or immediately after the program starts, the approximate program running time is displayed. The washer calculates the water absorbency of the laundry in the first 8 minutes. The overall program time may be shortened or lengthened. Additionally the sequence cycle is displayed. The washer shows the current program step. The drum door will be locked and the drum light will turn off once the program starts. Unless Miele is documenting and including in their unit database your machine's serial number includes the new firmware then the only means of determining whether your machine has the latest firmware is through the physical attachment of a laptop with Miele's proprietary software communicating between the two. After a Miele tech has actually connected to your machine then corporate's database is updated with information via Wi-Fi in real time. My machine's firmware had the "Hygiene Info" switched to the "on" position to display the machine should be run on a Sanitize cycle if too many cold water washes have been executed. Our machine's door latch that was originally perfectly spaced and starting to hit the latch roller was adjusted. I have another thesis on the sagging door matters of both the dryer and washer might, given the time, post a thread regarding my findings. bmac, I agree with you that although minor, issues that should be resolved, yet remain issues are unacceptable. Dealing with Miele US Corporate is fruitless other than getting them to actually schedule a tech to service your units. Unless the person you are speaking with has field experience, or they are in front of your machines, then they are useless. Now a great tech...that's a different story; we have been fortunate.

The price difference between the two in the U.S. is only $200. Not sure where you're getting $500. But the extra features of the W4840 seem definitely worth the money if you plan on using them.

Cyberspacer, the $500 difference is in Canada.

Michelle, I just purchased the 4840 in December. I was set to go for the 4800 but was trying to think ahead. If electricity rates become variable in Canada (i.e. lower rates for night-time use), then the wash delay will come in handy.

The main reason I purchased the 4840 was for the "countdown timer" so I know how much longer the wash cycle will be, and the "quick wash" cycle. From what I understood, the 4800 does not have "quick wash" or "rinse & spin" option.

As far as the custom options go, if you go to Miele.ca and download the user manual for the 4840, it will show you the settings it uses for the custom options and therefore it should be easy enough to duplicate with the 4800.

I am very happy with the 4840 but $500 buys a lot of detergent :-)
