The Kitchen Table

My 96 year old aunt passed away

Aunt Sallie was the real character of the family. She was a tall, flamboyant redhead. When she and Uncle Jim came to visit, we didn't find out until bedtime that it was for several days. And you'd better hide the scotch! DH and I are going to her graveside service tomorrow, and I'll get to visit cousins I haven't seen in many yers. Everyone in the family has an "Aunt Sallie story."

I'm so sorry. I was thinking last night about my Grandmother. We were very close. She passed away in 1976. If she was alive today,she would be 99. I still miss her.

I am sorry for your loss. Alzheimer's is a cruel disease. My Mom didn't become agressive but she did lose her sense of modesty and my Mom was such a modest person. My Mom also lost her ability to speak except for the odd song lyric when I would sing to her and to say goodnight to a picture of George Clooney on her mirror. My Mom though did speak volumes with her dark eyes. Your uncle is at peace now but I am sure the loss to your family is great. Anne

How fortunate you are, and thankful you can be, that your family has been so close, for the people in many families have nursed their grievances with the result that get-togethers are only partly pleasant ... and I know that you are not thinking about such things at the moment. Now you can help your brother find his way through this, and he you. I hope that you can find enough greater pleasure in remembering times with your mother than the pain associated with them that sharing them can help ease the pain for both of you. Perhaps in the coming days you may find that others have cherished memories of your mother that you've not been aware of, which will help you be more thankful for her life and the influence that she had on others, as well. One of the most effective ways that we can show our respect and appreciation for the good things that were in the lifestyle of others is to go out and do similar things as we carry on our lives, altered somewhat as indicated to fit into our way of living. I'm sorry Eva. Bet your family does have some good stories to share. She sounds a little like my Aunt Allilee who lived to be almost 90. She loved to go dancing, clear up into her 80's. She never turned down a cocktail either.

She sounds like a great gal. At 96, it doesn't sound like the scotch hurt her health. RIP Aunt Sallie.

My deepest sympathies, Eva.
My great Aunt marion is still living. She was 97 in October. She lives by herself out in the country in a 3 story house. The only bathroom is upstairs, the washer and dryer are in the basement. She still mows her own lawn every week all Summer. Her drivers license expired with her birthday last year but, she passed the eye exam and it was renewed for another 4 years. Her mind is as sharp as ever and she's not shy about sharing her opinion. She's a real pistol and I hope I can age as well as she has.

Aww...I'm sorry for your (and the world's!) loss, Eva. I would say RIP, Aunt Sallie, but I bet she'd be bored! LOL

I would have loved to have met your aunt. She sounds like some of mine.

Oh, Eva, I am so sorry to hear this. I lost my 95 yr. old cousin in the summer and she sounds like your aunt. She was so much fun and so wise and smart and I miss her every day. Thank goodness they both had long lives! I'll think about you tomorrow. God bless.
