Maytag Epic (9700) vs Whirlpool Duet (9400)

We have narrowed the washer purchase down to the Epic and Duet.

I've read a few posts on the Duet and for the most part pretty positive. I can't find anything on the Epic though. On spec they seem to be the same (I know Maytag is now part of Whirlpool). The washer will be on the 2nd floor.

Any input comparing the two is appreciated.

We narrowed our w/d choices to the Maytag Epic, Duet 9400, and the Sears HE5t. We eliminated the Sears model, due to VERY POOR service with our Kenmore appliances in the past. The 9400 seems to have a decent track record. We, too, found very little info on the new Maytag. I think the Epic has only been around for a few months. Our salesperson told us the Maytag has a better/stronger motor than the Duet and also, is better constructed. We decided to steer clear of a new model with no real history as well as a company (Maytag) that has had issues with recent models.I have also had ONE Maytag washer, that I never liked. Our salesperson also showed us several other Maytag models that will be 'pulled' soon for a "makeover". We just didn't want to be part of that. So.......the Whirlpool Duet it is.

I purchased the Maytag Epic in the beginning of December, 2006 and I have been extremely pleased with it. I have no personal experience with the Duet so I canÂt give you any comparisons. I also canÂt say anything about the reliability of the Epic, as I donÂt have it all that long (barely two months).

As far as I know, the Epic is really a rebranded KitchenAid Ensemble and is in no way related to the Maytag Neptunes which had so many problems, and I understand the Ensemble has a good history. I read somewhere that Whirlpool bought both Maytag and KitchenAid and wants to re-establish the Maytag name by putting it on a proven machine (the Epic/formerly Ensemble).

I must say I have the cleanest laundry ever! I even washed some of my husbandÂs work clothes that have been in the closet "forever" because they looked so bad I wouldnÂt give them to him to wear. I thought with stains and soil that old that wouldnÂt come out with my previous washer, it was hopeless. Well, they are now useable once more! Now DH is eager to present me with some challenges (really dirty clothes) and the Epic has not failed me once. It is very difficult to get him interested in something like a washing machine, but he is amazed at this one.

I also find the Epic to be very quiet (my cat loves to sleep on it when itÂs running) and there is barely any vibration. I do have it in the basement on a concrete floor with no pedestal.

There are no signs of mold (it smells fresh and clean and I have a good nose) but I do wipe the gasket dry when IÂm done using it and leave the door open. I also regularly do hot washes and use chlorine bleach occasionally.

It is extremely easy to use, you could say "intuitive". This is my first FL (wanted one "forever" but my old TL was determined to last 14 years before it gave out) and, right now, I wouldnÂt hesitate to buy another. I actually enjoy doing laundry (never thought I would say that) and am always looking for another load of dirty clothes!

I joined gardenweb to post on hvac but the second thing I have been dying to do is post on the Duet washer. Mine replaced an older front loading Maytag Neptune that was great for our clothes but broke down too often. Whirlpool bought Maytag and the Epic is the same as the Duet...we bought the Duet. I hate it. What I mean is...I hate it! I have only had it a few months and should have listened to the reviews I read before I bought it. I read about tangled clothes and snagged towels. I have no problems with clothes being clean. I use HE Tide and a bit of Biz (HE amount) and always Spray & Wash stains because my kids are 6, 9, 10 and quite frankly, are little dirty animals. Main issues: 1. The clothes, especially adult size, but long pants and sleeves on kids too, get tangled around each other--alot. Mine look just like the picture posted already. The saleman told me to jam in every towel or 20 jeans, etc. and push the door closed. I have never done that and can't imagine it. Sometimes it is so tangled, I have to pull about half the ball of clothes out and let them fall all over the floor as I untangle each item. 2. There is so little water that things end up nearly dry. Good, you think--but they are so dry, wrinkles are setting in before you even put them in the dryer and then the dryer really sets in those creases--especially the jeans. I also find some things, especially towels and t-shirts are noticeably less soft. 3. Towels, especially the really good, plush (expensive) ones that you love, come out snagged--alot, big long snags. I am guessing there are burrs or something inside the drum holes or something in there catching the loops. We are building a new house and this machine will not be coming with us because it aggravates me so. Here are some of solutions I came up with to help make laundry less aggravating with this machine. 1. I never pack it too full. I would rather do an extra load than take the extra time to separate the clothes to put in the dryer. I feel they probably get cleaner when there is less to get twisted around each other anyway. 2. To combat wrinkles I never spin on high. I will do normal wash, med spin or I will even go to heavy duty wash so I can access the low spin button. This keeps them wetter. My old Maytag Neptune dryer has a sensor so it runs only until it senses they are dry and works great. I keep a spray bottle of water nearby and spray the jeans and pants legs' creases and smooth out the wrinkles then do a loose fold before I throw them in the dryer. I also shake out the shirts to their normal shape. It takes time but it does help. 3. The towels...well they snag. My only solution so far is to never do a load of strictly towels. Towels alone in a load guarantees snags on some. I try to mix a few towels in my other loads so they have a fighting chance to stay away from the enemy--wherever it is. As for avoiding problems like moldy odor and the such, I try not to leave things in overnight, or throw them in a basket or leave door open if I don't dry things right away and then leave the door open when not in use. My old Neptune had a class action law suit about mold issues, although I never had the problem, so I am precautionary about that. I also wash my cleaning rags once a week or so in just bleach and that may help. Sorry for the long drawn out deal but I have been perturbed about this thing and have never joined a forum to vent. Although reviews I read elsewhere before I bought mention the snagged towels, I don't see it as much in this forum so I think it is not a complete design flaw and something in only some of them. We are under waranty and I also have the extended warranty. Maybe something can be done about that...a new drum or find a screw or something. I will make that call today and see what they say. Good luck to those who choose this washer or if you already have it and have these issues. If anyone would like to recommend a fantastic front loader with no problems, I am all ears. I may look at the LG or Bosch when we move.

charlyinfl: OMG!!! I am an idiot!!! I had no idea. I took the entire front part of the drum off, which included disassembling all the tubes, dispenser, wiring from the motor, etc. The project was a nightmare! If only I had known!?!? Its a good thing I took it apart anyway, there were scrunchies caught in the heater and a literal tool box worth of junk caught in the drain assembly. Next time I will know better. You have to not mind my opinion, I have a Miele. The counter weights are cast iron rather than cement, the outer tank is stainless, the wiring is very heavy duty, the heater is bolted in as opposed to being just held with a rubber gasket, and I have SS baffles, etc... So for me to see the Duet components was a shock. I paid 1800 for my machine, paid 1400 for mom's machine(GHW9460Pl0) and mine is built 10 times better for only $400 more. I certanly hope the machine lasts her for several years, I can't afford to buy her another one!! LOL sb-laund: Yes I can post the sequence which works for *all* full size front loaders *manufactured* by Whirlpool, except for the new Kitchen Aid. 1. Control on 2. Select Rinse\Spin 3. Select Warm\Cold 4. Select Low Spin 5. Select End Signal to Soft(er) 6. Press the Extra Rinse button 4 times in a row within 5 seconds. You will hear 3 or 4 rapid tones, the machine will sense for a few minutes then display the code Ab. At this time you add 1\3 cup of bleach ONLY to the Main Wash compartment with the detergent divider removed. Voila! The machine will run through a really cool cycle where the drum fills with a high water level, and the drum turns very fast, thereby cleaning the seal, outer tub, etc. I saw all the gunk in there when I took mom's machine apart, and trust me, you want to clean it!!! It recommends if doing this for the first time use 1 cup bleach, subequent monthly cleanings, you use 1\3 cup. Hope that does it for you, let me know if it works. Oh I just noticed the above posted link. That should do it!

buehl, Anyone who has cleaned a non-flow through, non-flushing whole house humidifier knows exactly what I'm talking about. Kind of looks like a science fair project gone astray. I know nothing about the Whirlpool (& related brands) implementation. It's possible they addressed this issue but don't know one way or the other. I looked through the service and technical training manuals for the LG steam washer and there doesn't appear to be any flushing of the steam generator. It does have a bleed-off port, but it's only meant to be manually opened if the generator needs replacement (the generator has no serviceable parts). Fans of the LG machine seem to get good results and always point it's top rating by CR. A careful read of the CR article doesn't show one way or the other if they even tested the steam feature. Often if something has a unique feature they will highlight it in a sidebar, but no such info appeared in the article. I believe CR just tests things in pretty vanilla default cycles so it's very likely the steam was never fired up in their testing. An email to CR brought no additional info. Nevertheless, the LG performed well in their tests (most likely without steam) to the extent CR testing has importance to you.

I have an Epic 9700. It worked well for the first 2 1/2 months. After that it started developing problems with the tub assembly wobbling so far out of the accepted range that no matter how light or heavy a load was in it, the tub bounced hard enough during tumbling to hit whatever's in the bottom of the machine. During spin up and spin down, the tub would wobble so much that it was hitting the inner sides of the machine. This has caused the thumps and spring squeaks I refer to in my thread linked below. The squealing noise is caused by the machine struggling to spin up to the correct speed, which it will not do because the wobbling is so severe. The Epic's (and sister machines the Duet's and Kenmore HExt's) dynamic suspension works great - when it is working. But if the slightest thing goes wrong with the structure that supports the dynamic suspension (warping, weak welds, misalignment, etc.), it wobbles all over the place. I have had this 4 month old machine repaired twice for the wobbling. Nothing has fixed the problem. Maytag is giving me a terrible time with replacing my Epic. Hi again,

By the way, if it makes any difference to you, the Epic is made in Germany, while I believe the Duet is made in Mexico. I can't be sure of this and you would have to check the tag inside the door to verify it.

Thanks for your responses. I think we are leaning towards the Maytag - and holding our breath and the same time. It's scary because I just have not heard much about the Maytag except for your post. As for the Duet it seems to be a love or hate experience from the posting I have seen.
I didn't know the Epic was from Germany, but from the specs I have on the Duet is says it's made in Germany.
Again on paper another similarity between the two.

Thanks again for your responses and I hope to hear more from others! (We are not buying until next week).

Remember that the epic is now made by whirlpool(and both are made in Germany). Even though this machine is new, the overall line/style has been in production for quite some time. With that being said you will definitely get a better performance from the Duet though. It retains the Direct Inject wash system which the epics are apparently lacking. The epics do, however, have a bit better construction to them in the since that they have die-cast metal knobs and hinges, along with galvanized side panels on that model. Both have great sound insulation and water effiency. Typicially the epics have a bit better value to them since you can normally find them at a lower cost. Either way you are certain to be happy.

All of these machines come off the same assembly line at the Bauknecht factory in Germany. As for service, in most of the US both Kenmore and Whirlpool (and Maytag and Kitchenaid) use A&E for their service - this is a company jointly owned by Whirlpool and Sears. - DR

First of all... For those who are not aware, Kenmore is made by SEVERAL appliance companies including Frigidare, Lg, Whirlpool, Ge, Amana and Bosch! It is unfair to hold a brand resp. for any old problems. Their are good maunfactures and bad. I am not saying Kenmore is the best but the track history is harder to judge than other brands. The new Epic is a re-worked KitchenAid and is not any more heavy duty than the Duet. ALTHOUGH... is is a better value for what you pay for each. I have sold appliances at Sears for 13 years and am very impressed by the new Epic in comparison to the Duet and HE5t. Great features for less money. I would have no problem selling any of these machines to a customer. As an owner of the older HE3 washer, I love it and it has also gotten great reviews along with the Duet and KitchnAid. Please Note.. The new HE5t and soon to be new Duetht have a new 6 point suspension system designed just for 1st and 2nd floor laundry rooms! The older Duet/HE4t/HE3t/HE3 and Epic do not. They can cause much more vibration than you would like unless on a very stable floor either being made of concrete or tile etc... Stay away from ALL Frigidare made products especially front loaders as the bearing will go in 3-5 years and cost you $500 minimum to replace. New Oasis TL/Cabrio machines are doing great things as well. Be not afraid. As far as the country of origin... All 3.8 cu. ft. machines are made in Germany and the 3.3/3.5 cu. ft. models are made in Mexico. This goes for the Maytag/Kenmore and Whirlpool models.

for what I know, the HE4T are 6-point suspension system, other than the skin care rinse II and the asthetics, more robust hinge and the so called "audio-visual" control display, it's the same robust machine.

The Epic's a great machine, other than slightly less features in comparison models they are a value, do note tho, the machine does not have a delay start option if it means somehting to you unlike almost all frontload washers offers.

I meant the HE4T and same as HE5T except for the minor differences listed, mostly asthetics.
