Carrier Infinity High Humidity Problem

We have a Carrier Infinity System with Infinity Controller installed Dec 2005. Has worked very well until yesterday. After the morning programmed cool down period the fan kicked on high and would not shut off. Even turning to "System Off" and leaving it off for over an hour did not stop the fan. The fan cannot be controlled by the Controller to low, medium, high or auto settings. The tech came and found the humidity to be very high (64%) and said it would be fine if we set the temperature at 78 degrees or below to take the humidity out of the air. We doubted that as we had never had a problem like this before.

The fan has now run constantly for over 24 hours and it is humid in the house (controller shows 66%). Outside humidity is 79%. It is the weekend and am trying to get the AC company to call me back.

Anyone have a similar experience? Since it is so humid outside can a constantly running fan make it more humid inside? Perhaps there is a leak in the ductwork that is bringing the humidity in and the Controller is simply trying to take it out by running constantly? SInce turning to "System Off" does not stop the fan is there a fan switch issue?

Appreciate any feedback.

Are there any error diagnostic messages on your thermostat?
You probably need a better technician to look at your system.
In the mean time, perhaps switching your entire system off at the breaker in the main panel may 'reset' something.

Just another homeowner, but I can tell you that the reason that the humidity is up is from the fan blowing all the time. If the tech knew that the fan was blowing continually, I don't understand his advice. If he did not get told, then his advice is reasonable.

Continuous fan operation always raises humidity in humid climates.

Good luck with getting your problem fixed quickly. I live in Houston and can sympathize - a lot.

1.I would want to see a load calculation in writing for each zone. I question the sizing especially on the furnaces. 2. Keep in mind basements at or even partially below grade have a very low heating and cooling load 3.assuming you have no installation issues with outside venting, I would get a price on Carrier's 58MVC high eff furnace for the main floor/basement zone. 4.as far as heat pumps, you would need an analysis of your electric and at gas rates. 5. If you have humidity issues in the basement, you need to address the issue of why before trying to solve with dehumidifiers. 6. Dealer should address your temperature issue with the master bedroom with insulation check and ductwork size check. I will assume room is the opposite in the winter heating season. Windows are high quality? 7. I always prefer new and correctly sized refrigerant linesets. IMO

Hi Tigerdunes: Thank you for your feedback. I live in North New Jersey. We heat both floors of our house using steam radiators (from a separate boiler in the basement). We also have a separate AC zone for our larger first floor. This system is for our second floor only. I think that our installer has sized us correctly for our (smaller) upstairs zone as I received several estimates and virtually all the bids included the same system (or Comfort systems). Your feedback helps as our installer shared that he thought that I was wasting money by even getting a Performance system, but I wanted to have some humidity control and a VS system. One follow-up question: I think that this system on his proposal has a single stage with a scroll compressor. Would I notice any difference between this system and a Performance system with 2 stages?

Reading this thread has reaffirmed my decision to upsize the Greenspeed per Carrier's recommendation based on my cooling load. I could have went either way: 3 or 4-ton with my heat load. Too bad they don't make a 3.5 ton, it would have been the perfect size. Last year's polar vortex in NY Long Island really pushed me into the 4-ton. The way I figure the unit will only go into defrost mode below 8-10F. I also have 300sqft of window space, three huge doors and a fireplace. No matter how much my thermal envelope is tightened there will still be leakage in this 75 year-old home. My biggest disappointment so far with the 4-ton is it only reduces its speed to 50% vs 40% for the 3 and 5-ton units. The information across the Internet is just plain wrong on that one. We're charting in brand new territory still, so hope I've added somewhat to the pool of information. Otherwise this unit is *way* better than my wildest expectations. The comfortability factor is way better than my single-stage and well worth the additional cost. I'd go even as far as to say perfect. We had a huge heat snap for two days 65% humidity and temps into the upper eighties still at 80F past midnight. I only used $3.15 for the entire day vs. almost $11 for a similar temp period last year. I also credit my new Sunrise windows with lots of the improvement. At full load the system was using approximately 1150W. It only went up to 70% usage for a very brief period at night. More importantly I could easily maintain rock solid 45% humidity at 73F. Not enough data to really extrapolate much else. The system is so quiet my neighbors asked why I hadnÃ¢ÂÂt turned it on yet. :) The real test will be this winter though. I would move up to the Preferred series, whether 80% or 95+% efficiency. And you definitely want an ECM blower motor whether var speed or single speed. As of July of 2019 all newer furnaces (all brands) are made with ECM, It's only if some older models were sitting around in storage somewhere... otherwise there is no choice... the choice is being made for you. The up side is better efficiency, the down side is a motor that typically doesn't last as long as a PSC motor and costs more. the previous homeowner knows: constant fan does mean higher humidity. I think Carrier may have a feature to shut off the blower for a short time after cool cycle to let water drip off the coil but still not the same as running only with the compressor.

But if you can't control said blower, obviously something wrong. Turn the power off to the furnace for a few minutes. Maybe the sucker needs resetting. Rebooting in computer talk.

On the top right corner of the Infinity controller, what is the setting of the fan? The options are low, med, high, auto.

Thanks for all the feedback. The fan is set on "Auto" and moving the setting to Low, Med or High does nothing to it.

Inexplicably at 1:20 PM Saturday the fan shutoff and the system seemed to go back to normal. The AC tech on call wanted to charge $250 an hour to come out late Saturday so we elected to wait until Monday. The system seemed to be ok until 5 PM Sunday night when the fan went back to running on high. Shutting the system to "System Off" did nothing to stop it.

We are going to go to the breaker box at your suggestion and see if shutting it off makes a difference.

Forgot to respond that there have been no diagnostic errors on the Controller panel. The AC Tech also said that he found none in the system.

We shut off the power at the breaker panel and are waiting to see if that "reboot" as suggested is going to do the trick. Thank several of you for making that suggestion...yes, it is a computer and rebooting seems to do wonders for issues on our desktops and laptops!
