Filling in my new calendar

Today I will transfer all the special dates I have marked on my 2008 calendar and put them on my 2009 calendar...birthdays, anniversaries, some medical notes, January appts., etc. (I also keep track of people's ages on their birthdates. I tend to forget how old my kids and grandkids are...and sometimes, me and DH...LOL! Oh, and the years of marriage for all of us.)

Looking through the old calendar is always fun...lots of reminders of what was going on and where we went or where the kids went and we kept the dogs.

Do you keep track like this?

Yes, I do that too. I have one on the refrigerator, and one on my file cabinet here by the computer, and one in my purse. But I need to get 2 new ones. I know I have one here somewhere in the house, but can't seem to find it. So if I go buy a new one, I'll find it.

I do the same, Leslie. I use the calendar as my "diary" throughout the year, then copy dates over to the new one.

I like a combination of fine redwood bark (sold as mulch), home made or bagged compost, and clay cat litter or Napa Aui\to Parts Oil Absorbent (part #8822). You can read more about the mix on the container forum. Roots grow best in the intersection between water and air and a chunkier mix with good water retention encourages healthy root growth and everything else follows from that. I kind of stumbled into the mix of chunky stuff years ago. For years I used chopped garden waste along with compost and clay cat litter, but getting the right mix of garden waste that would last an entire season without completely breaking down was always hit and miss. Then I stumbled on Al's information on the container forum and the redwood bark which is cheap here in California turned out to be a great replacement. I've just started experimenting with the Oil Absorbent in place of cat litter. The peat moss and vermiculite additions are not very useful although they are traditional. The peat moss is hard to wet and doesn't provide for the light, porous mixture that promotes root growth (and is not a sustainable choice, either). The vermiculite breaks down very rapidly so that it provides little value and is quite expensive to boot. Additionally, I dump leaves and clippings between the plants to compost in place and dump kitchen waste into small holes that I make in random spots. My tomatoes grow to about 14-16 feet tall (there's a pergola overhead for support), so I must be doing something right. Here is a link that might be useful: Al's Container Soil

You can't tie a preemergent weed controller to a date on the calendar. There has been a LOT of discussion about this topic over the years. For awhile, recognizing that timing was critically important to the success of the product, there was not much more than lamenting the inability to predict the time. Then one of the gurus suggested using one of Mother Nature's "whispers" to tell. The blooming of the forsythia plant was the time. Well, not everyone has forsythia. My personal refinement on timing is to apply it after the soil temps hit 50 degrees AND a spring rainstorm hits. The soil has to be warm enough and there has to be sufficient, sustained moisture for crabgrass to germinate. I strongly suspect these conditions precede the blooming of the forsythia, but I'm one who does not have that plant to go by. I do have a cherry tree down the road that always blooms in Feb, so I go by that. Then again I don't have a crabgrass problem so I don't use preemergents. If you use the shampoo two times separated by two weeks, you won't need the aerator. Normal soil is soft when wet and hard when dry. But it should soften again when it gets wet. So called, compacted soil, does not soften when wet. The problem that prevents the soil from softening is the lack of an adequate population of beneficial fungi in the soil. Deep watering with a little soap will create the environmental conditions to foster the rapid growth of these microbe helpers. Use only clear shampoo. The cloudy stuff has oils in it that do not help. My personal opinion is that spraying insecticide because you think you might have a problem is not helpful. There is an organic solution to grubs. It is called beneficial nematodes. These little guys bring an insect disease to the grubs and paralyze them. Then they feed on the insects and procreate. I get BN locally but the original source is this place in Colorado. Apply them with a hose-end sprayer. But first, apply about 3/4-inch of water (or a couple days of rainfall). The BN must have a film of water to move on. They cannot move in dry soil. So first get the soil wet, then apply the BN, then finish with another 1/4-inch of water. Milorganite is fine. I never use it because it has more heavy metals in it than alfalfa pellets (rabbit chow) and alfalfa is lower cost. Probably the reason you did not see any greening effect is you were starting with virgin soil. By next June the soil will be depleted enough to see a greening effect as well as the turf becoming more dense. Here is a demonstration photo showing the effect of alfalfa pellets on a zoysia lawn. This apparently is a very effective photo. I have had clerks at the local feed store tell me about more and more people coming in to get alfalfa pellets for their lawn. The alfalfa was applied in May 2011 and the photo taken in June. Organic fertilizers typically don't show results for 3 full weeks. If you are really indifferent about the soil test, then I would go to Logan Labs. You will get a better read on that test. If you search Google for "logan labs, andy, morpheuspa" you will find a place where you can get guru level help for free. They have been reading LL soil tests for many years. Do not add more topsoil unless you need to change the way your yard drains...because topsoil WILL change the way your yard drains. If you don't start with it right up against the house, then water will drain toward the house. If you do not have 4 full inches of foundation visible below the sill plate on your house, then you should be removing topsoil instead of bringing new soil in. The sill plate is the top of your foundation where the ground floor starts. As you can tell, I am not a fan of topsoil. Oh, and it always has weeds in it. When I need "topsoil" to fill a low spot, I get a local product that is 50/50 sand and "compost." What it really is is half sand and half fresh horse dung. That stuff is hotter than a pistol when it's delivered. Weed seeds cook off in such hot conditions for any amount of time. Plus the sand is very easy to deal with, spreads easily with no clods, and takes roots well. Compost is nice if you can get it for free. Use no more than 1 cubic yard per 1,000 square feet of lawn. For gardens you can pile it deep, but lawns will smother underneath compost. I see it in my neighborhood every year. There is one lawn that has not recovered in several years. Another keeps repeating the mistake every other year. Their lawn almost completely recovered from an app last spring before the grass stopped growing last week or so. It is sad to see the huge emphasis on compost by the radio show garden experts. They seem to recommend 2 cubic yards per thousand. That will smother even a bermuda lawn. In my neighborhood compost costs about $75 per yard to have it delivered. That means $75 per 1,000 square feet. Or I can apply alfalfa for about $5 per 1,000 square feet. I get a huge bang for the buck applying the alfalfa and almost nothing from compost. Add that to the agony of spreading compost and the possibility of smothering the lawn, and I just keep away from it. I can apply 15 apps of alfalfa for the cost of compost.

WOW! That is gorgeous!! The amaryllis I have pictured is the only one I have, but I want to get a few more varieties to mix in my daylily bed. H Blossom Peacock is going on my wish list!!! So pretty! (Yes, I noticed mine was less vibrant than earlier in the season too. Less sparkly pollen as well.)

Have too. Started a month ago putting in the kids sports, dance, appointments, my work days, birthdays etc. It's already way to busy but I keep telling myself that will change in 7 or 8 years and all the kids are out of High school. If my calender was misplaced I would be soooo lost.
I have a feeling I'm finally gettig to that part of life where I can't recall how long someone has been married or how old they are anymore. I might have to write in the birthyears, anniversary years, etc,,from now on. Well for my family I can remember but for others I'm starting to forget...

Me too. It is a great memory aid - I look ahead a couple of weeks and then get the appropriate cards in the mail in time for people to receive them for their special day. It certainly helps to keep me organized.

Oh, My, yes...I would be in a pickle if I didn't do this, and I always put in ages on B'days and years married on the anniversaries. Then I "relive" the past past by reading the old calendar, shedding a few tears over some sad things that happened. Getting a few smiles from some of the happy times. Dottie

I used to use paper but now I use the computer. Great reminder programs and a good calendar program keep me on top of things. Especially things like recycling being every other week. And a quick look and I know the day and the date. I don't always wear a watch anymore like I used to have on all the time. Plus I don't have to transfer and risk missing something. So I remember birthdays, anniversaries and miniscule little things like paying bills and taxes! Just have to back up occasionally and all is well.

I've been using my computer for all of this stuff for several years now ... but this year I'm moving back to paper.

Computer hard drive died, and the flash drive I had been using to backup my information also failed. So I lost everything. Addresses, birthdates, everything. Except for the KT Christmas card exchange list, I had to wait and receive cards before I could send any back!

There's nothing like having a paper copy.

I design and print out calendars for this purpose. One goes on the fridge with a magnetic strip and the other on the side of the filing cabinet beside the computer desk. The calendar for 2009 was ready in September so that I could keep track of mine and DH's doctor appointments. Some of those appts. are made a year ahead. On the back of each calendar I add a sheet that has all 12 months on it. I circle the date of an appointment in red on it so that I can see at a glance what I need to avoid when making future appointments without having to page through all 12 months while trying to write and hold the phone at the same time.

I have all my old calendars. And really wish I had written more intelligible in them I just looked at a 1995 one to see when I brought the parking lot cats in to stay with me forever. Mommy is the only one left and couldn't remember how old she was I added a year to howlong I've had her. I recently went back to a 2003 one to see when I replaced the coil in my oven/I too keep track of birthdays etc. I resolve to do a better job of writing this year. I keep a separate one now for when the lawn was mowed and drains cleaned out etc. and computer cleanups. I plan to have four sep ones for 2009

My claender is my lifeline to everything I do or need to do.

I bought myself another Mary Engelbreit calendar this year as a Christmas gift from dh to me. He wants a Ghost Airplane calendar every year. He's used those for a lot of years. Along with my ME calendar I was given another one with pictures of Chicago on it. I'll keep it in the craft room.

I haven't been in a Hallmark store this year, but I was wondering if they had any of those small calendar books they used to have every year. I didn't know if the economy affected them enough to do away with them.

Oh my goodness, I had forgotten about those small calendar books by Hallmark. I so used to look forward to them every year, but haven't seen any since I can't remember when, lol.

Yup, bet the economy was to blame for their disappearance.

I have my purse calendar but we also have the large desk calendar that I put magnets on and it is on the fridge. Every year on New Years day I put all the important phone numbers on the very back inside cover, put hubbies work schedule on, put the garbage/composte pickups on and everyone's birthdays / anniversaries. I have an "ongoing" document in "word" with all the names, dates etc. and I just print it off.

Yes, Leslie I do the same. But I no longer put the ages of people in my calendar, I just use the birth year. That way, I can't forget to change the age one year. :)

Yes, Hallmark had the calender books this year. I would imagine that they are all gone by now. I picked one up a week or so after Thanksgiving. I asked for one of the wallet sized ones that they used to have, but they were all gone then.

I found some of the old Virginia Slim datebooks that I wrote in when I was a young adult.. reading those were very interesting!
