Anyone here from San Diego? Lotsa ?s... :)

We're taking DD to San Diego for Spring Break - March 29 - April 4. (It's really an early birthday present as trying to get people to RSVP to invitations is like pulling teeth with tweezers. So to avoid any more heartache and wasted money, we decided to take her on a trip.)

We have several things we are planning to do (all touristy, you know!) The Zoo, of course; Wild Animal Park, Sea World, Harbor Cruise and the Double Decker bus tour. DD wants to go to the beach one morning, but I think it might be too cold to swim. She wants to look for "she-shells" but I don't know if they have them on that beach.

Also, any idea how know how far it is to Knotts Berry Farm? DD doesn't like "scary" rides but wanted to go the Camp Peanuts/Snoopy part. We just wanted to do a 1/2 day there. We will be staying in the "Mission Valley" area. We have one relative there but she is so busy, she never reads her email or I'd ask her.

We are looking for a good Mexican restaurant and we'd also like to find a good Indian restaurant.

All suggestions welcome! Thanks bunches!

I live in Orange County but go to San Diego a few times a year.

How old is your daughter?

Depending on the day and time of day, Knott's is a little over 2 hours drive from downtown San Diego. But it is a fun (and educational) park and even if she is very small, the regular rides outside of Camp Snoopy will work. There are only a handful of fast roller coasters there.

All you have to do is blink and you will find great Mexican food. They are all over. Old Towne is a good place to visit. I am not sure about Indian in SD.

The water will be too cold to go swimming, but you have to go to the beach just to go and to walk around. Be careful about collecting sea shells. Technically, it is against the law to remove any shells from the beach, but if you're quiet about it I wouldn't worry about getting into any trouble. Last weekend I went to Laguna and picked up a bunch of beautiful tumbled sea glass and I kept 3 shells that were really unique. I am not sure which beaches in SD are known for having a lot of shells, but you'd be sure to find some along the water line even on beaches that don't have many shells.

My mom and I went to San Diego a couple of years ago and had so much fun. You should definitely go to Old Town. We loved it and actually ended up going there twice. There is a great mexican restaurant called Cafe Coyote in Old Town. Knotts Berry Farm is pretty far away. I'm sure someone on here can give you an idea how far but I think at least a couple of hours.

I live about 10 miles inland San Diego. We probably average around 300 chill hours. Splash sets like crazy for me. I have had 50 on year two, 200-300 on year three and four. Dapple dandy sets good for me too. I had about 10 in year two, 50 on year three, and 100+ on year four. My dapple dandy have been huge. People mistake them for apples on the tree. Flavor King and Emerald drop have about 10 each after one year. Hard to tell how well they will set when mature. Each one had 100's of blooms this spring. Thanks Seysonn, that's helpful. I ended up letting the ones that were further along go to seed and have started collecting seed for next year. Meanwhile, I picked all the flower buds off the ones that hadn't gone completely to seed and made a ginger-shiso-toasted sesame oil pesto with the flower buds. Pretty tasty, but the sesame oil dominated...next time I'll go with olive oil. Hopefully, we'll get a few more weeks of leaves out of the plants I de-flowered. Yes, Jim, according to Japanese sources, shiso seeds stay dormant for at least 6 months before they will germinate. Smart temperate climate annual weeds, if you ask me. Very unlike it's cousin basil that will germinate right away - perhaps partly due to more extensive history of cultivation and selection in favor of fast germination?

Penny, It lits the most recent (which is just past) or the upcoming one, I guess. The second Saturday of the month is how I arrived at the May date. I trust that hasn't changed (they say they're doing better since I left, so maybe so...).

Coolice- After this purchase I will have no space left at all for newer plants. I have enough room to do my usual propagation but, when those have grown up a little I usually find good homes for them. I don't mind giving what I've grown to anyone..as long as I feel they could take care of the plant properly. After all, these are living creatures...to be respected and protected as any other living creature. I know it's corny but it's how I feel.

Hi; I live in San Diego. In addition to your to-do list, Legoland is not to be missed, altho it is mainly geared towards younger children (and adults) IMO. Sorry can't help about an Indian restaurant but there are tons of ethnic restaurants in the area. One tip: don't cross the border.

We looked at Legoland (DD is 7 1/2). Is it closer? DD doesn't like scary rides. I will google restaurants in San Diego - I just thought someone might have a recommendation.

Legoland is in Carlsbad, roughly 30 miles north of SD, up I-5. Knotts Berry Farm will be a long day - Could be 3 hours driving each way. Traffic is a bear in So. Calif.

Definitely visit Old Town.

I think we're going to scrap the amusement parks. I wonder what is in Old Town? Is there anything a little girl would be interested in?

No, not much of anything that she would care about in Old Town. There's lots to do in San Diego! Wonderful museums and the zoo in Balboa Park, there's Sea World, boat rides, bicycling, the Wild Animal Park, Legoland --she'll be just fine if she's not brave-- their rides are pretty tame and they have a small aquarium on the same property.
Google SAN DIEGO THINGS FOR KIDS and you'll find lots to do!

The aquarium at Scripps in La Jolla, just a few miles north of SD. Another fascinating place to visit.
