Garden not taking off here in San Diego area
Comments (8)Most plants care much more about the temperature of the soil that their roots are in than they do about the air temperature where their stems and foliage are. The problem with spring on the West Coast is that soil temperatures typically lag way behind air temperatures because in Mediterranean climates, soils are still wet in spring (compare this to Arizona, for example, where soil temperatures rise precipitously through March and April). In a La Niña year, this effect goes even deeper into late spring. It may feel like its getting summery to you, but soil temperatures are still cool as far as a plant's roots are concerned. Once the soil dries out a bit more it will warm up faster and plants will start making vigorous growth....See MoreSan Diego Water Rationing - What about my veggies?
Comments (7)Seems like a lot of water to me... Are you wetting the surface only or are you letting the water soak in and then hitting the same area again? Deep watering is usually better and promotes deeper root growth. Here in the Sacramento area we get temps between 90-105F for three months straight in the summer (we generally get zero rain between June and October). I water my raised beds no more than three times a week during the hottest days (and usually twice/week). The type of soil you have and whether you have raised beds that can help contain some of the moisture will make a difference. Mulching is also good and should limit evaporation... You might try cutting back on the water, but not all at once since your plants are used to daily waterings. Remember that even if the surface of the soil looks dry, 1" below the surface may have ample moisture. You could try poking a stick into the soil (or a moisture meter) to determine how dry the underlying soil might be....See MoreAustralian Finger Limes in San Diego County
Comments (45)It is very lovely where we are, we are surrounded by commercial nurseries because we have such great growing conditions right where we are. We feel very, very blessed We do spend huge amounts of time outside, here. I have an entire outdoor kitchen, in fact (both of us being of Italian extraction, we must have an awesome kitchen, lol!) We are all doing well, I am recovering from a shingles outbreak, which I'm kind of young for and had not gotten the vaccine, yet. I would not wish that on my worst enemy. So, I would admonish anyone who had chicken pox as a kid, to talk to your doctor about the wisdom of getting a shingles vaccination. I'm hoping I don't end up with permanent nerve damage from that outbreak, ugh. All the family is well, and we're gearing up for our annual July 4th shindig! Jades are doing great! One is big, one is still small, and I might have a little something for you, hint, hint :-) Patty S....See MoreOwner Builder Process - Full Backyard - San Diego
Comments (24)All-in, the whole back yard cost me less than 75k. Budget was 70k, so a little bit over...not much. This was all using top-of-the-line everything too. Didn't skimp on materials, or equipment. Pool builder quotes on the LOW end were 80k, for low-end materials, no waterfall, etc.... All-in, for the top of the line materials like I used, with deck, firepit, bbq island, waterfall, etc... the pool-builder quotes were closer to 120k. So yes - very happy with the outcome. Saved around 45k, or close to 40%. It was a LOT of work, and planning - but it payed off in spades....See MoreNeil
