Walmart Made My Day! Pickapeppa!

I finally found Pickapeppa sauce at our local walmart -- a new product for them, as I have checked there before... That means I can finally get that flank steak out of the freezer and make Nancy's Backwoods Flank Steak! For anyone new who hasn't seen the recipe -- here it is, cut and pasted from when Nancy (WizardNM)posted it before...

Backwoods Flank Steak Â from Wizardnm

3/4 C soy sauce

1/3 C Pickapeppa Sauce (this is a hot sauce)

1/3 C worcestershire sauce

1/4 C red wine

1/4 C red wine vinegar

1 1/2 Tabsp sesame oil

2 cloves of garlic, crushed

2 flank steaks (about 2 1/2 lbs total)

Combine the marinade ingredients in a container large enough to hold the steaks. Add the steakes and refrigerate 6 to 24 hrs... Then grill as you would any steak. We grilled it over lump charcoal and while it was cooking we would bring the marinade to a boil and cook it for about 15 min. We then sliced the steaks and poured the hot marinade over them. Slice the meat thin across the grain..

Lucky you Emily! I have had my eye out for that, even looked for it when I was in Vegas. No luck. Maybe I'll check out our local Walmart and see if they carry it....

You can order it on line at the pickapeppa website. Grace's Hot Pepper Sauce is supposed to be similar.

Hello everyone! I'm definitely NOT a fan of Wal-Mart, although I can appreciate the reasons why people shop there. Wal-Mart has extremely low prices, but I am absolutely NOT convinvced their products are of good quality. One of the few things I bought was a garden-hose-spray-nozzle for .99 which broke within a few days. At a yard sale, I got 2 used garden-hose-spray-nozzles for $1 each, which have held up faithfully. 4 years ago, My mom bought a kids' mountain bike for her grandson. What a piece of crap that was. Crappy enough to make a kid not want to ride a bike. Yes, it was very inexpensive, but who cares, if its just junk? I bought my mountain bike on local-ebay, 2nd hand, for a lot less than what it'd cost new. Walmart clothes: decent, but Target is far better. I'm lucky to live in a metropolitan area, where thrift stores are chock-full of good clothes. Nobody does a better job of being thrifty than me: I'm enthusiastic about buying things 2nd hand, at thrift stores, auctions, on craigslist.org, in the local paper, etc. I get a lot of great things, used. Where I live, anything I need can be found for a good price at smaller stores (...every store is smaller than Walmart). And if paying a little more means supporting a smaller and/or local store, I will do so. Smaller stores sometimes have great sales! I believe in supporting small/smaller businesses, because I believe they are healthy for our economy, from which everyone benefits. I wrote a letter to the mayor of Oregon City, thanking her for saying "no" to a Walmart store being built here. (She wrote me back!) Another point: Don't buy anything just because it's dirt cheap. Garbage service costs, and the landfills have enough junk already. How much useless crap could a household possibly need?

Ok... solution number 2! Go up, young man, go up! I'm out of conventional space, myself, as in windowsills and shelves and tables... but there is always room for a hook! I'm in the market for some wire baskets, so I can grow a few bulbs in a more orchid bark type of medium... as hanging plants! I already planted a community pot of seedlings in a plastic hanging basket, in Al's Mix, and they're hanging above the windowsill. I've got the hook stuck into the window frame for stability, and I'll be adding a few more as time goes by. Where there's a will, there's a way! If you have a basement, you can force a dormancy... scheduling a bulb for whatever time of year you'd prefer... so, there's always that... Personally, I think a sunroom/solarium addition would be easier to heat and cool... but what about humidity? How much humidity you'd need would depend on the plant type you most want to grow... orchids, of course, would probably appreciate a greenhouse... but many types would grow equally well in just a solarium. A solarium addition would be nice for both you and Chase to enjoy... I can imagine the whole perimeter filled with plants, and plants hanging everywhere... and 2 wicker chairs and a side table, set with iced tea and dessert, so you both can sit and enjoy it all! What a lovely visual! I love solariums!

LOL... some guys bought all the cell phones they had at 2 in the morning. Seemed odd enough the police were called and the Prosecutor charged them with being terrorists. Turned out they were not really terrorists. Seems cell phones cost different prices in different places so these guys were just making money buying them in one State and selling them in another. Lots of mean jokes about the Prosecutor after that... he will continue to get re-elected anyways. Local Wallyworld employees are terrible about keeping things in stock. It took six months and a complaint to a friend that works there for them to restock work pants in my size. I was going to buy a camera they had on display but they had none in stock for weeks. Finally I asked and the fellow looked it up and informed me they were not in stock or on order. I have discovered that things like the camera can be ordered online and picked up at the local store! A few years back I worked at a factory that used hot glue sticks by the thousand. Walmart was the best price we could find and they were happy to get us glue sticks by the case. All I need now is to figure out how to get my cat's food stocked again. Elder cat Yoko likes Friskie's Special Diet in the Turkey flavor. Walmart had it for years but now I have to drive to get it elsewhere. Yoko is going on 13 years old and gets anything she wants. I bought a new pillow for my bed. The best most expensive one Walmart had. Yoko took one look and claimed it... guess I'll have to buy another for myself. I was delighted when they put in a car service bay. Had my oil changed several times until they started getting weird. Seems for what ever reason it became a deal to put in Mobil synthetic oil for me. So I went back to changing my own oil... which I buy at Walmart! Even so I shop there all the time because they are the only store in town open all night long. A nice time for me to shop because of my work hours. The night people know me now so buying a 24 pack of TP after midnight does not even get me a second glance. They get me to buy lots of junk I don't need just because it is cheap... for $10 even I'll try a George Foreman grill. I'll have to look for the Maytag Blue next time. No, we had not eaten in there, she just went in to pick up the to go order. She had two gift cards, one with a few dollars on it and she was asked if she wanted a tip added and she said no. The next gift card which was full was given and she asked the second time if she wanted to add a tip to it. Yes, if we had eaten, a tip should be given, but I say if you are picking up the order, no. I found this description of Pickapeppa, and so it would be much milder than Grace's Sauce.

Thanks for posting this Flank steak recipe - We have Pickapeppa in our locally owned grocery store - never bought it before, but since I just happen to have a flank steak in the freezer...........I'll be grilling Nancy's Backwoods Flank Steak this week end - providing we don't get too much rain! I love new hot sauces!

Try that Pickapeppa sauce on cream cheese...yum!

Thanks for the recipe. I may grill this weekend and Flank steak may be on the menu. Sounds great!

I use the Pickapeppa sauce over fresh cooked greens such as collard greens , turnip greens and mustard greens. It adds flavor.

Hey Nancy --

Made the backwoods flank steak last night and the marinade /sauce is delicious! My DH didn't like the flank part of it as much as he could have -- a little too chewy for him, even sliced thinly against the grain -- so next time I think I'll use the marinade on london broil, which he prefers.

I will say I was surprised -- I thought it would be spicier, but the pickapeppa doesn't have as much kick as I anticipated. I think next time I'll add a little tabasco. But I was pleased that the sauce, even after boiling down, wasn't too salty -- I used low-sodium soy sauce which might have helped.

To clarify, does this recipe call for Pickapeppa Sauce (which is not called hot sauce on their web site) or Pickapepper Red Hot Sauce? I'm unclear because of the line:

1/3 C Pickapeppa Sauce (this is a hot sauce)

It's just the Pickapeppa Sauce. It has a little peppery bite but if you want it hot add some hot sauce.

Nancy , or anyone, can you think of a National Brand sauce that comes close to this? If not think I'll scout out an on line source, this recipe has been calling me for a long time!

Sharon - Scouting will be as easy as scrolling up to Lars' post. ;)

I think this is on my menu for this weekend. My wife says there's a Walmart within a couple miles of home, I just haven't happened to notice it before. Hopefully they carry the sauce or I'll be ordering, too.

Around these parts, every grocery store carries Pickapeppa. It's a food group, isn't it?

This morning I finally set foot in a Walmart. Unfortunately they did not make my day today, as they did not have Pickapeppa Sauce. The only good thing was that their entire salad dressing/condoment section was only about five feet wide and extremely limited so it only took me a minute to determine that they didn't have it. It's a huge store, but groceries are obviously not their main focus by any means.
