What color are your cabinets?

I don't think white appliances have to be in an all white kitchen - you could still go with your purple them, but maybe lighten it up a bit?

I am wondering when the stainless/granite look will be out. It has been THE thing for a while (as the all white was not that long ago).

I like my appliances white - they always look good, I think.

Be prepared for these "new" ones to not last like your '60's era appliances.

They say that the life span of a new fridge is 7 years. Geeze! I would have to say that is correct - I am on my second one in 15 years. They are much more energy efficient though. I am also on my second dishwasher and stove....I had GE for my first go round - and I will never buy another GE appliance - complete crap.

With white appliances, you can do the kitchen any color you want. What other colors do you have that you'll be keeping (cabinets, floor, furniture, etc?)

I'm in my house 35 years and have come to the conclusion that white really is the way to go. If you have colored appliances, you can never match the color in years to come, when one appliance dies (and who wants to buy 3-4 of them at a shot, if only one is bad?). Stainless is a nightmare to keep clean and scratches if you look at it cross-eyed. Black shows every smudge and smear as if it were under a spotlight. I'm willing to bet that after havign the white for a bit, you'll come to love them, and realize how very practical they are.

And are you saying your old appliances are purple? Never saw that.

Next time I do a kitchen over, it's going to be white, black, red (I have a bunch of apple stuff and some red Le Creuset) and green--if that's of any help. Saw a cute kitchen when I was looking at houses online, that had really cute red checked wallpaper (diagonal checks) that was so warm and homey looking.

These are the original cabinets from 1963, I just painted them purple. My old appliances or Stainless from 1963.

I love the idea of red, white and black. So, many red counter appliances now.

My bestfriend has black appliances and she is really sorry she did it. But, I love the look.

With all white appliance, the purple will definatly have to go.

I'd think that white appliances are a 'neutral' much like stainless, and you could keep the purple cabinets.

How about white cabinets and then purple backsplash for a splash of color?

I wasn't aware stainless was even available back in '63.

It is the smallest Frigidaire made. It has been out of commission for a year. I use a toaster oven to cook in for now. The range top only has 3 out of 4 burners that work. I've been looking for replacements. My DD's Oven is a Shove In type, not built in. So I would just cut out where the current range is for the shove in. The old oven "hole", could be storage/pantry.

I don't see why the white appliances wouldn't go with the purple.

I think the white would work the the purple. I would at least try it for a little while before you do any changes.

Now that you've posted the pictures of your kitchen, I'd definitely keep the purple. White will look lovely with it--very crisp and clean. Definitely don't be in a hurry to repaint, until you see how the kitchen looks with your new appliances. You can add whatever accent colors you like--moss green? or some warm toasty brown? or black. other shades of purple?

I agree,keep the purple! I love your purple kitchen.If I didn't live in a mobile home my cabinets would be a pretty bright color,maybe in the red family as I have hunter green tile and cabinet tops.Hey.....you could even paint the appliances! I've done that before too.They make paint for appliances.Paint them the color of your cabinets???

I love the purple cabs. Black and white would look dramatic.

My very first home had a Turquoise Oven/Range. Top that!

Oh gosh - I think the white would be just fine! Really!! Your countertops are white or off white - the appliances would look great. It must might seem different at first, since you have had the stainless for so long.

Was it the early 70's that had avocado green appliances?

What other old vintage 63 appliainces do you have? If you want to get rid of them there are people on automaticwasher.org who collect and restore them and use them

I just have the Range Top and Oven. But, I just sold a whole houseful of Country Maple Furniture to someone for their country home.

I've been weeding through this house for a full year.

Ron--you're right about avocado and the early '70's, not that I was around to decorate at the time, of course. (ahem, cough). Late 70's saw almond the color of choice.

That's why I stick to white. I think SS will be tomorrows avocado. Besides, I had a SS frig and it was awful to care for.

I wipe down my old stainless steel with what-ever is handy to disinfect, then I polish with Pledge. Same for old worn out counter tops.

Seventy years ago folks in town had ice boxes; rural folks saved fragile food in pans of cold water in the basement.

Sixty years ago they were buying fridges.

Fifty years ago they made fridges that lasted 40 years - or more.

In recent years we've sent people to the moon ... and brought them back.

And we can't build a fridge that'll last beyond 7 years?

A load o' bull crap, that!

Let's get on their backs and insist that they build a fridge that'll last 50 years!

It costs a lot of precious energy to mine metal, haul it to smelter, smelt it(an energy hog!), flatten the metal, shape it, assemble it ... and the haulage costs to all of those places.

Plus - above the wasteful use of energy - ever heard of pollution??

How about global warming??

Making a fridge that'll last for 40 years could be done 50 years ago ... and it can be done now!!

Let's insist!

And enlist our friends to insist, as well!

And folks in China and India who are going to be buying them for the first time need to have appliancs that are environmentally friendly like that, as well.

Because they'll be buying them by the millions!

We owe it to our grandkids capability to breathe decently ...

... to act on it.

And to do it now!
