I think I got this one from LindaC. They really smell good although they are a little dry for my taste. The dogs go nuts over them.

CHEESE BONES

2 cups flour
1 1/4 cups shredded cheese (your choice)
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 cup vegetable oil
Approximately 1/4 cup water, more or less

Preheat oven to 400. Combine the flour, cheese, garlic & oil. Add water if necessary to form a stiff dough & knead well. Roll out on a floured surface to 1/2" thick & cut into shapes. Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for 10-15 minutes or until the bottoms are lightly browned.~~ (about 3 dozen)

I bake a pan of beef spare ribs for my jr dogs as a favorite treat. 1 Hour at 350 on a broiling pan to catch the drippings. No seasoning.
The slab is cut into individual bones and I remove most of the meat (too fatty ).
They all go into a ziploc and in the the freezer.

They gnaw on these bones for hours...days. They are the perfect size for a small dog and they cannot choke on them or break them in pieces- unless my lawnmower hits one in the grass :(

I have made these from Lee in Colorado and all the dogs who ate them thanked me. (I love pugs, so soft and velvety - what's her/his name?)

DOUBLE GINGER DOG BISCUITS

2 ½ c Whole wheat flour
½ c powdered milk
½ t salt
½ c butter
1 T sugar
2 T ground ginger
3 T chopped crystallized ginger
1 egg
½ c water

Put first seven ingredients into food processor, pulse until mixture looks like cornmeal. Add egg and water, process until dough forms a ball (you may need a little more water).

Roll to 1/3 1/2 inch thick on floured board, cut to desired shapes, gather together and re-roll scraps. Place on cookie sheet with non stick foil on it or spray sheet with Pam.

Bake at 350º for 30-35 minutes until firm and dried out. For biscuits to keep well they must be baked until dry and hard. You can also leave them overnight in the oven with door ajar to dry out further.

BACON CHEDDAR BISCUITS

Here's a recipe for peanut butter cookies
1 cup flour AP
2 cups flour WW
1/2 cup rolled oats
2 t BP
1 1/2 c milk
1 c natural Peanut butter
1/4 cup cream cheese
1 T molasses preferably blackstrap

Filling:
1/2 cup soft or whipped cream cheese
1/2 cup peanut butter

Preheat oven to 350

Combine dry ingredients in large bowl

Mix rest of ingredients (except filling) in food processor until well mixed. Pour into dry ingredients and mix to dough

Roll out on floured surface 20 1/4" thickness. Cut with bone cutter or into shapes.

Bake for 20 min. For extra hard cookies, turn off oven and leave cookies in for 1 hour up to overnight.

Filling: Combine ingredients. Spread filling onto one cooled cookie, top with another.

Ok, here are a couple that got rave reviews with the neighborhood dogs...

Peanut Butter Cookies
1 c AP flour
1 c peanut butter
1 c skim milk
1/2 c chopped nuts (optional)
1 c whole wheat flour
1 T baking powder

Preheat oven to 375F

In food processor with steel blade, pulse peanut butter and milk till smooth. Add nuts, flours and baking powder and process until it comes together in a ball.

Roll out to 1/4" thickness and cut out or scoop 1 T size balls onto cookie sheet and flatten with fork.

Bake until browned, approximately 20 minutes.

Canine Cookies
2 c quick cook oats
4 chicken bouillon cubes
1/2 c margarine
2 c boiling water
2 c whole wheat flour
1 1/2 c cornmeal
1 c milk
2 eggs
2 T sugar
2 c grated cheddar cheese
all purpose flour as needed

Preheat oven to 350F
Line cookie sheets with parchment paper

Mix oats, bouillon cubes and margarine. Add water and let bouillon and margarine dissolve. Add all remaining ingredients except the AP flour.

Form into ball adding AP flour as needed to make a stiff dough. Roll out to 1/2" thick and cut out.

Bake 10-12 minutes until browned.

You have some good recipes here. Linda I'd love for you to post your treats too.

One suggestion. As well as making some cute bone cutouts and such take some of the dough and roll into a finger sized log and cut small rounds off of it. These can then be used as training treats. A nice big jar of training treats would be good too and with a new dog you always need to do some training. Smiles. Kudo's for her for adopting an adult dog. He's very cute. Best of luck to them all.

Molasses Onassis
2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup white flour
1/ Tsp Salt
2 Tbs Vegetable Oil
1/4 Cup Milk
1/4 Cup Cornmeal
1 Tsp Garlic Powder
1/4 Cup Oatmeal
1/4 cup molasses
2 large eggs
Preheat oven to 350 F. Mix dry ingredients. Add oil, molasses, eggs and milk. Add more milk as needed to make firm dough. Roll the dough so that it is 1/4" thick and cut into shapes. Bake on lightly oiled cookie sheet for 25-30 minutes.

Snickerpoodles Dog Treats
1/2 cup canola oil
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup honey
2 eggs
3 3/4 cups white flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup cornmeal
2 teaspoons cinnamon
Mix vegetable oil, shortening and honey together until smooth. Add eggs and beat well. Blend in flour, baking soda and cream of tartar. Knead dough until mixed well. Shape dough by rounded teaspoons into balls. Mix the cornmeal and cinnamon together in a bowl and roll balls in mixture. Place 2 inches apart on a cookie sheet that has been sprayed with a nonstick spray. Press the balls down with a fork twice going in 2 different directions or press with your favorite stamp. Bake 8 minutes at 400. Remove from baking sheet and cool on a rack.

Doggie Cake
2/3 cup ripe mashed bananas
1/2 cup softened butter
3 large eggs
3/4 cup water (I added one chicken bouillon cube to the water for more flavor)
2 cups Unbleached Flour (I used wheat flour, better for them)
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1/2 cup raisins
In mixing bowl, beat together mashed banana and butter until creamy. Add eggs and water. Beat well. Stir in dry ingredients. Beat until smooth. Add nuts and raisins. Spoon batter evenly into oiled and floured bundt pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for about 35 minutes. Cool on wire rack 5 minutes, remove from pan, replace on rack and cool.
Frosting - mix equal parts plain nonfat yogurt and peanut butter. For the colored part on my cake, I took a red dog buscuit and smashed it up and sprinkled it on top for some color.

Here is a doggy bday cake recipe as well...grin
DOGGIE BIRTHDAY CAKE
Don't forget the "Frosty Paws" from the grocery store to top off the
cake.

until well combined. Pour mixture into
a prepared cake pan and bake for 15 to 20 minutes.

RUMPOLE'S ROCKS: A DOGGONE GOOD SNACK
3 cups oatmeal
3 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup powdered milk
1/2 cup bacon grease or leftover fat
2 eggs
2 tsp cod-liver oil
1 1/2 cups canned beef or chicken gravy
Preheat oven to 325°. Combine all the ingredients & drop the mixture by spoonfuls onto an ungreased baking sheet. Bake for 50 minutes & cool the "rocks" on wire racks in a safe place. Store in a covered container & dole them out for "Good Doggies). Makes 30.

One christmas I made all sorts of doggie treats for all my doggie friends and "grand dogs" and iof course for Chabby.
Only Erin the Golden would touch my home made treats! sigh!

Fidos Favorite Treats

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.Grease cookie sheets. In large bowl combone rolled oats, margarine and water; let stand for 10 minutes. Sitr in cornmeal, sugar, boullion, milk,cheese and egg. Mix well. Add flour 1 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition to form stiff dough.
On floured surface, knead in remaining flour until dough is smooth and no longer sticky, 3 to 4 minutes. Roll or pat out dough to 1/2 inch thickness; cut with cookie cutter. Place 1 inch apart on cookie sheets.

Bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely. Store loosely covered. Makes 3 1/2 dozen large biscuits.

Dog Cookies [I'm not sure where I got this. I think from the KT]

1/2 c powdered milk
1 egg - well beaten
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. garlic salt
1.5 tsp. brown sugar
6 Tbs. gravy
1 large jar baby food meat

The rest is easy:

Mix all ingredients. Roll out about 1/2" thick. Cut with cookie cutter or shape by hand. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes.

Wow! Who knew there were so many different recipes!!

If you have a bone shaped cookie cutter....mape some "people cookies" for Porter's people using the bone cutter.

I hesitated a couple of days before posting this, because it's a little bit of a wet blanket (not much, though). One of my dogs had itching problems that we were first told were seasonal. They started out fairly minor but got worse and lasted for longer each year, till she was scratching all the time, all year. Nothing helped but prednisone shots, and even those didn't last long. She was miserable, and none of the vets we took her to knew what was causing it. This went on for about ten years.

We finally found out about the terrible trinity of dog allergens: wheat, corn, and soy. We removed all of those from her diet, and within two months the itching stopped completely.

I mention this because I used to make all sorts of treats using wheat flour (also cornmeal), which is what the standard recipes call for. If you simply tweak them and use rye flour instead of wheat, the treats will be just as good (maybe not to people, but the dogs never seem to mind!), and you won't risk creating allergic symptoms, like itching, hair loss, hot spots, dull coat, etc. Not all dogs have a bad reaction, but if yours does, it's a very easy fix.

The Molasses Onasis are what I make for Jillian, and yes Linda, they are Marlen's too. I add in chopped fresh herbs. Parsley, rosemary..whatever is growing at the time or I have in the fridge.

bumblebeez: Thanks for the tip on googling about garlic. Boy, talk about confusing, conflicting information. I still am not quite sure what to think. I may not make anything with garlic this time and I'll let my daughter make that call along with her vet.

One of my dogs devoloped a rash that they couldn't cure. We tried shots, medications, creams, you name it. Then we switched vets and the first thing she did was to remove wheat from his diet. Amazing! The rash just went away. When I switched their food I started reading labels. Almost all of the dog treats are wheat based. You have to go out of your way and pay top dollar to buy cookies with no wheat. After seeing all these recipes it finally dawned on me that it might be cheaper to just bake wheat free biscuits.

Thanks for all the recipes. I wonder if I could swap out another flour for some of these recipes that call for wheat flour?

It's not about rising but allergies. That's why good dogfoods never have corn , wheat or soy. They use in addtion to meat, of course, barley and brown rice.

That's sort of what I was trying to say bumblebeez! You just said it much clearer than I did, thank you!

I would like to try oat flour. Easy to make.
I have barley and brown rice on hand as well and could make flour from those.
Or corn.
Or rye.
Or triticale (might be too close to wheat).
So many grains, so little time!! LOL

We just switched Mojo to a salmon-based dog food ($$$$) and he is still itching like mad.

I'll have to look at the ingredients and see if there is wheat, soy or corn in this new food. If so, I am not sure where to turn! This stuff is hard enough to find, much less one that doesn't contain any of those products!

I give my dogs Wellness Super5 chicken dry dogfood. They don't have any problems. It has no corn, wheat or soy. But your dogs itching might be from something other than allergies.
My dogs don't get table scraps either unless it's a bit of meat. They won't eat vegetables at all.

Linda I'm sorry your dog is having problems. Allergy tests for dogs are not cheap, but in the long run with changing expensive foods and vets and meds and of course most importantly the poor dogs itching and such, it's usually worth it to find out just what the allergies are. Corn is a major one but so is chicken. Lots of good foods that don't have wheat or corn might use chicken meal. In the long run it's just usually best and cheaper to bite the bullet and get the comprehensive allergy tests. A recent test of a friends dog showed he was allergic to chicken but not eggs or turkey. Odd. You just never know.
