Bbbrrrr! Oh baby it's cold outside!

A few shots and news articles from Calgary and the province. I'm staying indoors today. I may bake some cupcakes to bring to work tomorrow. And I know I'm playing with my new photoshop CS5 program later. I painted a picture yesterday. It's on my Flickr account.

Minus 5 here in ND as we are getting that artic blast. Still snow and blowing snow more today and tomorrow.

Forgot to water today, but brought them all in anyway. Only supposed to get to 32,so I guess the Crown of Thorns will be fine with a blanket over it. It survived 25 degrees last year in North Port. Got frozen back a lot, even covered, but came back from the roots. I left the Aloe outside and the Clivia, and pulled all the cold-tolerant things up next to the sliding glass door where the indoor heat can radiate out to them. I really need to repot that COT in a plastic pot! It's not going to survive here if I can't bring it in. It's sad enough that it doesn't get enough sun to bloom. I'm thinking about asking my next door neighbor if I can put it on his patio. He never uses his patio, and it gets more sun than mine. My poor desertrose has lost all its leaves. I can't wait for spring so I can cut it back. It loses leaves every winter, but it's never gone completely bare before. This place just is not good for it. I hope that by the time my lease is up, I'll have enough money to move to a better place for me and the plants.

We're looking for a high around 0Â°F (-18Â°C) today. Right now it's -17Â°F (-27Â°C), windchill of -30Â°F (-34Â°C) and this is using the "new" downgraded windchill calculation. But I'm not going to complain since I noticed it's currently -35Â°F (-37Â°C), and that's air temp, not windchill, in some of the northern parts of the state. At least there's no wind up there to complicate things. Oh Dottie!! Phyllis!! I hope you're cuddled up and toasty warm! Don't venture outside today! Not a good day for building snowmen in your swimsuits! although why you'd want to put your swimsuit on a snowman, I'll never know! :)

It was a beautiful sunny day here today, but cool by all your standards, 16 degrees celsius. I don't know how you all stand the heat, those temperatures are stunning. We've had quite a bit of rain too, which will drive my jades under cover in the tunnel if it keeps up. The different climates really add to this forum, they're fascinating.

"Going down to 0 F. tonight (my Zone 7 minimum)." Well, not exactly, as people in a HUGE swath of northeastern NC and southern and central Virginia are finding out tonight. There are currently areas that are listed as 7b on the latest, greatest USDA map that have plummeted as low as -12F! And areas listed as zone 8a that have hit -5F! There are gonna be some dead or severely injured camellias tonight, believe me. Once you go south and east of Richmond the older cultivars become fairly common in gardens. They were often not selected for hardiness. I've driven from Raleigh to Norfolk along back roads and there are plenty planted there. Because the Bay and lower rivers are not frozen, areas like Norfolk, VA Beach, even Kent Island, etc. are doing fine. The worse possible locations seem to be areas along small regional rivers in the upper coastal plain, where the cold air is settling...no wind anymore to stir it up...and there's not enough water to provide counterbalancing warmth. The shocking -12F figure was along the Chowan River. Plant Delights is lucky, they are only about 20 miles away from the area with snow cover, where temps are going below 0F. Which would be the coldest they've been since 1985. As it is I think they will hit 5F. Another cold zone I've noticed before is along all but the southernmost parts of the Patuxent river valley in southern MD. And even along the lower parts, if you're away from the main body of water on a tiny frozen tributary, you're dropping below 0F tonight. All of New England is below zero except for areas right on the water. Of course, it's less of a surprise up there! Sub-0F readings are even popping up on Long Island. I'm surprised there aren't more widespread sub-0F temps in the NJ Pine Barrens. The stations that are showing below 0F are closer to the water, because that's where more snow fell. It's a dramatic illustration of the double-edged sword that is snow cover. Protects things under it, but allows temperatures to plummet during radiative freezes on clear, still nights. We saw this same pattern in the polar vortex winters, too. The coldest places on still nights are places where it's relative flat, but you're still in a depression...and away from large water. With heavy snow cover! One particular night, the center of the Delmarva Peninsula started going below 0F AT 11PM (!) before a lucky change of wind direction occurred. Still many stations hit -5F or so.

-16C here, with windchills bringing it down to -29C. The wind has been really bad.

its 44 degrees here now in Fl, but let me tell you its COLD. Our heat went out last night and it was tooo cold for me. We are trying to get it fixed now.

Hi Debby - my BIL lives in Calgary. Brrrrr is right. I'm near Kingston ON but in between 3 weather patterns. Quite often we either get murdered with hard storms in the fall (gail force winds and rain) and the winter we seem to miss alot that hits along the St. Lawrence, Ottawa area and stuff from Toronto either blows north or south of us. Being new in this area, going by our new friends - we are kinda in a Bermuda Triangle. Sure gives us a false sense of security. Who can tell these days what's gonna hit!

As for the weather - LOOKS like blowing snow from time to time. To busy indoors today to have any clue with the woodstove. Our home is built into a hillside with heavy insulation. It's toasty with the woodstove dying down - we bring it back up around 4:30 pm.

Weird, weird, weird January weather here. We should be freezing our tails off right now. Pop over for tea or better yet Hot Toddies if anyone is cold. LOL.

27Ã¯Â¿Â½ in NE Texas at 1 pm finally snowing here. saw on TV that 220 was closed tops of roofs are all white and the snowflakes are really big. I think we expect about 3 inches today. I'm ok as long as the elec stays on. DS showed me how to light the propane heaters just in case.
I don't want to go thru the ice storm of 2000 again that's for sure. My sterno stove is ready and other things . keeping house nice and warm too

It was close to zero when I got up this morning. No wind so no problem. After church some of us were saying "We can dress for the cold but there is no way to dress or undress for the heat and humidity in August".

It's 22 here tonight at 5:30pm, but feels much colder out there. The dog and I went for a shorter than usual walk. Came in and put the kettle on to heat water for a cup of hot chocolate. Think I'll plop a big 'ole marshmallow in it too.
