HELP: Thermostat Wiring for Air Handler and Heat Pump

First let me tell you what equipment I have:

Air Handler: Lennox CB18-26-2P (Electric)

Heat Pump: Lennox 10HPB

New Thermostat: Feature Comfort LP160

On top of the air handler there is what I would call a distribution board in which the HP and Thermostat is wired to.

On the LP160 Thermostat it is labled as:

R - Switched Side, 24 VAC

O - Reversing Valve (Cool)

B - Reversing Valve (Heat)

G - Fan

W - Heater Output

Y - Cooler Output

C - Unswitched Side, 24 VAC

Current Wiring:

Thermostat --------Air Handler--------------Heat Pump

..........................3------------------------C (Green)

G-------------------G

W-------------------W1----------------------W1 (Yellow)

R-------------------R------------------------R (Black)

O--------------------------------------------O (Red direct to HP)

Y-------------------------------------------Y1 (White direct to HP)

Here is what is going on and tell me if this is how it is supposed to work:

1. On the Thermostat instructions it saids for Heat Pump usage I need to jumper Y & W together.

a. If I do this then where would I run the now single wire to?

b. I would be loosing either Y1 or W1 from my current configuration.

2. On the Thermostat instructions it saids for Heat Pump you should either use O or B never both, I chose to run it to O because the HP said O, but this is for the Reversing Valve, when would I know if to use O or B. On the Thermostat O = Cool and B = Heat.

3. Would anyone know what 3 is on the Air Handler? Is this is same as C? When I took the panel off on the Air handler I saw two wires, on going to the power supply and the other to a heating element.

4. I turned on the Thermostat on COOL and the HP kicked on and the AC kicked in as expected.

5. However when I put the temp up to 90 degrees the HP turned off and the Air Handler kicked in.

a. I thought that a Heat Pump would kick on when the temp was above 30 or 35 degrees. I was about 50 degrees when I did this.

All I need to know is if I wired it up properly and if not can you guide me. I did not touch any of the existing wiring from Air Handler to HP, i just tried matching up to thermostat.

On most heatpumps, the reversing valve is in the heat position at rest, meaning with no power to the coil that moves it. It you want the heatpump to cool, the 24vac must be applied to the coil of the valve to move it to the cool position. This is where "O" on your thermostat come into play. So... with everything off, 24vac comes into the thermostat at the R terminal. Its just sitting there waiting for you to turn on the heat or the cool. Now lets say you turn it to cool. Points close between the R on the thermostat and the Y on the thermostat & also the R and the O on the thermostat. 24vac flows from the R terminal into the Y terminal, out the wire that is attached to the Y terminal to one side of the contactor(makes the compressor come on). Power also flows from the R terminal of the thermostat to the O terminal, out the wire that is attached to the O terminal to the reversing valve, making it change positions for cooling. Power then comes from both the contactor & reversing valve back to the thermostat into the C terminal.

Mind you, this is a very simple explination of a complicated process since there are many different H.P. t-stats out there with all different kinds of labeling.

That is a great explanation. With that being said do you know why they ask to have Y and W jumpered?
Also any info on the temperature of the Heat Pump kicking on?

Nonsense about oil heat adversely affecting sale of my home in my area. As I have previously explained, I live in a relatively affluent subdivision of early 1970s residences in the MD suburbs of DC. The homes built in 1970-1972 all have gas heat. In 1973 a moratorium was created preventing any new gas hookups and thus the second half of the homes all have oil heat. I do follow property values in our area quite closely and the selling prices have no apparent correlation with heating fuel type. As a retired military service member, I have bought and sold many homes - likely more that most here. Heating method, while an item of immense interest in this forum was not at the top of the list of considerations re any home my wife and I bought. Schools, yes. # BRs and # baths, location, age of home, location, commute, condition, perceived re-sale, all yes. (And likely many other considerations, including working heating. lol) I'm a bit of a TV junkie now that I'm retired. I do watch "House Hunters" and I have NEVER heard a house hunter identify heating fuel as a consideration in their search. There is a lot of bad advice given here due to not "doing the math" - all things being equal, I would prefer to have NG heat rather than oil. Cheaper operating costs, not concern about deliveries, etc. However, I have done the best I can to insulate, reduce heating set point, shift the heating burden to heat pump, and closely monitor costs. I don't have NG available, but based on the costs to bring in NG (based on the experience of a few of my neighbors that were able) it makes absolute no economic sense IN MY CASE. If you don't use very much of an expensive product, your absolute costs may not be that great and the incentive to convert may well be lessened. If you visit the roofing forum, I suspect they'll identify the roof as the most important factor effecting price... in the landscaping forum it will be the grounds, in the kitchen forum, the kitchen and bath. Heating is certainly an important concern, but we need not cry wolf about it.

Tigerdunes,thanks for responding. House is 2125 s/f ranch. As stated above have 14 yr old 3ton Goodman R-22 heat pump with bad compressor. When it was working it seem to work well, except in extreme hot & cold would have to raise or lower thermostat to keep up and would run more. And you would feel cool air fist coming out of vents before heating. Never had a problem with air handler, 27 yr old Carrier, which is in the attic,except for a capacitor. The heat pump had condensor fan replaced, some capacitors, and last couple years had hard start on it. I was also told the line set would not have to be changed on the XR15, but according to specs on net for 3 ton Goodman, it has 3/4 and 3/8 as opposed to specs on XR15 which is 3/4 and 7/8? What size heat strip do you suggest? Your thoughts on changing the 27 yr old ductwork. If so, size and type recommended. Same size as existing or is size of duct related to type system/size system installed?

We are thinking of replacing our 15 year old heat pump and 25 year old air handler with the above Trane models (SEER 17; HSPF 9 with a Honeywell programable thermostat) for a total price of $10,675 including installation. Also recommended were the following: Trane Clean Effects Air Cleaner ($1,200); and Aprilaire #400 humidifier mounted on the air handler. Can anyone comment on the price and the selections? Jane

Technicians don't have licensing (at least not in Texas). Many companies claim this, but anyone with $20 and a clean back ground can submit their application to TDLR and get a "Technician License" if that's what you want to call it. It means nothing. HVAC contractor's license: what I have gives you this: TACLB28416E (requires much more than just money to get it.) That is a 'REAL' license. The other is more or less a registration with the state, that provides a way for the state to keep tabs on those with criminal records, because by and large the HVAC companies never follow thru.

y & w are jumped for 1st stage heat. It energizes the w which energizes the y making the heat pump come on, the o is not energized causing the heat instead of the cooling to come on. Most t-stats (not all) automatically send second stage back up heat if the unit does not heat up fast enough or the t-stat is to high. Some hp have outdoor sensors that prevent the hp to run if below "35". If it had a dual fuel board it will cut outdoor unit off when back up heat is on. Check the outdoor t-stat and set indoor t-stat 5deg up and see what happens.
