The Birthday Dinner. Fit for a 10 year old?

Yep my baby turns 10 today, and as tradition in the family, he got to pick the menu. He actually started planning it a few days ago, and this morning informed me what he would like.

Appetizer - Arancini (fried Italian Rice Balls with mozzarella and tomato sauce on the side)

Salad - Roasted Golden Beets with Spinach

Entree - Planked Salmon with Honey Balsamic, Penne, Broccolini with crushed red pepper and garlic

Dessert - Carvel Brownie Ice Cream Cake (I got off easy on this one!)

I am so blown away with his ability to put flavors and ideas together, he really is a little gourmand in the making. Hopefully, I will remember to get a few pics as the night goes on.....

You've got to be kidding me. It's a stretch for me to imagine that my son would try rice balls and beets and salmon before his 10th birthday, let alone request them!

premix, with chopsticks! put a glob on a paper, right in front of them and they can pick up little bits of the adhesive with the chopstick and put it on the back of each piece. it's a neat way to do it and several have already posted this idea in a few different ways of it... no tubes of the runny stuff and no need to have too much clean up later. the most they're going to have, is a bunch of it dried on their hands. I haven't figured out a way to eliminate that part yet.lol it comes in the little tubs I have mentioned before. sanded grout/adhesive all in one. I get them at Home Depot. my favorite is the antique white.it's an aged vintage look. then I always end up painting over it anyway..lol when I did the frying pan, I used it and then I painte it but I used a crackle paint, under the second coat and that's why the black shows through the second color. I wanted that aged, cracked look or was it a different color under the reddish? I can't remember..I painted it more than once..lol then I used the chopstick to clean off the dry grout from the pieces when it was all dry. remember that comment I made, way back when, about when I was in the court room and I was quietly nipping bits of the grout off of the pan and the judge asked me to leave, cuz of a 'contraband weapon' in the court room? hello, a chopstick??? (not me!..I was with a friend for a civil violation)

Twin bed with a desk and/or bookshelves and bulletin board Or several bulletin boards) and full-length mirror on back of door. Good lighting AND (if possible) a small chair. BASIC REASONS FOR EACH SUGGESTION: Twin bed to allow for more room (perhaps a blow-up Aero bed for guest?) Desk and/or bookshelves to develop a love of crafts, art projects, books and reading on real paper! (not just the computer!) Bulletin boards allow fast and easy changes of personal photos and "stuff" A full-length mirror on back of door for checking the full "look" (and to free up time in the family bathroom LOL!) Good lighting by the bed and around the whole room. A small cozy chair is wonderful to have a space that is so private (like a hug from your home!) Always loved having my own desk with my own books in my own room! (wish I had one now! sigh) Used the desk for MY art projects! LOVED having MY own books ..... Jan

10 year old thermador downdraft vent--repair or replace?

I had the same problem in a 10+ year old unit. Had a Dr. Appliance person come out 3 times. Then found another fellow who specializes in thermador, subzero, Bosch repair who finally fixed the root problem. It needed to get the motor changed. In our case it was just one side that wasn’t working but I got both sides done. That was maybe 5 years ago and no problem since. I had been close to replacing the entire unit but he said that the unit is good one and should keep it.

Omg Alexa. LOL. When I read the title of this thread I said to myself this is going to be a hard one. LOL. I'm just glad we didn't have to help you figure out what to serve him. Phewww. What a great dinner. I love this kid. Happy Birthday young gourmand!

It sounds wonderful to me. Does he plan a menu regularly, like once a week? Sometimes I think it much harder to decide what to have than to cook it; that's when I say to Max, in a loud voice, YOU PICK!

David always wants a Dairy Queen Cake, the darned things cost something like $25, I'd rather bake a cake!

Have fun. When my girls were 10 they would have wanted pizza, iceberg lettuce with ranch dressing and chocolate cake. In fact, Ashley still would.

WOW! That is amazing coming from a 10 year old; heck, that would be amazing for me to come up with.

When my DD was 10, she wanted tacos for her birthday dinner.

Alexa, OMG! What have you been teaching your kids!lol Both my daughters are college aged and can cook quite nicely. But I doubt they even knew what Broccolini was when they were 10. Job well done girl! NancyLouise

Thanks everyone - yes this kid loves great food. The other one would have asked for either a 28 oz steak and nothing else, or pizza/wings/etc.

Here is the arancini recipe I used this time, I omitted the egg wash because the rice was pretty sticky already, and I halved the cheese cubes (8 oz cheese total) It was plenty! Oh, and yes, I drizzled with olive oil and broiled instead of frying. They were really good. Next time I am trying a recipe that calls for shredded mozzarella instead of a cube in the center... still looking for the ultimate recipe.

Broiled Arancini Italian Rice Balls (Arancini)

These rice balls are great as an appetizer or a main meal with a nice salad and broccoli and garlic side dish.

1 lb white rice
4 eggs
1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
1 lb mozzarella cheese, cut in 16 cubes
1 1/2 cups Italian seasoned breadcrumbs
olive oil

Cook rice until sticky.
Let cool.
Mix rice, 4 egg yolks and grated cheese in large bowl.
Form rice mixture into balls (the size of a large meatball)) enclosing cube of Mozzarella inside each rice ball.
Beat egg whites.
Dip each rice ball in beaten egg whites and then in bread crumbs.
Drizzle with olive oil and broil on all sides until well browned.
To serve, split open and top with tomato sauce.
Makes 12 to 14.

Alexa, for my DS' birthday last summer (also his 10th), he requested grilled salmon, cheese ravioli with pesto, broccoli and ice cream cake!

Thanks for the Arancini recipe. Next time I cook rice, I'll make extra and give it a try.

Add me to the list of those with children who never would have requested something this fancy! Mine are grown now and still request their favorites. My youngest had her 24th birthday on Tuesday, so I invited her and her husband over for dinner. She requested either "old hen and noodles" or lasagna. I explained that lasagna was not something I usually could do after school (and I'm not on spring break till the 18th), so she was happy with "old hen and noodles". (I fix a whole chicken in the crockpot, then make noodles in the drippings from the chicken. Not exactly the lowest calorie noodles, but they're good.)

I love it! Happy Birthday to your baby. My baby will turn 10 in July and I can tell you now his first choice would be McDonald's. Makes me want to bang my head against a wall!. Sounds like you had a truly wonderful dinner.
