I just wanted to thank you for all of your assistance. I have my new system (Trane XR15 4 ton)in and it works like a charm.I had the installer to stage my 20KW stips to the full 20kw only when the system goes to in deforst mode as you suggested. My old Goodman was 20KW also so I can see why my heating bill was so high. The installer said that that was smart thinking to have it stage. Even got HW Vision Pro IAQ stat. The V/S is an amazing fan. You can even tell just by how hard the fan is running by just standing under a vent. I couldn't have done this without you IMO. You are the greatest.

I appreciate the accolade and I was glad to help you.

It is always good to hear from an OP who was satisfied with his purchase. Many people come on this forum and rarely tell you their decision, much less how the new HVAC worked out.

Just so you are aware, Trane's XR15 was built, marketed, and sold to meet the tax credit qualifying standard. If I recall correctly, you were going to pay about $1250/ton on your four ton system after all rebates and tax credit. That's a whale of a system for the net money involved. Your system should be much quieter than what you replaced.

Trane has been challenged and in my opinion still are behind the curve in their performance/eff numbers especially in 3,3 1/2,4 and 5 ton systems both AC and HP upper end condensers.

I am glad you had that large 20KW heat srrip staged and that you decided on HW VP IAQ stat which is by far the best choice for your area/climate.

I will assume that dealer knew about setting up correctly the "DOD" dehumidify on demand feature of the IAQ which you will most likely need for your summer climate.

I always like to give credit where credit is due. And you deserve it. My total cost was a little better than the 1250 a ton for my 4 ton system. It came to 1145 a ton after rebates and credit and that includes 10 parts and labor warrenty. They didn't even charge extra for staging the system. This company really worked with me. I can see why they are #1 in my area on service and customer service. On the DOD the tech did set several up before but he didn't want to make a mistake so his called his manager and he came out to make sure that it was set up correctly.
So I'm set for 10 years IMO and I'll talk to you in 10>

Was caught up in work last 2 days. Tigerdunes, you said "A word of caution. Manufacturer literature can be misleading. Yes, the 602 thermostat will work. But it is not a true two stage thermostat and you would be running on high stage most of the time whether needed or not. The 602 by being the wrong stat totally shortchanges the capability and function of a nice two stage furnace like the XV95." Can you please let me know which Trane t-stat is a true 2-stage one. Or is it better to use some non-Trane product instead? I will appreciate any recommendations. Also, regarding "code for your location regarding condensate draining" , I have confirmed that township code requires condensate to be drained inside the house. And for me that's the slop sink in the lower level:-( I have a question regarding an additional return. One installer mentioned that I need to add a return in the lower level (there is none currently) and that it will cost about $400 since they have to put in ducts etc. Another installed said that they could simple cut an inner wall and put a register that hooks into the current return from upstairs at a cost of about $50. Which of these options makes sense? One final question: I am close to making a decision. Is it considered acceptable to ask the preferred installer to give me a better price? How is this approach viewed by professionals in this business? Thanks a lot for your help and Mike too!

IMHO, the reason for the failure was the system age. It was original Bryant equipment from when the condo was built 29+ years ago. Out of 200+ condos, mine was the last survivor of the bunch as far as I could tell, and most definitely in the immediate area. It was actually one of the last remaining in 1998 when I bought the place, so it owed me nothing. The tech said that there was several issues including a compressor isssue that was tripping the breaker, evaporator coil leaking, and blower wheel bearing. As for linesets, I poised the question and the dealer said that they did not need to be replaced, but they were going to flush them and reuse them. To replace them I would need substantial drywall removed for access (heat pump on lower level, air handler on upper level). He did not believe that we needed to go to that expense. Finally, from what I read, you do indeed still need to register the units within 90 days with Trane for the extended warranty.

Mbwaldrp If you the homeowner want to independently control humidity setting in AC cooling, then the preferred thermostat is Honeywell Vision Pro IAQ that has "dehumidify on demand" feature. With this stat, comfort r setting is disabled. Second choice would be Trane or AmStd 803 or identical HW 8321 that makes the Trane stat. Comfort R setting is used with this stat. Before I made any changes, you need to take some humidity readings at several different areas in your home at different times of the day. There are too many variables to make a good and accurate answer to your final question. I will say this. If you don't have zoning controls for controlling temperature Between first and second floor, you can expect a temperature differential of up to 10 degrees. This can depend on ductwork design/sizing, insulation/building qualities,whether you have damper control between airflow to first/second floor, and where the thermostat is located. IMO IMO

I'm still waiting for a response from the Contractor, who has been sick the last few days, and I am still pushing for the HW Vision Pro IAQ Stat to be installed. Another question. I am thinking about going with the Air Handler with Heat Strips as the backup system to the Heatpump, instead of having the Gas Furnace. The main reasons for going with the Air Handler and Heat Strips is because the Effeciency ratings are actually higher for the Heatpumps with this configuration, and according to the Contractor the Air Handler and Heat Strips are less complex and should have fewer problems. My question is two fold. 1 - Do you agree with that statement and do you think going with the Air Handler and Heat Strips over the Gas Furnace is a good idea? 2 - Any feedback on what we can expect for the Heat that the Heat Strips put out, vs what we would have with the Gas Furnace? My wife is not thrilled with the so called "Heat" from our existing Heatpump, but that should be better with these new Heatpumps. But she Loves the Warmth of the Gas Furnace when that kicks in, and she wants to make sure that we aren't giving that up by going with Heat Strips vs the Gas Furnace. So any additional advice and input would be greatly appreciated since we have no experience with Air Handlers and Heat Strips as a backup heat source. Thanks!
