re: time to replace the compressor?

I purchased my home 5 years ago with the current Goodman air conditioner (CK36-1T) and furnace (GMP075-3) that was installed in Oct 1996. In research, the above air conditioner is a 3 ton 10+ SEER unit. Since 2006 I have replaced the circuit board twice and also the capacitor along with regular maintenance twice a year. Last year when the condensing unit/compressor was serviced, 2 weeks later I had to replace the capacitor again and at the time was told "the unit was getting old", but wait until it quits completely before replacing. Since that time my heating/ac man has died unexpectantly and I am having a new company come do my service this week.

My question------since there is now a tax credit offered for higher efficiency units and Trane is offering 16 mths interest free for a new unit; should I replace my current unit and what should be the cost and labor of a Trane 15i unit?

Thanks for any suggestions/info.
