Finished First Kitchen Remodel.

I posted once in Gallery but was told to post here.

This is my first house and first kitchen remodel. The old kitchen was in such bad shape the the sub-floor was rotting and had to be replaced. It took a month but here is the finished results and pictures. I did maple shaker style doors, and Alaska Granite with a 2 1/4 edge, full back-splash. I did SS pulls, SS under-mount sink, a cheap whirlpool hood, Costco Hansgrohe faucet. I did some LED lights that i think turned out pretty well and they only use 18 watts all together. It's so much easier to get input if you have pictures to post and also a rough diagram on paper of your layout. There are so many talented people on this forum and I'm betting you will gets tons of advice. First, read the thread "Read me if you're new to GW kitchens" by beuhl. As you scroll down, there's a section that tells you how to upload and post pictures. You open a free account with a site like photobucket.com, upload your pictures to that site, click on the picture's HTML code to copy, then you paste that in the body of the message. Numbers/letters will appear and when you click on preview your picture should show up in the message body. Then if it's all good, hit submit and there it is!! Sounds a lot harder than it is. Your kitchen sounds very nce from your descriptions. Can visualize stainless and antique bronze. If you could post pics of a piece of your tile/floor, a picture of your granite, the cabinets, and the marble the experts here can help with the backsplash. My advice, without seeing any pictures, would be to pick a nice, warm tan/cream color that would look nice with the granite and cabs. Or maybe a light gold?? So many things you could do. What colors are in the marble?? Take a deep breath-you seem to be doing just fine and you will have lots of support here. Glad to hear you are ok. We had friends who worked in the WTC and they got out in time too.

We have done 2 DIY kitchen remodels. The first was on a lower scale, but it involved removing a wall, new floors, new cabinets, new counters, new drywall, new recessed lighting, etc...I think it cost us probably $35k. The only thing we hired someone for was to install Cambria Quartz counters. It took about 4-5 months to complete from start to finish. That was while DH and I both worked full-time and we had 2 dogs and 2 cats but NO KIDS. The 2nd remodel only involved recessing a fridge into an existing wall. But DH basically had to remove that wall and rebuild it. We added 2 new windows, new cabinets, new gas stove, new counters, new prep sink, new recessed lighting (old lighting was there but we moved cans and added some new ones). This remodel cost us more like $40k. We splurged on a nice Bluestar range and hood. We kept our old dishwasher and fridge. This remodel started April 2013 with a demo. We had a professional come in to sand and refinish the hardwood flooring. We didnt start installing new cabinets until late July 2013. So from May-June was just working in the kitchen that was down to the studs. We had 2 kids at this point too. I was cooking on a hot plate, microwave and toaster oven from mid April - late August. Awful! We didnt get counters installed until late September. So that makes it about 6 months and there are still tiny little details that need completing. I think your budget is tight for the big items (appliances, cabinets, counters) but you have to remember all of the little things that you will need to run out and buy at the local hardware store or home depot. Those will add hundreds or thousands to your bill. Plus items like faucets, drains, sinks, lighting. Those really add up. And there is no way you will get that all done in 1 week? That is just crazy. I would say you need more like 2 months and thats if you work like crazy. For this latest remodel we hired people to resand and refinish the floors, paid $700 for a guy to come do some drywalling for us, and then paid for the Quartz Countertop installation - Cambria that cost us close to $7k. My kitchen measures something like 16" x 11". Good luck though! I look forward to seeing your progress. I bought alot of things off of ebay (Blanco sinks, Grohe faucets) and that saved me at least $1000.

Practically in tears and ready to run down the street screaming. Electrician seems ancient and fairly clueless. An upstairs outlet went partially bad (sudden low voltage/no power in half) after he left the other day. He is back today and seems disinterested in this issue. Drywall people still aren't here. They were supposed to arrive 2 hours ago. Worst of all the project manager has not been reachable since Monday. Won't return phone calls. Or emails. And to top it off, undarling husband refuses to be upset about anything EXCEPT being very mad at me for not being super chill about everything. I used to flip places and know the vagaries of dealing with contractors and subs and how you need to keep abreast of everything. Meanwhile, dh's Mom bought him this house a decade ago. Because he knows nothing he thinks everything is going well.

There are reasons GC costs money, sometimes BIG Money. But they prevent disasters. Just to name a few, GC's work including planning sequence of events, scheduling work, mitigating risks, progress, verifying results, controlling costs and most important, providing solutions for anything unexpected. Do you know how long each job would take, and how much it would cost? Do you know how much slack you need to leave between each jobs and each stage of the project? Which should come first? which could wait for a while? Do you know how to recover if any work is behind schedule? Do you know how to adjust budget and cost if you have cost overrun? Do you know the requirement of each task? Can you judge if any task meeting standards and requirements? Can you tell a good job from a bad one? Do you have contingency plan for any event and risk, such as heavy rain stops transporting of your order that is 3 states away. A contractor has to reschedule work because his wife gives birth a couple of weeks earlier. An item you order does not arrive in time or the vendor sends a wrong item or item has missing parts or defectives? Are you good at settling dispute with vendors, smoothing conflicts between different contractors or job shops? Can you use languages that building department employees, inspectors, vendors and contractors understand? The list goes on and on. At times even you have plenty money it would not help, since money could not buy time. If you have 100 percent confidence answering all of the above questions (they are only a subset of issues and problems), you still need extra capacity and competency to handle anything unexpected, unplanned, failed, and...etc.

I can imagine working in this space--very functional layout! Nice job with coordinating colors and textures. This design scheme could be a model for many other remodelers, Rericksonsd.

Your kitchen looks so good!
Thanks for showing the UCL in a darker environment. How tall is the crown moulding? I like the matching BS and counters.
Please provide more details about the cabinets.

Wow, beautiful! I love the clean contemporary efficient look of your kitchen and for inspiration it's nice to see a cab color that is different from many others on this site. LOVE your granite and cool floor; is it ceramic tile with linen or bark-like texture?

Curious what's on the wall opposite the sink? More cabs or open to a dining or other space? Between windows and openings I have limited wall space so I'm always interested in the "whole picture" of other remodels. Thanks.

Very lovely kitchen. It looks like a well-designed and efficient space so you must be thrilled.
We are in the beginning stages of the kitchen layout and have a layout similar to yours in mind. Would you mind letting us know the clearance between your island and counters? Also size of island? And how much space on either size of your sink?

Thx for the comments. I will try and answer some questions. The cabinets are done by a local business here in San Diego called RZ custom inc. They have both negative and positive reviews. I don't think their customer service is very good, but the finished product looks good... and they were able to do demo, install and tax for under 10k... which in southern california isnt too bad if a deal.

The LED lighting also comes from a local company, sold through a local business at 6th ave near university. I can look up the specifics tomorrow.

The floor tile its from Arizona tile...

Also the distance between the island and the wall cabs is larger than average.... i think its just over 4 ft... maybe 4.5ft. I will have to measure... the island is 39 inches wide with a 13 inch over-hang, and 92 inches long.

As for the overall length..... i think its only 16ft from the wall with the fridge to the end of the island.
