Lennox XP19-60 Heat Pump vs XPX19-060

I've got an opportunity to use a brand-new, but discontinued model of Lennox' 5-ton heat pump. The previous model, introduced in 2003 I believe, has a diagnostic panel, as does the new XP19 model. I'd be using this in conjunction with a 90,000 BTU, 95% AFUE, G71 furnace.

The XPX19 is more exposed to the elements, no casing around it (and it would be sheltered, so that's not a problem for me). Other than that, I thought it woud be exactly the same, performance-wise, but the specs listed in an older Lennox brochure say its SEER is "up to" 15.00 and the HSPF is "up to" 8.2. These are versus 16.50 and 8.75 for the XP19-060.

The sound rating on the XPX19 is 76 dB. I don't know what it is on the XP19.

The cooling BTUh is 57,500 on the XPX19. I don't know what it is on the XP19, but had assumed it would be 60,000.

Can anyone comment on why these figures might be different- and how important they may be. I'd have the same new product warranty on the discontinued model and think I can get a very good price break, but don't want to do it if there's something I may be missing in this equation....

i would ask this question....

what are the heating BTUs at 47 degree on the XPX19?

that HSPF of 8.25 is poor...

is the XPX19 a giveaway or just a reduced price?

Lennox heat pumps depending on configuration have poor performance numbers.

i would want a matching certificate from the dealer providing all relevant numbers giving SEER,EER,HSPF, cooling BTUs, heating BTUs @ 47 degree,etc with model/size of coil they intend to use

what about warranty?

Thanks for the quick reply. It's not a giveaway, but the XPX19 was offered for
$2500- $3000 less than the XP19. Do you know if there were changes from the
XPX19 to the XP19 (other than the changed outside casing)?

Oops - I meant to tell gary that I couldn't figure out the ARI directory. TD - thank you so much for the Bryant numbers I received an email from one of the companies saying that he had been in a class yesterday about Carrier's new Performance stat called the Edge. He said it was very impressive and therefore quoted me on: 3 ton performance heat pump 25HPA536H performance fan coil FV4ANF005 performance edge stat and outdoor sensor 9 kw auxiliary heat 10 parts and labor warranty $8056.00 If I want to still have the infinity fan coil and stat I'd have to add $504. It would be an addt'l $300 for a media filter series P102-MF. An additional $1200 for the Inifinity Air Purifier. So the lowest bid so far but still expensive. Soooooo here is a completely different scenario I'll throw out there. The instigating factor in all this was our yearly maintenance that showed the coil needs to be cleaned so it doesn't freeze up the system. They also have said each year they come out that they can't believe the thing is still working because of it's age (23 years). Would it be unwise to just pay the money to have the coil cleaned and just run the current system til it quits? I usually perfer to be proactive, but the thought of NOT having to kick out $9000+ right now sure sits well.

greg again, you are getting great equipment and if properly sized, installed, and if you have good ductwork(something very often overlooked-it should be inspected), you will be well satisfied. a couple of thoughts. I know dual fuel systems very well as I have one several yrs old. I also know Atlanta weather/climate very well as I live a couple of hrs up I-85 from Atlanta. This past heating season, I used apprx 60 therms of nat gas as my HP performed well over 95% of the burden for heating my home. Not much use for my var spd XV90 furnace. You can expect similar experience as well as usage. Of course, the weather will dictate your usage but Atlanta's average low winter temp is low 40s. my point is that you will rarely use your furnace in a dual fuel application except for the blower. also, with a straight HP system with var spd air handler and electric strip backup, you achieve improved operating eff over dual fuel. that is a fact. The main idea of dual fuel is to leverage your relatively inexpensive electric rate against the more expensive nat gas. But what's to leverage since you will rarely use nat gas? Dual fuel is simply overkill for your area. If I could go back, I would have purchased air handler over a var speed backup furnace. And I expect the gap between electric and nat gas pricing to only widen. now to your wife's concern about HP heating. 10 yrs ago, it would have been legitimate. With the equipment you are looking at, your wife will not know which source of heat is operating without checking the equipment itself. going back to your reply. 1.recip is OK, scroll preferred 2.sizing of HP is important, I want to see the load calcs in writing and I don't want to be borderline in Atlanta for cooling. 25% oversize is acceptable for HPs especially with the HW VP IAQ stat which has the "dehumidify on demand" feature. 3.answered above as to your wife's concern 4.good 5.good 6.good as far as the hot kitchen, I would add another supply or increase the size of existing supply(s). I would do it at time of your install. Why wait? No need to. How many supplies in kitchen now? Ask dealer to calculate load for kitchen vs current cooling CFMs to kitchen. If you add another supply, I would want it same as other. just a few thoughts that I hope will be helpful. IMO

shabruo first of all Rudd is the sister company to Rheem and is an often overlooked and underated brand. They make good HVAC and I like their HPs better than Lennox. I would not give up on Rudd simply because the dealer did not quote you correctly. these are my minimum specs for a new HP system. both outside and inside units should be replaced to have a properly matched system. 15 SEER, 12.5+ EER, 9 HSPF best matching VS air handler full BTUs in both cooling and heating for your rated size R-410a refrigerant(same as Puron) scroll compressor preferred electronic demand defrost preferred thermostat with "dehumidify on demand" feature staged backup heat strips new and correctly sized refrigerant lineset you want a thorough inspection of your ductwork system. size, overall condition, supply and return lines, insulation qualities, leak test, etc. any hot/cold spot issues in your home should be addressed. I would only use authorized dealers for the various brands that provide quotes. see mfg websites. I would look at Trane/AmStd,Rheem,Carrier/Bryant. I wouldn't do a thing until the dealers involved perform a load calc for correct sizing. If they refuse, show themm the door. I can't see the job from here but yes your pricing does seem on the high side. Of course installing ductwork in a retrofit where there is none usually is problematic. It is a mistake buying HVAC through a big box store. Depending on experience of dealer, zoning multilevel homes can be helpful with the overall comfort factor to the various parts of your home. IMO

mel first of all, the Trane system quoted is three ton, the Lennox system two ton. what size are you replacing? The XL15i comes in 1/2 ton increments, the XP19 only available in full ton increments. For superior humidity control, the best choice is HW VP IAQ. any heat strips should be staged for operating cost. I personally think the Trane XL15i is one of the best sgl stg HPs on the market and that two stg systems are overkill and unnecessary for most homeowner applications. I would want R8 insulation for new attic ductwork, both supply and return. let me know if you have any questions. IMO Good Luck!

can't answer specifically but it's got to be more than cosmetics and cabinetry and obviously the XP19 is Lennox top of line while the XPX is not. be wary and keep your eyes wide open on this unit.

The previous top-of-the-line model from Lennox was the HPXA19, so I can only imagine that is the model you would be getting.

It was never rated with the brand new G71, so you'd have to estimate using the G61V or similar, in which case the old engineering data shows about a 15 SEER / 7.6 HSPF rating - not very good, but it is two-stage so it may perform better depending on usage.

The current top-of-the-line Lennox XP19 only achieves a 16.15 and 8.10 with the furnace you specify and the best matched coil (CX34-62C), unless it is a downflow or horizontal install.

The major changes came with the cosmetics, but the new design also provides more surface area so there is more efficiency too. The $2500-3000 price difference is a lot, so it is an interesting option. It was rated at 75 dB, btw.

I'd be concerned about why this unit has been sitting around for 3-5 yrs. Get the serial number so you can verify the actual age. I'd call Lennox to make sure this wasn't pulled out of someone else's house and that the warranty is fully intact.

Followup to hvacsalesguy and tigerdunes--

Got a little more info. The previous model is an XPXA19-060 and is brand-new but manufactured in 2003. The warranty on parts/compressor is 5/10 instead of 10/10 with the XP19, but a third-party warranty could be added.

Please post if you have thoughts other that what you've already provided...efficiency would be a little lower than with the XP19, but
there is a substantial price break. So I just have to weigh all the variables.
