Looking for a really good 1.5 ton heat pump

Hello all,

I'm planning on building a 1,450 SF house up here in Massachusetts. According to the calcs, it looks like I'll need 16,000 btu of cooling and 17,000 btu of heating, which I guess corresponds to a 1.5 ton system.

Which companies make the most reliable and trouble-free heat pumps at this tonnage? Should I go with a ducted system or a ductless split system?

New home, I'd go all ducted without a doubt.

Most heat pump manufacturers make comparable units nowadays. I think Lennox, Rheem, Trane, Carrier, York are all fair brands to look into. Key is finding the best local co. to do your installation.

I think as long as you steer clear of builders grade systems and have the ductwork sized correctly and sealed you will have a very good life expectancy.

rheem,ruud,american std,trane,carrier,bryant all have good products overall but some spec out better than others and have better price points.

There are some options that are a must for comfort and performance/efficiency like : Demand defrost, txv, variable speed blower and good thermostat like the honeywell visionpro series preferably the IAQ or some manufacturers have excellent thermostats.

Tigerdunes has a very good list of specs to aim for which gives a very good bang for the buck on efficiency, comfort, and impact on the wallet now and every month you live in the home.

"Bad" power factor does NOT increase the REAL actual power consumed, "REAL" or actual power is measured in kW, that's all you use and that's what you're charged for. If device(CFL) uses 80% of the power going into it, the power factor is 80%. Power factor is the Real Power divided by the Apparent Power. For example, 98 kW (Real Power) ÷ 100 kVA (Apparent Power) = 98%. Again, residential customers are charged only for the REAL Power actually used, not the Apparent Power sent, That's not our problem, it is for the utility, believe me if it was a significant amount we would be billed a fee for power factor. Factories are billed for power factor,power factor does require the utility to compensate a little bit, it's at a far, far lower level than would be the case if they had to make up the total difference between the actual power factor and a power factor of 1.We can and do ignore the power factor issues in residential, there would be no way to diagnose anything if no rules applied or reality unable to be qualified. To prove this point, I set up an experiment with CFLs vs. incandescent lights (resistive loads with a power factor of 1.0), and measured watts and volt-amperes delivered by my inverter. Then I measured the amps from my power source, a bank of L-16 batteries, which are DC sources wise to the tricks of reactive power....The low power factor did not require the batteries (or the utility) to produce any extra energy.

2 units will give you redundancy (should one fail) and better control over heating/cooling the house evenly (if the units are installed logically). You would also have two units to maintain, however. You could consider a 2-stage zoned system, but I prefer two units over a single unit zoned when possible--zoning one unit must be done by a competent contractor if it is to work right. I'm also not a large proponent of 2-stage units unless the homeowner wants them for one reason or another. I can imagine two units would cost more because of installation requirements. While it is the way I'd go, ultimately it is your budget and your decision. If you do get one unit, make sure they balance the ductwork throughout the home to deliver proper heating/cooling throughout the entire home and/or install more than one zone. I personally have one single unit with no zones that does a great job, so really, it's the installation that matters.

That difference comes from the fact that industry standard is to size ductwork based on 0.1" per 100' of ductwork. This is based on rigid ductwork. Of course flex is more restrictive because the walls are not smooth. So you can ignore this fact (not good) or bump up the size of the flex runs. You can't hardly do scientific testing with flex duct. If you pull it nice and straight it will be nearly as good as metal duct. If it is installed loose with lots of bends the airflow drops quickly. So people come up with their own ideas based on experience or their opinions. Most people will just oversize the flex a little bit and everything works. Saying 14" is only good for 480 cfm is extreme. What does he want to install between the junction box and the unit? 24"?

Thanks, guys! Update: We finally called the bigger company from an adjoining town and to my delight they have four service technicians who live in my town AND the sales manager lives here also. So the worry I had about no or slow service after sale and the guilt I was feeling about taking our business elsewhere was allayed. They came in and did comprehensive tests and measurements to determine the system we need, redesigned the ductwork and air intakes and included a bigger air return for the new zones. We will have two filter cabinets for two air intakes (one on either side of the thing that houses the coil, am I saying that right?) and numerous improvements to the systems offered by the other contractors. The total is now $17,268, a whopping $4200 more than our other bid, but this price tag essentially buys a new system in almost every particular. And---their labor warranty is double the length of the other guys (two years instead of one). They include a one year service contract with the system and added our other, 3 ton heat pump for the new wing in that contract even though they didn't sell or install it. I know that is peanuts for them but it was a nice gesture that I appreciated and it wasn't a selling point--- they told me about it after we had already signed the contract. Work begins at 8 am on Thursday. :-) i sincerely appreciate the help and advice given on this forum. I learned a lot reading other people's questions and answers. If any of you have decorating questions that need input from an opinionated Southern homeowner I'll be happy to return the favor!

The installation is more important then the brand of equipment.

A well installed Goodman unit will give very good service.

A badly installed Trane, Carrier, or Rheem system can be a disaster.

If humidity is a concern, especially in the morning, I recommend a variable speed indoor blower and a humidistat. You set the humidity level and the blower will run on slow speed until the actual humidity level reaches your set level. Then it shifts to high speed. This is especially useful during the overnight, early morning hours when there's little heat load, but lots of humidity. I love mine and I know its working good cause here it is 4 am, and I hear it running slow, then kicks up to high just before the whole thing shuts off. Keep in mind, you can't just put some unreasonable humidity percent, or else it will NEVER run on high speed, even during the day, when you want max cooling.

Go with a ducted mini-split , single-zone fan coil type from Samsung. Nice alternative, variable - everything the Domestic Manufactures aspire to be.
