oopsie913 - I like the brick. It has a modern feel to it - not the old red brick of days past. Don't overthink it - I'm finding that going w/ my gut (first instinct) seems to be working best for me.

I think it's really beautiful! Sometimes, seeing something so different from what we're used to is jarring and hard to get comfortable with. Give yourself a few days and you'll love it just like you thought you would.

I love it! It reminds me of the brick walls you see in old industrial buildings that have been converted to modern living spaces. If you were going for urban/eclectic, you nailed it. Perfect!

Oopsie, I looked through your photos and saw some of the kitchen before the brick was installed. I very much prefer the photos with the brick.

It sounds like you have made dozens of design decisions in your remodel, and I think it is normal to second guess some. But truly, the end product is great, and you should be proud!

If you are worried that it looks too heavy, I suggest that you change out your undercabinet lighting. Brighter lighting will highlight the wonderful texture of the brick.

My only quibble about the brick is keeping it clean behind the cooktop.

Relax and get used to it. If you're still unsure in a few weeks, there are many things you could try short of ripping it out.

And FWIW, I'm seeing brick veneers now going into some very high end homes.

The important thing is if YOU like it. However, I have to say, it won't be a look that will be popular come resale time, and I think you're going to have a difficult time keeping it clean. If you're OK with the added maintainence, and don't give a hoot about resale, then embrace it!

My hunch is that you're ahead of the curve. (Just when everyone was pulling out their pickled wood cabinets, we began to see "cerused" furniture in the high-end market.) I think your brick is refreshingly different in a world of copycat kitchens.

I found this thread while searching for an old one that I had started, but it is gone!

Brick was the first element I knew I wanted in this renovation. Didn't know where, on the floor, backsplash, columns, and still haven't decided 100%, but I must say, yours is beautiful. It looks a lot like the brick in Paula Deen's backsplash, and I emailed her manager months ago to find out what/where she used, but he couldn't locate the source. Your pictures are small, but from just looking, they look a lot like hers.

I wouldn't regret what you've done for a minute.

I love it too. It reminds me of mine. I did stacked stone and love it. It is different as mine is. Maybe we will start a new trend! I searched and searched for pics of the stone i wanted but could find very few. It is sort of like Elizpiz's. her b-slash was my inspiration (thanks liz).

We have a brick backsplash behind our stove:

We're still under construction (though the range is functional and we do use it) so we don't have any long-term experience with brick as a backsplash. We live with a fair amount of this particular brick (Williamsburg hand molded) through the house, though, and it's well-sealed and indestructible, so I can't imagine it will perform any differently in this application-- I'm willing to bet we'll be very happy with it.

Design-wise, brick's a pretty strong statement. I think it works best when it has some type of architectural context, either because the house itself is brick, or it already has brick elements in it.

We have an old farmhouse, and we have the exact same brick on the floor of our back entryway, laundry room and powder room, and as surrounds around the fireplaces in our kitchen, family room and dining room. So the brick backsplash makes sense, and ties in with other brick in the kitchen and throughout the house.

If there weren't a ton of other brick in the house, though, I would have chosen a different material-- it would have looked odd on its own.

to Forboystoo, and lazygardens i haVE NOT HAD TO DO ONE THING FOR UPKEEP since we've had the walls up. I cant even imagine that there will be anything. ZERO upkeep at this point. And we are cooking a lot here. Honestly, when I had painted walls for backspash and white tile at another home, I was constantly cleaning or repainting the walls. It drove me nuts. Now it's just the stainless and the honed that I am fussing over only.

it looks great. if you really don't like it, you can always paint the brick. although what a shame that would be!
