Hi guys ! Update on tooth /face infection

I had my upper teeth removed on Wednesday December 30th like scheduled.

He asked me if i felt better having been on the amoxycillin . I said I felt it wasn't all gone.

After packing my mouth they asked if I had any questions. Duh ! In hindsight I could have written them down ....

I came home with a new prescription for amoxycillin and a row of 'running stitches'. and An appoinment for Jan. 11th for a checkup.

I felt ok though.

By Saturday both knotted ends of the stitches were loose, so much so that when I would wake up one end or the other would be hanging out of my mouth. accck ! Think hair in mouth constantly !

I called on Monday and they got me in and took the stitches out and gave me a different script for the infection. This one for Clindamycin. They felt it was still a little too icky in my face and eye socket.

So... overall except for the Clindamycin making me sooo sick to stomach , I feel rather good. Went in Monday for the check-up and they said that it is healing great ! Especially with me being diabetic. So, I now have an appointment in February for my post-op. They think the infection is gone. I am supposed to let them know if I get any tingling or pain in my face.

So ! YAY !!

BTW my brother called and asked me how I was doing and he told me 'Gee, in no time you'll be eating peanuts.'

I just had a root canal started and had been given 500mg Amoxicillin QâD for seven. It did not work and the infection came back. They called in one for Clindamycin. I never even heard of it! I did lots of reading up on it and whoa it sounds dangerous. Even the .gov site have severe warnings. I haven't picked it up yet because I am scared of it.

I did read that taking Saccharomyces Boulardii will help prevent the colitis associated with Clindamycin but I can't find it in any health food stores in my area and do not want to risk ordering online.

mad_about_mickey , how did you handle the side affect of the Clindamycen? Anyone else take this drug?

I don't want to ruin my body with the Clindamycen.

I agree that it may be from the really wet weather we had to start the year though some of that will depend on your soil and more importantly drainage (is it in an area where water pools and doesn't drain?). We also went from cloudy and somewhat cool temps (for Houston at least) to a lot of sun and heat the past few weeks which may be a factor. If your tree doesn't make it and you want to try another maple, I have a ton of shantung maple seedlings and could give you one (or more) for free.

My husband went to our family doctor and they said he had a sinus infection. This was around Thanksgiving of last year. We both then got the flu bug on top of his sinus infection and were sick until about the 2nd week in February. We didn't think we were ever going to get over the flu and the weakness (needless to say, we will be getting the flu shots this winter). Anyway, back to the sinus infection...sorry, I got off track. They gave him Z Pack for 5 days which was like taking candy for him. He was then put on an antibiotic...sorry, can't remember the name. He took two different prescriptions and went back to the family doctor and was given a third prescription. Wouldn't you think by now that none of this stuff is working? On top of this, he has high blood pressure & they keep pumping him with antibiotics that aren't working. He never got better and we went to an Ear, Nose & Throat doctor in the same building. This doctor told him that sometimes antibiotics won't work for sinus infections and my husband had to go back 2 times for shots in his hips. These were $150 a shot. He was also given a prescription nasal spray and in a week, he felt so much better. He said this was the best he had felt since Thanksgiving. Morale of the story: go see an ENT doctor if you think you have a sinus infection.

Awww thanks guys. Having a rough weekend and the kind words are much-needed boon right now. Aktillery I remember you going through something similar. Glad to hear you're happier on the other side as well! I loved my previous houses, but I love my new life even more. :) Jenny, he and I had mutual friends through work/networking. Worked in related fields, etc. I briefly tried the whole Match.com thing, and it was a colossal failure. (for me, anyway). What I found out was that I was perfectly capable of being happy and content on my own, and so many guys were ready to get married after 3 dates. ugh. Not my thing, though I've had friends who had great success with online dating. He and I are very similar in that we're fiercely independent, don't need (or want) to see each other every minute of the day, etc. Dazzleme, it's a royal pain. I've done in 2 houses now. I lay down large plastic sheets (in an empty room) and spray the ceiling in roughly 3ftx6ft sections, wait a few minutes, then use a drywall mud applicator to scrape it off. I just let it all fall to the floor, wrap up the plastic and throw it away, then re-texture and paint the ceiling. I "inherited" 7.5ft ceilings, so the shadows from the popcorn made it seem not only dated, but much shorter as well. urf.

Been doing a bit of thinking (and working) so haven't really had a chance to post. Davidro: Thanks again for the suggestion, but I'm not into the Silgranit or the drainage area. As far as I'm concerned, taking away counter space is a bad thing. As for the other things, I stood int he future stove area and there was plenty of space behind me for others to get by. I don't think thats an issue. Measured the fridge and will need to incorporate the dimensions into the layout. They're pretty close as they are now, probably a 1/4" here and there off. Opening my fridge to 90 degrees gives me access to pretty much everything easily. If I need to take drawers out (which I do like once a year now) I can either pull the fridge out or just remove some of the door storage shelves (they pop in and out easily). So, where I have it now is pretty good in terms of placement. I'm thinking of getting a 36" wide vent hood instead of the 30". i've been doing more reading and it seems like everyone is going 6" wider than the range/cooktop, especially with gas. Also, I'm thinking in the future, when this stove dies (hpefully not for a while) we'll get something a bit more high performance, but still 30" wide. Anyways, in order to get a 36" hood in, I need to switch the 24" cabinet to the left of the stove in the layout above to a 30" which is better for pots too. The cabinet on the left side of the stove will stay at 18". I'll have to rip my door trim down a bit, but oh well, can't have it all I suppose. So, I'll try to get my plan updated a bit although there aren't any huge changes at the moment. Still thinking about microwave placement. Have to do a rough layout for my laundry room as well. We're moving it from the main floor to the basement and the plumber that is coming to do the kitchen drains is going to do the laundry room rough in as well so need to get that planned out. They told me this was my last line of defense to try .If the infection comes back I will likely have to get IV antibiotics.

I ate yogurt(4 oz. homemade) everyday- sometimes more.
It seemed that like clockwork, I got nauseaus about 30 minutes after taking it. I ate 6 smaller meals rather than 3 so that there would always be something in my tummy.

I have not had the diarrhea they say can come with this medicine and keep my fingers crossed that I do not get it as they describe it. I plan to keep eating the yogurt.

I'm allergic to penicillin/amoxycillin, ets all those "cillins". I can take Erythomycin (sp?) for infections. It's a little hard on an empty stomach, but it works okay for me. Good luck MadaboutMickey!

Sometimes you need an antibiotic like Clindamycin.....if it works and the others don't, you have to weigh the risk vs benefit.

Thanks. That is what I am trying to do. I am so worried. I know it is one of the few that tackle anaerobic bacteria. I think they should do a culture first before just prescribing it. I don't know if that can be done with anaerobic bacteria though. I'm really afraid from what I have read. They say that 30% get a bad reaction and then it is one to Flagyl which I know is carcinogenic and has it's own side effects. Some people never recover from the Clindamycen and have to have a colostomy done.

I was hoping for some info on Saccharomyces Boulardii if anyone has any to share. It is a probiotic yeast.

Thank you mad_about_mickey for sharing about the yogurt. I knew about yogurt but I believe the homemade like you ate would be the better option than some store brand. I don't make it myself but have been getting a head start by eating it now in case I do decide I need the Clindamycen. I'm off to buy some Kifir tomorrow.

Best wishes for a good recovery mad_about_mickey. This stuff is not fun is it.

Flagyl is carcinogenic? Oh, great. When I had the shingles in October, I was prescribed Flagyl, along with something else, because they misdiagnosed what was wrong.

Best of luck to those of who are dealing with infection!

Dilly, I would think that if you only have to take it once (how ever long it would be perscribed for only this issue), that you wouldn't have to worry too much about the long term effects, but I haven't read up on it. Do you have a gnc store near you? If so, go ask them about the Saccharomyces Boulardii. If they don't have it, maybe they can order it for you.

Thanks tami but I've called around the health food stores in my area and they don't have it. I read about it online as a way to counter the side effects of Clindamycin. I don't even know if it works or not but I read good things about it.

Guys, this stuff sounds like poison. Read the discussion about it in the link below. There are other discussion boards about it. Some people reported that the side effects came after they stopped taking it and lasted years.

So far I know to help prevent side effects is to not lie down after taking it or it can come up and burn the throat, Probiotics may help. There most likely be projectile diarrhea occurring many times a day and maybe a blistering skin rash. I am relieved to hear that mad_about_mickey took it with no big problems.

***This antibiotic carries an FDA Black Box Warning on it. This antibiotic is to be taken as a "last resort" when others have failed. People can die from taking it.

Clindamycin is for for certain hard-to-treat infections, but it will also disrupt the ecology of the digestive tract. This allows the dangerous bacteria called Clostridium difficile to take over. C diff has developed resistance to common antibiotics and can be hard to cure hence the need for Flagyl which may or may not work to clear it up.

Google for more horror stories. Seriously you may want to read this stuff. You never know if you would suddenly get a tooth infection and be handed a prescription for this stuff. You want to be fully informed about it when discussing it with your doctor. I never heard of the Clindamycin before this and I try to keep myself well informed about general health care. I must have missed this in my readings.
