Removing bottle labels

A friend gave me a red wine bottle for my bottle tree. I removed the label on the back without any trouble, BUT the label on the front has been stubborn, the top of the label came off leaving its shadow on the bottle. Same size as the original label only white and stuck on. I have tried alcohol, toothpaste, vinegar and liquid detergent and nothing works. Ya'll have a solution for me?

I soak mine in hot water overnight.

Let it dry, saturate with Goo Gone, and let it sit for a while, then put liquid dish detergent on it and scrub with your fingernail, knife or whatever. Rinse in hot water.

The mixing instructions on the bottle ARE ADJUSTED for the different strength. The instructions do advise three times as much per gallon on the weaker version. My caution was to be careful not to go on autopilot when mixing. If I had both bottles on my shelf and ran out I might pick up the nest bottle and mix at the same rate I used on the previous. I would either wind up with a too weak solution which is worthless or one that or one that was too strong and could be dangerous. On other threads here some people were complaining that TRIAZICIDE was not working. Theories ran from "stale" to to "heat" damaged product. Maybe some of the people who were reporting poor results were mixing the .08% as if it was .25% and getting too weak a solution Mike

Gardencrazy, I rinse the empty jug with hot water, pull of the label while the water is inside, dump out the water, and immediately poke a knife point into the softened round indentation on the side of the jug. Then starting at the knife cut, I cut around the indented circle with a scissors. The plastic is still warm and very easy to cut then. (Don't know if jugs throughout the nation have the circles on them, if not, just cut a hole big enough to reach through) Toss about an inch of sand or soil into the bottom to keep the jug from blowing around and to protect the base from burning. Set a votive candle inside. Light and enjoy. Oh, and take the cover off or sometimes they overheat and begin to melt. We set out over 150 at a nearby nature center. Evening visitors followed the lights on a ten minute walk to a small cabin with a storyteller. It was a beautiful walk through a snowy pine forest on a crisp evening. I'll be putting a few out by my home on Christmas Eve. It is a neighborhood tradition. Many people went to the milk jugs after a few years of rain "melted" our paper bag luminaries or/and put out the candles. I'll try to get a photo next week when we have them lining the driveway.

Hi Robin, Depending on how many labels you need, it might be worth it to have them printed on a color laser printer on label (peel and stick) paper at a local copy shop. That would solve the bleed problem. Talk to the copy shop first to find out if they have the label paper and can color copy on to it, or if you can bring your own label paper and what kind (ink jet paper is NOT always compatable with laser copiers). Ask if they can print from a digital file, that will give you the best quality, and what file format they need. Or have your label stock laminated after it is printed on your ink jet. Nail polish remover?

Or Goo-Gone? That removes pretty much anything sticky.

Vegetable oil or olive oil usually works pretty good too. rub it on. If it soaks up, let it set for a while and add more. Usually, I do it overnight and can get it off by the next morning.

Use plain old cooking oil, then a razor blade. I use the razor thingy that I use on my glass top cook stove. :o)

Try peanut butter. Completely cover the label, let sit for at least 24 hours (I usually wait about 2 days). The label and all stickiness wipes right off.

WD-40 removes goo like magic. I remove labels all the time with no effort at all. Spray and wipe. Works great.

i have often wondered why someone couldn't sell glue to the public that worked as well as some of that label glue does!!

Acetone always works for me to remove those pesky labels from glass bottles.

Charlene, can you post a photo of your bottle tree?? I want to make one, also. I've never made one, but I know that they're very popular in the South. I think they're supposed to "ward off evil spirits"? I am intrigued by the idea of making one. Bettye/AZ

I have always used spray and wash or shout. Squirt the area well and let sit for about ten minutes. Should rub right off!

Brasso works, too, if you have that. I prefer Goo Gone because I like the smell.

I use WD-40 on my bottles (wine and colored bottles). I am shoving them into the dirt in my L shaped planter box around my patio. I am going to plant something around them, so just the tops (or bottoms...whichever end is up) show. Something that fills in around them.
