?wine bottle label

Hi

A friend is giving 8oz bottles of wine as favors for her mother's 70th birthday party. She asked me if I could make labels for the bottles. I'm reluctant to do it because I read that if you print them on ink jet printer they might bleed. Has anyone had any experience making wine labels? Is there a site where I could find a template? Would putting a coat of Modge Podge prevent the print from smudging?

Robin, I have made labels before and then covered them with a piece of clear contact paper.

Hi Robin,

Depending on how many labels you need, it might be worth it to have them printed on a color laser printer on label (peel and stick) paper at a local copy shop. That would solve the bleed problem. Talk to the copy shop first to find out if they have the label paper and can color copy on to it, or if you can bring your own label paper and what kind (ink jet paper is NOT always compatable with laser copiers). Ask if they can print from a digital file, that will give you the best quality, and what file format they need.

Or have your label stock laminated after it is printed on your ink jet. That should protect the labels.

I use WD-40 on my bottles (wine and colored bottles). I am shoving them into the dirt in my L shaped planter box around my patio. I am going to plant something around them, so just the tops (or bottoms...whichever end is up) show. Something that fills in around them.

My technique is to boil water and pour into the bottles (I originally thought I would need to soak in boiling water but surprisingly the "just pour in" technique works). Then wait like 1/2 hour to cool down, just long enough so you can touch it. If you're lucky the labels will peel off. If not, you might have to then use some kind of combination of googone and scraping with a razor blade. But I've had pretty good luck peeling on the pretty blue bottles.
