Another question about etiquette - but this is for a wedding

A good friend's 38-year-old son is getting married in Fall 2011. The wedding is being held in one of America's most expensive cities, more than 2,500 miles from my home. I don't want to sound cheap, but airline tickets for me and my husband plus hotel expense and other incidentals would probably run close to $2000 and time lost from work is also a big deal.

This sounds like a soap opera, but I swear it's real life. The other issue is, it's a same-sex marriage. Don't yell at me, but I feel that marriage is between a man and a woman, and while I'm truly happy that this man has found someone to love, and a life-time companion, I'm not a big fan of same-sex marriage.

I already told him that I'm happy for him and that I love him and would love to meet his new partner, and that I wish him all the best, but that it was hard for me to wrap my heart and mind around the idea of two men getting "married."

By the way, I did not volunteer this. He asked me over and over again what I thought about same-sex marriage. When I tried to softly voice my opinion, he became very upset and he said I was the modern equivalent of a 1950s southern racist. I told him that sometimes people need to "agree to disagree" and he would not accept this.

It's a mess. And I guess it's two issues: Money - which is a real issue - and my having mixed feelings about two men tying the knot.

Thanks in advance for help in sorting this out.
