If you rarely use heat, why are you getting gas furnaces with the a/c? Why don't you get a heat pump instead and nix the gas furnace? A heat pump is a central a/c system that can also provide heat by reversing the refrigerant flow thru the system. Your American Standard prices look good for 2 units. I would get at least 2 more quotes. FYI: Your true cooling costs (especially on hot summer days) are determined by the Energy Efficency Ratio (EER) and not SEER. Whichever SEER rating you get, you want a 12 EER minumum. In my opininion, a 14 or 15 SEER (12 EER) offers the best combination of purchase price and true operating costs. You could also think about 1 unit with a variable speed fan and the other with a fixed speed fan. This will save you at least $500 on the purchase. Good luck.

We already have a 2 speed 18seer unit and it works VERY well. Variable speed blowers were not yet mainstream when the unit was purchased. The furnace blower has 5 different speeds, 3 of which are used. 2 for the 2 stages of cooling, and a lower one for the furnace. I realize a bit of efficiency is lost over a variable speed blower but without an inverter driven variable speed compressor, there is not much advantage to the variable speed blower. They use fixed speed setpoints anyway for the two speed condensers. My question was with regard to configuring the system as a hybrid heat pump with gas furnace instead of straigh AC with gas furnace. Can anyone answer this? Most hybrid systems place the cooling coil upstream of the furnace heat exchanger so that both heat sources can be used at the same time, in my arrangement, it would have to be either gas or hp, never both. Is it worth the $200 difference in cost or is there something else I am overlooking?

Thanks Tigerdunes: Electricity use is as follows: First 1,000 kWh 6.778 â per kWh Over 1,000 kWh 7.500 â per kWh ( I use about 800 kwh without AC and 1300 Kwh with it) Propane: 2.69per gallon - usage in winter used to be approx 350-400 gallons per month! I agree that the mark ups for the Heat Pumps condensor are outrageous. The cheapest price I was quoted was $5310 for a Trane XB14 unit, or $5225 for RUUD. I started shopping in May, have had 4 contractors out here, and still see major issues with each contractor. The one I like the best is from Sky Heating, as he was the most thorough, and company got the best reviews. He had the lowest prices as well, but they are still about 3 times the wholesale cost. I have the money to pay for the more expensive systems, but I just can't find a good reason to do that. won't, on principle, as I feel they are purposefully marking them up. This kind of stuff happens to everyone, but seems to happen a bit more to single women ?!? (kind of a sexist comment, but I have noticed this to be true). Back to the subject at hand - I looked at QualitySmith.com for nationwide averages for installation on various Trane Heat Pumps - I compared it to the bids I received: Trane Installation costs (range nationwide) XR15:Install cost $4500-$10,000 (quote= $8100) XB14 Install cost = $3000-$7500 (qutoe was $5300) XB13 install cost =$2500-$6500 (quote was $6400) I noticed in another post that you were recommending a SEER 13 unit, but did not like the Trane XB13 (SEER 14-15) but not the Trane units. You specifically wrote that wrote that you would not get a Trane XB13. I was wondering if you liked any of the Trane models that I have listed? What Brands/models do you like that are SEER 13? Any suggestions for how to find a more competitive bid? Based on the information you've provided, sounds like the York quote is the best option, but I don't agree with the 80% modulating furnace. That's a high-end furnace, and going with the 80% version doesn't make sense to me, especially in our region where it can get cold at times (I'm in Maryland). Is PVC venting an issue? The York Affinity is a nice line of equipment. American Standard isn't bad, either, but the equipment that the York rep. is quoting is better in my opinion. 3 tons is a bit much for your cooling load, but it's what you'd have to go with if you went with the Affinity line. The 2.5-ton Latitude unit would be the better fit. With the low stage on the Affinity approximately meeting the cooling load at design conditions (which won't be met on all days), I don't think you'll be getting those long run times that you should with a 2-stage system. Ask the York rep. if he can quote the CZB or YZB 2.5-ton single-stage Affinity unit with a 90+ efficient v/s furnace (modulating or 2-stage). Not sure where the American Standard rep. came up with his sizing. Do you like it cold in your house (68-70)? Did the York rep. do the load calculation?
