Faux fireplaces (on TV)

You probably know already that I watch too much television.

Here's something that I've noticed. On the real-estate shows, if a homeowner has a faux fireplace, it's subjected to severe ridicule (and always removed). You get the impression that the Decorating Police might throw up a barricade to make sure that no one buys the house.

On the other hand, TWICE in the past week, stagers on these very same shows have put in faux fireplaces. One was the ordinary sort of freestanding fireplace in a traditional design; the other was a modern one that mounted on the wall. Both used gel fuel.

I have noticed that Candice Olson often installs faux fireplaces. She prefers gas fireplaces, but if that's not feasible, she uses electric. She usually builds them into cabinetry (often with her typical mirrors on either side and sconces on the mirrors, etc.).
