More fall clothes shopping

I am looking for thin crew neck or v neck sweaters that I can wear over blouses. Longer length, fine weave, trim fitting but not tight, preferably not with a large waist band that makes a blousy effect.

Everything I see is too short, too thick, too wide or too tight. Does anyone have a favorite sweater that fits the bill?

My go-to's for classic sweaters are J Crew or Banana Republic. Have you tried there?

Ann Taylor always sems have some crew neck or v-neck sweaters that aren't too wide, too tight or without a wide band. Good to check the above choices too (BR and J Crew). I don't care for LL Bean, Lands End anymore because they are too loose-fitting for my taste. Eddie Bauer sometimes has a few things but usually they are bulkier than I think you want.

Joanie- your best bet would be to go straight to a store that is just for swimsuits. Mostly all of their selections are separates and many lines have bra sizing. Yes they are pricey, but it's my summer splurge. If I'm going to be half naked in public, you bet my suit is going to fit and hold my parts in properly! IMHO spending extra on a couple of well made perfect fitting suits is a no-brainer (considering you take care of them, hand wash etc they can last for years). We have a store in a local mall that is called "everything but the water". Name speaks for itself! Unfortunately, I have no advice for the ones who "fear the fitting room germs". Unfortunately, I am petite and curvy (not overweight, but not ready to wear either) so have to try on everything, and have to get most things tailored. It is a fact of life for me! Thankfully I LOVE "the art" of shopping so have accepted the fact that it takes me some effort to get the look I want. I have many favorite places to shop but most are at least a 30 min+ drive, so usually plan a "shopping day" (not very often with 3 kids!). There are a couple of local boutiques which I love, and although one may think "stuck up" or "pushy" when it comes to boutique shopping, once the salesperson gets to know you and your style, they become like a personal shopper. Plus I get advance notice and first pick on their special sales! My place calls me when they think I might like something that just came in. There is no pressure on me to buy. 9 times out of 10 I just browse and may buy on that 10th visit. I too live on a budget, but make sure I put away for my "happy fund" when that occasional splurge is needed.

clink: this is good: "Never buy anything -- unless you can wear it with 3 other things in your wardrobe -- RIGHT NOW! Not later when you buy that pink shirt or the lime capris. "And learn your personality style for clothing." A few other things that have helped me: 1. Know what colors look best on you and don't even bother looking at clothes that aren't in those colors (the "Color Me Beautiful" philosophy). It saves me a lot of time when I'm shopping. This also makes it more likely that new clothes will go with clothes I already have. It's really true that if you wear colors that flatter, you don't need a lot of makeup or other enhancements, so that saves time and hassle as well. 2. If you find a basic item that fits well, if possible buy at least two of the same style. Especially pants, because they are so hard to find. 3. Don't bother shopping in stores that never seem to have what you want or need. I wear a size 18, so I've come to realize I'm happier going to stores that always carry the newest things in my size and where I don't have to search through every rack to find anything. So plus-size stores and places like Target get most of my business. Department stores are usually horrible. If I have a few hours available to shop and I go to one or two of the places where I have had success in the past and use the coupons they send me, I can usually come home with a few new outfits for less than $150. I probably do this 4 or 5 times a year. I'm also very good at returning things if, after I get them home, I realize I don't like them. I don't bother with thrift stores because they rarely have large sizes, and it's just not worth the effort. What really trips me up (ha) is finding shoes. I wear a size 12 now and tend to have problems unless I wear comfort-type shoes when I have to walk more than a little bit. I'm in a bit of a panic right now because I haven't found any good walking sandals for this summer yet. I have to spend at least $100 for a pair of shoes if they aren't on sale. I organize my closet by type from left to right: sleeveless tops, short-sleeved tops, long-sleeved tops, pants, skirts, and evening wear (I need this last category because I play in concerts regularly). Sweaters that need to be folded go on a shelf over the hanging rack. Shorts, T-shirts, nightwear, and such go in dresser drawers. DH and I share a pretty small walk-in closet that has a simple organizing system (left by the POs), and we seem to have room for all our clothes.

I am like Marilyn. I don't do dress up. I own one pair of gray pants but they are probably too big for me now since I lost a bit of weight since last year. I'm overweight,over 60, wear jeans and mens t shirts. Still get hit on all the time. Like Emma said, it's attitude. I walk into a room like I own it. Using Poor posture and stance is the most aging thing one can do. I learned my lesson years ago at an awards ceremony for a scout thing. I was in my late 30's. After shopping most of the afternoon I was practically in tears. I hate most women's fashion. I am short and they make me look old and frumpy. Don't even get me started ranting about those stupid looking hobbit pants. LOL So DH said to wear what I wanted and I did. I went in clean newish (not faded) jeans and a nice sweat shirt which were in style back then. When we got there there we a sat down at an empty table. Later all these men came in and sat with up. The whole room was either in uniform or dressed up. The women were all in dresses and jewelry and such. Guess who had the best time? ME!!! We talked sports, autos and guy stuff. I think had I been dressed girly they would have been more subdued. The guy next to me was tipsy and hilarious. Turned out the guys at our table were all the national head honchos. They had been partying earlier. Now had I worn a dress or dressy clothes I would have been so uncomfortable I would have been evil. My personality changes for the worse as the layers of "feminine" clothing go on. So I have learned to stay in my comfort zone. The heck with what others think. The church thing? How nice of those women to judge. Bless their brittle little hearts.

Look at the discount stores. When I needed some inseason clothes late in the season for the kids, I usually could find something at Ross, TJ Maxx or Marshalls. Sale racks can be godsends too. We bought the major part of DDs maternity wardrobe the weekend when she came home for the Fourth of July to announce she was 3 months pregnant. She needed long sleeves even for summers in San Francisco, so we hit all the sale racks. The maternity winter clothing, which is what she needed mostly for the cool city breezes, were slashed to single digit prices. We scored on lots (17) of tops, most of which were $5 each.

I think why you are having a problem is that wearing a sweater over a blouse is not popular.
Thin sweaters stand on their own. If you need to layer, I would try sweater sets, or long open style cardigans.

The Gap, Old Navy, Target~depends how much you want to spend. And I have to agree w/ellendi, it's just not popular right now, but if that's what you like, keep up the hunt. Cardigan's are all over the place. Target has them in every color, but I can't remember the price.

Outsideplaying, have you seen the latest Lands' End catalogue? I couldn't believe how stylish many of the items are!
I just ordered a jacket and boots and will probably order a few sweaters at some point.

Actually, cardigans are fine too. I guess I just need to hit more stores. We don't have too many choices around here - Target, one decent department store, TJ Maxx and a bunch of funky boutiques. I find that either the shape of a garment is dated or it doesn't fit well or the fabric is junky. I was hoping that someone could share a favorite style from a major retailer.

My go to place is Loft. (Ann Taylor is good for business attire, which I really don't need.)
I order most of my clothing online since the store has a very small petite department. After a while you get to know your size. I'm a medium in sweaters and tees but sometimes go down a size or two for a blouse.
If you order $125, shipping is free. I usually return things I don't want to the store. This way I see what's there as well.
If I have to reorder, I explain my disappointment, and most of the time I get the shipping for the replacement for free.
It might pay for you to make a day of it and go to the closest large mall. Macy's, Lord and Taylor, Gap, Banana, JCrew, JJill, and all the others. Go with an open mind and try on everything!

Deee, have you looked at Pemdleton online? I haven't seen this year's catalog but last year's had several lovely, lightweight (thin) sweaters in the styles you mention, perfect for layering. (I am a cardigan person myself and could open a shop with twinsets.)
