Major misstep or can this work???

Please help. I am deep in cabinet hardware he** and need to make a decision now (yesterday actually). I think I made a mistake when I put pewter colored insets into my cooktop backsplash. I liked the color and was thinking it would match the SS appliances, sink faucet and island lights that are "platinum dusk." Just got my lights today and platinum dusk is actually gold and black (more ORB looking than SS). Should the hardward match the lighting or the SS items? I was thinking that I was going to go with a rust or brownish toned hardware like the overall feel of the kitchen and house, but when IÂve looked at them at the house I am leaning toward wrought iron (black/silver). I keep thinking that they should be brown/black/bronze, so IÂm afraid to go with the cooler black/pewter hue, but that's what I thought looked best on site. I am on a very tight timeline and do not have the time to change the lighting choice or the insets, but am afraid I made mistake and donÂt know how to pull all this together. What finish do you think I should be choosing for the cabinet hardware?

Also, do you put the same hardware on the entire kitchen or do the island differently? Our island is cream painted/glazed and the other cabinets are medium tone stained alder. I've looked at a million pictures, but still can't get a good feel for what I should do with this.

(Don't know if this matters, but sink is cafe brown and granite is giallo ornamental.)

Overall kitchen - grout is not dry in this picture. It's not nearly this dark.

i think the rust brownish hardware will look good with ur pewter backsplash inserts.

the pewter will tie together ur stainless steel? won't it?

I've done it (DIY) in two houses. The most recent one was on the first floor, so that was super easy to do from the basement. The previous one was on the second floor, so we had to take the flooring up. As the two previous posters said, the location of the waste stack in relation to where you want the new toilet to be is the main issue. If it's further away than it was before, it may need a new vent. And if the new drain pipe can't run between floor joists, but must go through them, it'll be a lot more difficult... you'll need to put the hole in the correct to-code location in the joist while keeping the correct to-code pitch in the pipe: tricky! If you're running in the same joist bay it'll be a lot easier! You should be able to tell which way your joists go from the basement.

I'm doing it now and am in the 6th week....okay I have my good days and my bad days. How much of it will you do yourself? If it's just contracting and paying for it..I think you'll manage just fine...sure there'll be headaches but seek out a good contractor to handle most of them for you. I actually enjoy being the general contractor, I like that feeling of "yeah, I can do this!" Now, I've flooded two bathrooms...trying to hold your finger in pressurized water pvc pipes while your husband tries to find the cutoff at the street...not fun. Other than that, I've peeled of 3 rooms of wallpaper, I've pulled up linoleum and have tiled two rooms (one I had help with)....I've painted 3 rooms...I designed and paid my cousin to frame 1100 unfinished square footage...I've lined up my subs to finish out that part...I gutted the kitchen and am installing new flooring in every single room of the house...I'm bringing in 3 cows from a neighbor to help manage the pastures on this dream horse farm I bought...because I don't have time to buy the horses yet while I'm fixing this house up...so instead of gazing dreamingly out my breakfast window with my built in seating (still being built) and seeing my horses lovingly eating pasture..I'll see 3 contented cows. Yeah, it's a struggle sometimes....I got home at 9:30..spent all day running around finding a vanity getting a better deal on a granite top for it....picking out yet another gallon of paint to try...putting grout down over my tiles that look unusually orange when they were taupe at the showroom...darn those compact flourescents! There's always something to do...you may not have time to do it...but in 6 months, you'll know that this place is yours and the memories from building it with your dh will be there to amuse you. We joke that our house has been baptized twice (those floods were not fun, but we've got the cleanest duct work and subflooring now) Enjoy and have a sense of humor!:) Tara

I’m late on this but as a person who has rented, I get what Tori is saying, and I also agree with the majority of the people on this thread. Here’s my 2 cents and I may have missed something because I didn’t read every single reply. 1) wondering if the landlord would let you paint the cabinets? 2) if that is a no, it looks like your counter tops are black, and your appliance, do the kitchen walls in a nice crisp white, maybe get a large rung that has some black and white in it and do all your kitchen decor items in black and white. Maybe a fun graphic rug, check Overstock. Do black and white wall art. Utilize those white shelves above for more decor, books etc. 3) in the bathroom, same idea but maybe have more fun and maybe do a temp wall paper that embraced the color...maybe do palm leaves. Check the Tempaper website and also Amazon and Target sell that brand, It works beautifully and no damage when it comes off. Cover the floor with a rug if you can. 4) Don’t paint the walls in the rest of the house white it makes all the wood more pronounced. Check Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter, it makes the wood not so glaring. See if you can paint the chair rail and molding if possible :-). 5) Put sisal rugs everywhere you can to cover the carpet, check Overstock again. Do a beige border. 6) Get rid of those window treatments and do some nice grommet drapery from Target. Put it up as high as you can and have it just graze the floor. Don’t have it inches above the floor. I hope some of that helps since you are already moved in :-).

what is your native soil ... does it drain sharply ... if so.. you can HEAL THE POTS IN ... i would put them in shade ... as pots in sun.. can make the roots very hot.. and roots dont like that ... that heat can also lead to watering issues... if you are going to plant them in fall.. for sure... then why stress them now by repotting.. and then again when you plant them?? pull them out of the pot.. and look at what the roots look like.. if they are very bad.. winding.. the do root surgery and repot... ken ps: i should NOT have to look up what a major wheeler is... to answer your question.. and it would have helped a lot if you told us or gave us a pic of how big the pot was ... if you want good answers.. you have to provide good info

I don't think the colour and finish of your hardware and fixtures should be exactly the same - it looks too contrived. The style of the hardware and fittings should be congruent - i.e.: you don't want a cutting edge modern faucet with olde worlde pulls.. But a little variation is a good thing. Better that it works properly with whatever it's attached to.

Photos with the hardware and lights would help, but they don't need to match. I have stainless appliances, one brushed nickel faucet and one polished chrome (on different countertops), brushed chrome hardware and a black with gurnished gold accent light over the island. I have wrought iron over the kitchen window and aged brass in the breakfast room that I didn't want to change, so we worked to pull them together and it all works. Another silver toned fixture over the island would be too much.

First, I should warn you that my opinions usually swim against the tide, but here's mine for what it's worth . . .
I think you should definately go with some variation of silver for your hardware. The backsplash is beautiful and I think the accents are fab. I totally understand why you would choose dark hardware, but I think you'll get a lot more "POP" from something that connects the cabinets with the backsplash--especially since your cabinets are dark.

If you choose something with a brown or black town, you won't have as much contrast with the cabinets. Something with a bit of silver will give you a much more dynamic look. I think your instinct to go with one of the wrought iron finishes that has a silver-tone to it is right on the mark. Not only will it tie in the pewter, but it will also give you an old-world look.
If you have time, get a couple pulls in various finishes and try them to see what seems to give you the look you desire. I chose rustic bronze pulls, only to find realize that the look was boring and dowdy. Switched them out for big oversized black hardware. HOWEVER, I tried about 10 handles before I found the one that was just right. There are a number of sellers on EBAY who offer a variety of hardware at great prices. In any event, I suggest you try before you buy no matter what you choose. Hardware isn't cheap, it's important to get the one that will really work for you!

There is your answer! And similar to what I have in my kitchen. :) -- similar cabinet color, black-pewter hardware, SS appliances, with dark goldish-silver lighting. Your tile accents are a terrific tie-in.
