Yes, I got a huge chuckle out of the last picture!! Sounds like something I'd do. But I have to say that I admire your efforts. I've never made socks, not even an attempt. Separately, they looked just fine to me.

I have knitted and crochet a lot of stuff but never socks and don't plan to try. I have made slippers tho.No, think I'll go back to my afghans and such. I think I will make DH a cardigan again soon. Your finished product was real good.

LOL I have still not tried socks got a awesome book but have to find a day or 2 when I am home and Moni has a day or 2 and I am going to get HANDS on help....she promised okay she promised a day but I am a slow learner.....LOL I am proud you tried...I need to finish a afagan I started almost done and have the yarn for my next.....maybe next week....gosh don't have but like 20 rows to do could have it done in no time...Stacy

Hey!They look pretty good for a first attempt.
I've knit hundreds of pairs,and I assure you that my first attempt didn't look half as nice as those.
If I remember,I cast on the band too tight and nobody could get them on their feet.LOL

I think you did a great job Judy! My first toe up sock doesn't have a mate lol, it wouldn't go on over my heel.

I like knitting socks but I kind of wish I hadn't let DH know I can make them it's all he wears and he thinks every pair I make are for him. ;0)

The balls look very even...a nicely matched pair. I can't tell them apart!!!

Way to go for giving socks a try....I bet you learned alot of patience....maybe even a few new /old words came flying out as well!

that's exactly why I've never knitted...i'da kept them for a laugh though!

I am a bit intriqued about how cool the start of the "Toe-Up" one worked out. That does make a very nice toe, and you can try it on as you go. That is why it turned out the right length.

It's a good thing my having socks to wear is not dependant on my abillity to make them!

My cousin has been knitting socks from alpaca yarn all winter. I'll bet those are warm.

Judy I dont think they are bad at all who is going to see them under your long pants anyway..
Just so you can get them on and off is all that matters....

Not bad for a first attempt, and not being able to read the pattern LOL!

After the first one or two pairs that almost killed me, I now find that socks are no longer difficult and the instructions don't seem like secret code anymore ;).

I have only tried toe up twice, and both times ravelled and started over because I didn't like the fit. I am good at grafting (kitchener stitch) and don't mind doing it, so a bit of sewing at the toe doesn't bother me for doing top-down socks. My biggest problem is avoiding a hole at the gusset join.

Don't be afraid to try again, and you may be surprised that they aren't that bad after all!

You did a nice job for someone who has never done it before and also does not read patterns. I am experimenting with socks myself. I find they tend to come out too big, but I have turned baby socks into booties with a row of eyelet at the base of the ribbing that I can weave a tie of chained yarn through. Try little ones for baby booties. They are fun and you can use all sorts of colors.

As Imabest said, they're under your long pants so who is going to know. lol

Reminds me of something my son told me one day as he was putting on some tube socks (not homemade BTW) with different colored stripes and I said 'those don't even match' and he replied 'they do too, both are the same length!' lol.

Hey! Did you guys notice the color! That color will show up under any length pants. It's almost neon! The yarn was left over from a scarf, hat and mittens set.

I'm with Dances on this one Judy, and the rest of you - just keep making socks and the "Seems like Greek to me" instructions suddenly become clear, I don't even use a pattern anymore I can do socks in my head now lol.

Judy, good try, keep trying! When we finally get that direction, we'll work on heels together. They really aren't that hard. Don't read anything into the instructions, JUST DO EXACTLY WHAT IT SAYS! If you think about it instead of just doing it, that's when you get confused. I haven't tried the toe up, that's next.

Dances and Zipper are right. Once you master socks, it becomes addictive!

I have to say, that hand knitted socks do NOT look comfy. I don't think I'd want to do any kind of walking in them.

Great job for a first try. This coming from someone that has only knitted a carriage blanket. LOL
My mother was an awsome knitter I'm told. My Dad wore argyle socks that she made for him for years after her death. I still have and wear several sweaters that she made over 54 years ago.

All this talk about socks and knitting inspired me to locate a yarn shop and inquire about classes. The first class is three hours for $35. It's Monday afternoon. One of the benefits of being self employed. LOL I'm going to try and get a spot tomorrow.
