Dee, I have some good news for you: The yarn created the Fair Isle pattern automatically! Barbara was thrilled to find such magical wool. She bought it at a knitting shop. Maybe you can find it, too.

The top pair is probably the self-striping yarn that is on the market now. It makes that pattern as you knit.

Barbara is very talented. Yes, I enjoy knitting, especially socks. A gift of hand-knit socks is really special. I surprised my sister with a pair, and she was so pleased.

I do knit, and I know that she did a great job on those.

It's not easy to do, unless you've had a lot of practice, or are exceptionally bright. She's very talented.

She is quite creative. Pretty socks. You will be the envy of your friends.

I knit and crochet, but just don't have the patience it takes to knit a pair of socks. Lucky you.

Thanks for the info Alisande. I'll see if I can find a yarn shop somewhere around here. I'd love to try the socks. Haven't done 4 needle work in quite some time, but probably can still do it.

In 1978, while waiting for our house to be built, we rented for the winter. The couple who managed the apartments knitted slippers for the nursing homes and gifted me with a pair. I am still wearing them 30 years later and I can't tell you how many times they've gone through the washer/dryer. I wuv my slipper--not pretty, but so cozy.

all i can say is WOW! i can crochet know one i know knows how to knit, and id love to learn, i tried the socks by crochet last year...hummph lets just say my feets need to be ..adjusted lol plus they werent pretty lol

I have knitted several Christmas stockings, though it's been awhile. Turning the heel and finishing the toe are difficult tasks, and those socks are very nicely done. The plate and painting are pretty too -- Barbara is a talented lady!

Oh, gosh, how pretty. And....they're even SHAPED like socks, too!!! LOL (I've seen several badly done ones that almost had to have labels on them!)

Your Cousin did a wonderful job! The heels look great as do the toes and I love the yarn she used in both. They will keep your feet warm and they will wash and dry well. The yarns that are available now are so fun...they keep you interested.

Great socks! Yes the top pair is done with the self striping yarn. She did a great job. I am wearing a pair I made right now, and so is DH! We are in the motor home in New Hampshire right now and it's supposed to be 36 tonight and 30 tomorrow night, I think we are going to be glad I made & brought them!

Dee, do a google search for yarn shops in your state. If you can't find one, go to knitpicks.com and you can get some really inexpensive. I have made one pair from thier yarn. DSIL bought some before her stroke and gave it all to me because she can't do it since then. Only stipulation was that I make my brother a pair from it.

Justlinda, if you can knit, you can knit socks. The simple pattern I use, I can now knit without thinking about, except for at the heel, and that only takes a couple of minutes for me to think about. If I do a more complicated pattern, of course it takes patience. I knit a lot of socks while DH drives. If I can do that, you know it is easy, because if I have to look at someting while riding, I get car sick!

Hmmm, maybe Moni and I need to get together and have a sock teaching get together! Moni knits better than I do. But I think she has had more practice, cause she learned before I did.

I have to agree that knitting socks is not difficult. However, though I have a few patterns, I don't know which would fit me best. Either I give socks away or I rip them out because they turned out too big. This winter I want to thrum some slipper or bed socks for the only child who lives in a cold climate.

Years ago, when I was heavily into knitting, I made a pair of lovely red socks. They were too small for me, so I gave them to dear stepdaughter. They were her birthing socks for all three boys. I hope she still has them.

Sheila, I use Ann Norling's basic sock pattern for almost all my socks. I almost have it memorized! I believe it says to cast on 64 sts on size 3 needles for a basic adult sock. I use 72 sts for DH & I (decreasing to 64 at the ankle for me, I am fluffy!) on size 2 needles. That is using sock weight yarn. You can get some lovely sock yarn made from soy or crab, ect that would be perfect for you CA weather! Give it another try.

Nan_nc, give it another try. If they were only a little too small, try a bigger needle size. Or add just a few more sts if it isn't a patterned pattern.

If you use the majic loop method of knitting socks on one long circular needle, it makes it easy to slide the sock onto the cable and try them on to see how the fit around the cuff is. You could also knit a few inches and put the sts on scrap yarn to try them on. That will give you an idea of how they will fit so you can adjust needle sizes before you get to far.
