I am so sick of looking at this yarn, but my grandson sure loves his socks and wants me to make lots more for him.

Yes, Sue, it's self striping. And no matter how well I tried to match it up, it had a mind of it's own. But they turned out alright. I've recently purchased several colors of hand dyed sock yarn on ebay, so I'll have plenty of practice trying to get it right.

Hi everyone, HOORAY!!!!! The STEELERS brought home one for the thumb! Thanks Semper! You are so wonderful to do this for all us ponders. It was great fun! And thank you for the win. I asked Semper to donate my winnings to The National Aviary right here in Pittsburgh, PA. It is a wonderful place that is close to my heart. Here is a pic of the Bald Eagles that reside there. Notice the one flapping only has one wing. Poor thing had been shot by some @#$&*!*....... And this is a picture of me the last time I was there..... Thanks for helping take care of the birds Semper. Hello Everyone, Hi HUnter!!! I know how it is on the Palm forum!!! LOL That is another "love" that i have... but i cant plant any more in the yard. Containers is a different story!!! : ) I just picked up a Christmas Palm and a Pigmy Date Palm at a local stand ..i couldnt pass them up!!! Glad you are having a great time with the Palms and the Plumeria... You are so lucky to have this interest at such an early age...BRAVO!!! Keep up the good work, i know some people dont understand the excitement of seeing a seedling, but as you know i do understand!!! Dont let anyone discourage you from the joy that you find in your success!!! My favorite? Oh MY!!!! LOL... that is a very hard question.. This summer my over all favorite is the Lani!!! The beauty of this tree has been such a joy!!! The Black Tiger has been close to the top as well!!! The deep color of this red is impressive. Last summer i really enjoyed Daisy Wilcox..the beauty of the blooms were amazing as well as the scent!! Very fragrant. OK..now you have me thinking of another favorite... Elizabeth Thorton Lemon Drop!!! this is another must have. With the cold approaching up your way, yes...take them inside. I dont let them see temps drop below 45* Some let them go lower, but i watch the lows forcasted and i will bring them all inside when the te,ps start to drop here in VB. I think i have a few more weeks left. We are having an cold spell here, but i think the temps will bounce back to normal. I have left them alone. You are in Ohio, so you need to bring them in. They will go dormant and will drop their leaves. You can let them just relax during the winter, but dont forget to water just a little. It is hard the first winter when they go dormant with the needs of water. Just remember even thought they are dormant, they do have their needs...water very sparingly. The tree that i sent to you is potted in Al's Gritty Mix and needs more water then the average mix. This mix is very fast draining and will need to be watered a little more. You want to keep it alive even while it is sleeping. It really depends how you store them . Send me an e,mail and i will help you with the needs of your trees... Keep up the good work Hunter.. Hope school is going well for you!!! Those Foxtail seedlings look great BTW!!!! The palms have been in the ground for about 17 years. They have been fun to grow and do make my day when i come home and see Palms here in VB. I planted them when very few would even think about growing Cold hardy Palms in my area. You can get sock yarn on-line thru Joann.com. They sell Lion Brand "magicstripes" and Paton's Kroy Sox Yarn and Bernat sock yarn. You can usually get a pair of socks from one skein for about $8-9 dollars a pair. You can also find all kinds of information on sock yarn and patterns by doing a search on "knitting socks". I tried the pattern put out with the Lion Brand Magicstripes yarn.I had no problems following the directions and actually turned the heel the first time thru the directions, the biggest thing I was afraid to do with socks. So, as someone else here on this forum said, "just slowly follow the directions and you should have no trouble". I never finished the toe as the sock was huge, so that's a part I don't know yet. I had already gone down from size 3 to size 2 needles before starting the sock but it was still too big, so I pulled it all out and went to size 1 needles. Have just reached the beginning of the heel and so far it looks ok size wise(adult medium size). I like watching the pattern made by the striping yarn and the wool in the yarn makes it very comfortable to work with. I enjoy doing it. I have already gotten more sock yarn for future knitting. Good luck - I hope you like sock knitting too.

I got the yarn from LittleKnits.com - at $3.50 a skein, it was a very good deal, in my opinion. I don't have a blog, but I try to post photos occasionally. Thanks for all the compliments everyone. Right now I am knitting the world's most boring socks for my husband. He says no loud colors, so I am using "naked" wool, very fine, and no fancy stitches. But I promised to make them for him, so I just have to grin and bear it, then I can make some more fun ones for me. I've got three colors waiting on the shelf.

Those are adorable! I don't think the stripes need to match.... after all, tigers don't share the same stripe pattern. :-)

I love those socks. If you are looking for a neat product to make the soles of any knit socks non-skid, try GRiPPiES (http://www.grippiesonline.com), their iron ons work great on handmade socks and make a nice safe non skid sole.

Donna, he socks look great! If I remember right, the tiger yarn comes in a 100 gram ball, right? The way I get my self striping socks to match is to use a kitchen scale and a ball winder. Weight the skein first. Wind about half of it and weigh it again, until you have equal amts. I then re-wind the rest of it. I start both socks at the same time so I can match the ends of the yarn and start them at the same place. They come out VERY close. If I can remember tomorrow, I'll post a pic of the ones I am working on now. It's the self striping red white and blue. You will probably have to wind about a quarter size ball from one of them to get to a place that matches, but if necessary, you can use that at the toe if you run short. It's to late tonight for me to take a pic and post it. I can hardly keep my eyes open now.

Great job and picture, Donna. So cute. I love making baby boy booties from self striping sock yarn. It is so cute on them, and you can treat several babies from one ball of yarn.

I notice the colors for baby boys at the fancy "shoppes" are tan, navy or other blues, and red. Can't go wrong with any of those colors. I have also noticed that a lot of moms of little boys don't like all the pastels, though I do. So the sock yarn booties are perfect for them.
