BM Quiet Moments or anything pale yellow. Of course, an orangey mango type color looks great with walnut but won't be light enough for you.

I agree! I find something I like at the store, buy a sample, get it home and test and it only to find out it's all wrong. I'm trying to find a yellow I like and its really quite difficult. Everything I bring home is just the wrong shade. And I'm sort of embarrassed to admit to how many samples I've tried so far.

Our cabinets went in this week and I couldn't find the right color before they did, so now we have to tape off in order to paint. Not the ideal way to do it, but it's just the way it is.

Hi All! y advice is to stick with the colors you love! Blue and brown is fine, you just have to find the right balance.

You should focus on doing what's called a complementary color scheme. That's where you use two different colors from both ends of the color spectrum.

Use the blue (try different shades) as the main color and the brown for trim or smaller surface areas. I think you'll really like the outcome!

Okay, color gurus, how do you account for blacks, grays, whites, creams, beiges in the color wheel theory? And metallic finishes--how do they fit in?

These so-called neutrals and accents are the bugaboo of my decor schemes.

I want to use two odd reds (mahogany maroon and "burnt terracotta"), a number of silvers to grays to mauves, lots of med to light oak tones, and graywhites and ivories. A patterned carpet is the most reliable resource I have to work from. Where can I learn more about how these work together?

I try on other "shoes" in paint chips and fabric swatches but I keep coming back to these. There are four gray paint samples staring at me as I type.

the gray scale runs from white to black. that's not on the color wheel.

Gross generalizations: cream is white with a little yellow (usually), and beige is a pale version of orange.

There are endless variations.

Metallics are separate as they are not colors on the wheel either though they fall into general tones.

For most, color schemes work best with 3 colors or it gets more difficult. If working with a carpet, easiest to pick a neutral as the main color and then 2 accents.

I did yellow with a white kitchen and we had to repaint -- went green in that kitchen, but at that point it was for resale not us. My walls in the kitchen are about the color of coffee ice cream - maybe a shade darker. It wound up being changed from the nearest color chip we found, so it's a custom mix. You can also find a shirt, a book cover -- anything you like the color of and have them shoot it to recreate the color. That color carries into my breakfast room and then into the family room where it has a chair rail and is navy blue below the rail. That's one of the reasons the wall of tall blue cabinets on the opposite end of kitchen really worked for us.

I have a lot of blue in my house, wall colors, plates, rugs, etc. I even have a blue car. Having said that I would caution you about painting your walls blue, particularly a light blue. Blues can be very tricky to match or get to go together and for the most part there is not a lot of blue out there to decorate with. Fabrics and window treatments are difficult to find in a range of blues. Also, unless you use a more saturated or a darker blue, the wall color can come off as cold. If you haven't been testing big swatches on the wall you could be in for a surprise.

Playing off the 3 color suggestion above maybe you could try a lighter brown or tan for the walls, a neutral that goes with whatever you've got now for furniture and then doing accents with the browns and blues. Your cabs and counters should look great with almost any color so you have a lot of flexibility.

If you are painting yourself you could wait until after the counters are in. You could put some test colors up now and make the final decision once you feel more confident about it.

Light blues are especially tough for wall paint -- don't know why, but they tend to go lavender, grey, even green -- or look too baby blue or dainty or delicate or boring. I remixed the paint for my little laundry room so many times, and I was still less than thrilled with the result. I want to change out the cabinets in there now and when I do, I'll repaint -- just not sure what.

I have a medium deep blue in my dining room and the half wall of navy in my family room and those were not hard at all, but pale blue? About the toughest color I've ever dealt with.

If you are looking for a yellow--I am delighted with BM Honeymoon. It is a warm color--not too yellow, but mellow and in evening light it bounces almost apricot in my kitchen.

Pale blues are difficult because of the undertone. Can be violet, green, gray etc. and if muted, look different depending on what's near/next to them, lightbulb color, natural light. I have a pale blue living room that was incredibly tough to get as it had to blend with 3 other pale blues in upholstery.

My kitchen hutch is a pale blue but in an ivory kitchen looks greener than it might with another wall color -- it's a visual mix.

If you want pale blue, you need to check out the colors from the grey palette.

My solution for shoe shopping is just to buy multiple pairs when I like more then one! Don't know how that would work with paing. I was looking for a pale blue for our bedroom and went with BM Silver Cloud

I played with this thing for a couple of hours. I wanted yellow but trying the yellows realized yellow didn't do anything for my cabinets. I ended up with the caramel or taupe shades. Still have not committed to a color but this sure makes it easier to know what direction to go or not go.

Ok, so after reading the responses I've decided to go with a light buttercream yellow.

Finding the correct shade is proving to be really difficult. There's no way I'll be able to paint before the cabinets go in, I missed my deadline for that so now I'll have to do it after and tape everything off. I guess that's what I get for waffling so much!

If anyone has a nice soft, buttercream yellow shade they're happy with please let me know!

I've played on the visualizer but haven't really found the correct shade there. Maybe I'm just not looking at the right squares...

Forgot to add, that after deciding on the yellow, I won't be painting the living room two shades darker. I'm going to have to go with something totally different...I'm not even going to touch that topic yet! Having enough trouble with the kitchen color!

You might look at Farrow and Ball House White. It can be color-matched. I used it in my kitchen . It might work for you.

I thought F&B colors really coulddn't be color-matched exactly? Am I wrong?
