Is shoe moulding required/desired?
Comments (18)Thank you all for you input. It sounds like this is MOSTLY a personal preference, but here is my follow up question. My GC is advocating the shoe moulding for the following reason. Our site finished hardwood floors were installed and then the base boards installed over them. Right now, the base boards look wonderful with no gaps between the base board and floor. However, our GC says that in the future, when we sand down and refinished the floors, there will be a gap which will become more pronounced each time the floor is refinished. The advantage to having the shoe moulding is it can be removed, the floors sanded and refinished and then the shoe moulding is put back on, but set a little lower. I suppose the shoe moulding could be added at a later date if the floors are refinished, but for those of you who have site finished hardwoods and no shoe moulding, how do you plan to handle this? TIA again for your input! Jaymie...See Moreinviting guests to take off shoes (for comfort, not as a rule)
Comments (4)What to do here sort of depends on the formality or casualness of the gathering. And it depends on how comfortable you are with the people you've invited. I like to pad around my house barefoot. But when I have people over, I usually wear shoes, just because I know everyone else will be and I'd feel weird if I didn't. But the situation like you've described sounds very casual: gather round the TV, kick off your shoes, make yourself at home, watch a movie. So you could approach it two different ways. You could just be barefoot before everyone arrives and then let people know that it's ok to keep shoes on or off, whatever makes them comfortable. OR you can keep your shoes on till everyone's situated in front of the TV, then kick off your shoes and say, Hey, everyone's welcome to kick off their shoes too. Either way, some probably will go barefoot, some won't. This of course assumes that you're fairly comfortable with these people, that you know them at least fairly well. If these are people you don't know, or don't feel pretty comfortable around, you might be better off just keeping shoes on. Example: if the friends are all your buddies and their significant others who gather often and all know each other well, then shoes off ok. If this is your girlfriend and her parents who you're meeting for the first time, shoes on. At least till you get to know them better and see how formal/casual they like things. So, based on how well you know the friends, AND the formality of the event (I wouldn't kick off my shoes at a dinner party for example), use your judgement. I've definitely gone the barefoot route before, especially in small gatherings of close friends for a casual event....See Morehow do you teach a child to...
Comments (9)It's ok if nothing comes out sometimes. Blowing too hard can cause problems with infections when the nose is stuffy. Imitation works well sometimes to teach nose blowing. If you get a tissue and take a deep breath (exagerate the actions you take), and blow out through your nose. The shoe tying with the two loops works pretty well sometimes. Like other skills though, lots of practical repetition and support for learning is needed. Young children don't always have a good attention span or short term memory. It's a challenge to get in the required practice sometimes. It's the positive support and repetition that will work the magic. Eventually, you'll probably notice something has 'changed' and then realize that you're not spending time teaching this process anymore (yet your daughter's shoelaces always seem to be tied). There can be genetic reasons people are susceptible to sinus infections. Some involve the picky aspects of mucous composition (some people have thicker than usual mucuous, but less of it for example). Some may involve the structure of the sinus drainage areas. Allergies can tend to increase a person's levels of 'fluid' in and around the sinuses and ears. In some, but not all cases decongestants or antihistamines can be helpful to keep things more dry. It might be worth talking about what could be going on with a pediatrician. it is possible to overblow though so be careful about instructions to blow harder when the nose is stuffed up and nothing comes out...See MoreBase and shoe - colonial door stop?
Comments (5)I think with the 5-1/4" I would still prefer the quarter round. You want to reinforce the height of the taller base and the uninterrupted flat plane between the quarter round and the profile at the top of the base is the way to do it. The stop starts to bisect this height a bit. The building I used to live in did something like you describe, but starting at the 7-8" height of base. (The building had 14" base, 10" base, 8" base and 5-6" base as one ascended, to correspond with ceiling heights and the 5-6" was paired only with quarter round....See Morebrutuses
