help diagnosing thermostat problem

Hey... neither my heater nor my AC will turn on as of a few weeks ago. I've checked all the fuses (main box, breaker on the furnace, breaker outside at the compressor), and replaced the batteries in the thermostat. The thermostat appears to be working correctly, it is digital, and displays the correct temperature and the temperature I want the house to be... but nothing happens...

can you help me diagnose this issue? I guess the problem could be a faulty thermostat, faulty wiring between the thermostat and the main unit (although nothing around the house changed during the time when the problem started), or in the furnace/AC itself... Any info would be very helpful! (i don't have much money, so calling a technician is a last resort)
